I like the thought of Jano at PG with his shooting ability.  Id almost say he could step in next year and be an upgrade to what we have currently but hard to say without watching him actually play.

A couple of thoughts. 

First, that was a great college basketball game. 

Great effort by both teams.

Both teams wanted to win and left it all on the court. 

- We win that game with Berke, no doubt

- Maryland got every lucky bounce and loose ball imaginable

- Morgan getting his fourth foul was critical. Lots of soft calls tonight against the Huskers. 

- Nebraska's on-ball defense wasn't good enough again

- We had a lot of good looks just couldn't hit our shots, and the Terps hit every tough shot

- Give credit to the Terps, they had every answer

- Maryland is sweet 16 caliber and probably the most athletic team in the Big Ten.

Despite all that we were in the game until the end.   Our effort was good under the circumstances and we did some things (i.e FT shooting) very well to stay in the game.     (FWIW hard to believe we did not win a game where Meah and Morgan were a combined 6-6 from the line - never thought I would see that :)

 

 

This right here is why I feel this league does so poorly in the Dance.  We were allowed to play the why they have been playing for the last 2 1/2 months.  I know you change your game to fit the calls, but is tough when you have played one way almost all year.  I also want to know when it was okay to grab a guy around the waist to not let them go the way they want to?

I’d expect us to get an upgrade at PG through the Portal, that & Scoring from our Wing Players will be our most glaring needs. 

Bridge veteran portal PG that is a scorer next year with Nick as the backup then it will be the Nick J show 

Our team defense is a strength, our individual defense can at times be a liability.  

I think we win with Berke and a healthy team as well.  Defense is about taking up space and offense is about creating space.  With Berke on the perimeter, layups for Gary and others become easier as the help defense isn't there to volleyball spike it like they did last night.

I am worried about how quickly we can get healthy as the tougher of the two road games is first and its up quick.

One quality Jano does not appear to possess is quickness.  So he likely fits into a PG  role similar to Rollie and Sam G.   

Hey guys just curious - if you had a 7'1" guy with a 20 foot wingspan who can jump out of the gym and was first team all defense in the pac whatever it's called - would you have him flying all over the place guarding ball screens, being on the perimeter, and bringing other dudes in the post to double with him?

Interesting question.   Further assumptions; I have built a contending team, that team has been a historical bottom feeder.  That team has not yet, reached the level of play that consistently translates into a top tier program.  

However, that said, your building a foundation of expectations.  Tied with that are specific systems for your offense, defense and off-court behavior. 

Now, when you recruit do you recruit for that system, or do you make systematic changes to conform to the recruit/players?  

Now back to your question, with my answer.  I said this earlier in the season.  It doesn't appear to me that the staff really knows how to leverage Meah.  So instead of changing the system, the coaches are requiring Meah to conform to the system.

I have just seen him play live in the red white scrimmage - but from that I certainly did not see a player I would expect to see at point guard.   Not quick at all - and did not see much in the way of ball handling or court vision.   He is a shooter not a ball handler from what little I have seen and heard anyway.

Assume this is a reference to Meah - I have seen no evidence that he can do anything close to "jump out of the gym" - but that is probably beside your point.  I do get what you are saying about how we use him and you point is well taken.   But, at the same time if you are going to have a team defensive system can it be completely different with Morgan or Berke at that spot than it is with Meah?   If you do play defense differently with different players on the floor does that inhibit your ability to defend as a "unit" over time? 

On a somewhat related note what I was wondering last night is whether our frequent switching and hard hedging for screens is failing to take advantage of what defenses are apparently now allowed to do.   When Brice or Connor are trying to run around screens most defenders just grab and hold them so they can't get away - Maryland was doing that very much last night - one guy just grabbed Connor around the waist with both hands when he was trying to go around a screen.   As long as the Big 10 refs let you grab off ball cutters you are trying to follow in pure man to man - why bother with all the switching?

Basically, we had an old push lawn mower that got the job done but it took you 3 hours to mow the lawn and made you work hard. We found an old riding lawn mower sitting on the curb and bought it to reduce our mowing time and effort. The only problem is it doesn't cut very sharp, can't get in tight spots and needs to be refueled 3 times during a mowing session. So it ends up being 3+ hours by the time you're done.

I also feel after playing the 4 Pac teams that joined us that Meah was perfect for that league. I see the Pac as a more finesse league.  He is more of finesse player.  He isn't a big bruiser as it has been proven how he has been tossed around some this year.  I have liked what he has given us this year and actually wished he had played a bit more, but I am just some guy who watches the game from afar.

Rhymes im not sure what to expect from, but I think frager jumps Griffiths in the rotation and Nick janowski is an immediate impact guy from the jump. Portal will be interesting because they should have two starting spots locked up next year at the 4/5. 

Griffiths will most likely not be jumped next year, as I don’t think he will be with the Huskers next year. He’s buried right now as the 11th man.

I am curious if anyone has some anecdotes on how Janowski has been performing in practice.  I agree he is not very quick, and his ball-handling skills are not elite.  But based on the high school video I watched he seemed to be a straight up hooper.  He is also a strong, solid dude.  I was just perusing the roster on Huskers.com and they list Janowski at 6'4" and 208 lbs--as a freshman.  Just as a comparison, Cale (who is a brick house) is listed at 6'4" and 195 lbs.  And barrel-chest Worster (a 5th year senior) is listed at 6'5" and 210 lbs.  And lest there be any confusion, anyone who has seen Nick warming up at games can quickly see there is not an ounce of fat on him.  It is all lean muscle. 

Fred's point guards have rarely been traditional point guards.  If someone like Sam G could play PG in the B1G, then maybe Jano could too.  If not, he should still be able to find a role at the SG assuming he can keep up on defense.  Holding out hope he can be a good one, but am a bit concerned that we have not heard anything through the grapevine about his performance in practice so far this year.   With that said, I haven't heard anything about Frager either, so maybe it is just more under seal this year, I don't know. 

He comes down and shoots on the north basket if the other team is not out there, very early like 45 min before games. Shoots for a good 15 minutes.

Dude has KT range, hits about every shot he takes, and it is bottom of net no rim.  Left handed, looks like a outside LB.  

He does dribble around when taking the shot and does go between the legs behind the back quick dribbles.

Also like that he doesn't just work on catch and shoot, but off the dribble, pump fake, step back.  We know a lot of guys who are pretty good catch and shoot, but the way the Big 10 is allowed to defend, it is hard for those type of guys to get open to get good clean looks.

So I don't really know how this translates to live action but he looks really good before games.

I've mentioned before how high and excited I am on janowski because I feel like he has that "IT" factor. I really think the redshirt year will be helpful for him. I think he'll start or be a one of 2 primary 2s next year with a vet PG next to him, and Nick will provide relief when that PG goes to the bench.

Some posters have hinted they've been hearing really good things about him lately. If he plays PG next year, there is no reason that he can't be as effective as Rollie Worster is in his 5th year of college basketball. Worster is a better athlete, but Janowski is already the same weight and is a light years better shooter than Worster. And I really don't have any concerns about his athleticism because I think his effort and attitude will make up for it. I'm expecting a player with Sam Hoiberg's level of intensity and effort but with size and elite shooting.

One reason he would not be as effective as Rollie at the point is that he wasn't a PG in HS. If we're back to running the offense out of the post it might be fine.
