uneblinstu's postgame chatter: vol 13; ed 1 - McNeese St.

Welcome to Season 13 of the Postgame Chatter!

There's a lot to be excited about coming into this year! It's going to be a strange season to be sure, but I'm glad we're going to be able to watch them play this year!

    First Half:

    • Oh, so that's the Lat Mayen shooting prowess we heard all about...
    • Lots of getting to the rim, but they missed some there rim early again.
    • We saw Banton's length at PG on display early. That wasn't even that great of a pass to McGowens, who made a crazy athletic play on the dunk, Banton had the ball on his hip and was still able to casually reach over his defender, who was in terrible position.
    • I like Stevenson as a rebounder. Quick hands on the perimeter defense, too!
    • It's too bad there won't be fans in the stands this year. I think this team would get the building rocking.
    • Thor can still shoot, too.
    • Trey McGowens is going to be fun to watch, too!
    • I like Teddy's energy!
    • Free throws, at least in the first half, still not great...
    • McNeese St. coaches not big on the mask usage.
    • NU causing all sorts of issues for McNeese. They're bigger, stronger, faster. Creating lots of turnovers, rebounding well, getting points in transition. Fun first half of the season.

    Halftime:

    Second Half:

    • Loved the set out of the break! Just missed a touch on the pass.
    • Liked the defensive energy, even though the execution on the offensive end was a little sloppy. I'll be interested to see how it looks against bigger opponents, but I like the front court physicality.
    • I liked how they pushed right out of halftime.
    • Mayen cooled a bit after the hot start. He had a drive right after the first media time out where he tried dishing off to Stevenson. Thought he should have gone up for the lay in. I think he had a pretty open look at it. He had a chance to do just that a couple possessions later and finished it.
    • When Banton gets going, he's gonna be tough to slow down. I think he got from half court to the lane in three steps once when he got to full speed.
    • Yvan's stroke looks a little better.
    • Allen's jumper looks a little funky, but hey, if it goes in...
    • Just an 8 player rotation before they emptied the bench with about 8 minutes to go.
    • 6 players in double figures. Not too shabby.
    • Banton's length on the perimeter might put him among B1G leaders in blocked shots.
    • Free throws much better in the 2nd half.

I have a hunch we're going to like watching this team this year...

I'll probably not be able to post these for tomorrow's game and probably Saturday as well, so don't wait for me if nothing gets posted right away.

Those kids were even more athletic than I thought they would be and I'll say this for everything I've heard about the football team and Duvals training the basketball team looks like they could show up to the gridiron and kick some ass.

Dont have alot of negatives thought the FT shooting and perimeter defense need to get better those are things that can and will get you beat in conference play.

Still think we'll get beat up in the paint a little bit.

Not sure who our main scorer is IE if we need someone to come out and give us 20 any given game BUT we do have alot of guys who can put the ball in the bucket if that makes sense.

Still think this is a .500 team wouldnt surprise me if they finished even better which is 1 hell of a improvement from last year and this team will not be easy to beat.

Very fun game to watch and this will be a very fun team to watch. Everything I could ask for and more.

Curious to see Teddy's progress.  Felt like a little Petteway in him and trying to force things to get his game going which he doesnt need to do.  Much easier for him last year, and wanting to see how he does against tougher competition.  We'll see how he handles that....just my $.02

I don't think we really need to speculate about how Teddy would do against tougher competition. Just go to YouTube and watch him against teams like Oklahoma and KSU from his true freshman season two years ago. He's already faced numerous top-10 Division I programs and put up double digits in the scoring column. He'll be fine.

1-NU scored 102 points and, by my count, missed at least 23 shots from within 5 feet. Also missed a few more FTs than I would expect they will going forward. I know McNeese was a disaster defensively, but NU easily could've been around 115-120 points. That's crazy.

yeah, I agree. although for some stretches of the second half, mcneese played some really solid lockdown defense, believe it or not. adversity helps growth, and tomorrow with nevada gives us (according to Kenpom) an even matchup challenge.

I recall last season when I predicted we’d score @ least 100 points on 7 occasions (little did I know we’d win SEVEN games) but this squad might stir the echos of some classic Nee/Tubbs shootouts...

It was Tubbs his first year at OU that said they were going to run and shoot and he hoped by year 2 they could run and make a few. That hopefully will describe Fred’s year 2 as well.

I was fairly impressed with this team.  The athleticism on defense will give teams fits.  Free throw shooting seems improved.   3 point shooting was better.  I do have worries down the road. Teams are not going to let us run.  How do we handle that?  Can we find a half court offense?

Not much to complain about.   47 point season opening wins are much better than 19 point losses.

I think the first five minutes of the game was a good example of what we’ll do in the half court. It was pretty efficient yesterday.
