I've selected 10 Power Five/major conference coaching resumes. Without the names of the teams or the coaches -- you can try to figure them out if you like -- which ones (from none of them to all of them) would be acceptable to you at Nebraska, and why?

And no - none of the below profiles are Miles, Doc, Nee or Collier.

I'm just curious about expectations.

Profile 1

7 NCAA Tournaments - 6-7 record

3 Conference Tournament titles - 2 regular season titles

Profile 9

My expectation is not provided in your profiles Sam.  I am all about building a program, not just a team.  I believe once the program is built, then even greater expectations are available.  So in short, my expectation would look more like this (and this factors in the last two years:

Profile Huskercwg

6 seasons

138-62

5 NCAA Tournaments - 5-6 record

1 Conference Tournament title; 1 regular season titles

After six years, the number of NCAA tournament wins should grow and a few additional conference tournament and regular season titles should materialize

What CWG presented looks an awful lot like Profile 6, except the Big Dance expectation (3 NCAA's instead of CWG's 5). I'd say that Profile 6 looks pretty good as is...

Sam, the longer the tenure, the more I'd have to say "it depends."  Because if he's been there 9 seasons with 2 NCAAs several years apart sandwiched in between the 4 NIT berths like Herb Sendek (example #1), then I might not disagree with firing him.  He'd gone a long time at ASU without a bid, got one last year, but then followed it up with more mediocrity and no particular reason to believe he'll be hanging any banners in his arena any year soon.  So, that one?  Yeah, I'm probably down with axing him.

Herb Sendek (example #1),

I think #1 is Adam Kennedy.

FWIW I don't think this is meant to be a gotcha trap thread if anyone is wondering....like you don't end up with a coach from a team often vilified on this site.

Having said the above, my votes were based on the following rubric:

  • Make the NCAA tourney at or close to half the time.
  • Don't go 0-fer in the dance.  Win at least once in every 3 trips.
  • Qualify for post season play 60% of the time.
  • If your team qualifies for the dance close to but not quite half the time, or hasn't reached post-season at least 3 out of every 5 years, have you mitigated things by either:

a.  Winning conference titles; or

b.  Winning more NCAA tourney games?

Ooops, my bad.  I knew Sendek was just fired after 9 seasons and had 2 NCAA tourney appearances and, I thought, 4 NITs.  But I figured I must have been off on the number of NITs.  Maybe I was.  But it's close to Sendek.  Just no cigar.

I think we're referring to Andy Kennedy & not the baseball second-baseman Adam... ;)

I guess I'm not certain what is the point of this exercise?

I'm curious which coaching profiles fans see as acceptable.

It's not at all a trap. It's a blind resume so as to remove the "oh, well, that's a good coach" factor that comes with names.

Okay.

I am not trying to be difficult.  My expectation is that we are now set up to build a consistant and top flight basketball program.  We should aspire to be in the NCAA tournament each year.  We should aspire to compete in the upper level of the Big Ten each year.  We should start winning recruiting wars more often than losing them.  We should never be happy about the NIT and certainly we should never have to worry about making the post season.

I have been patient for a lot (I repeat a lot) of years.  Supposedly it is difficult to recruit here.  That has to end.  We have the fan base, we have the arena, we have the practice palace, we have the weight and nutrition programs, we have the academic support, we have the money, we have the conference tie, we have the coach...I am not going to imply that we had "the best" players under Danny, but man, look at the rosters back then, we can should get top tier talent here, and with next years group, it appears we may be making progress.

So again, I do have higher expectations...sorry, but I do.

I like this coach's profile...Most impressive is that he must have influence since they kept his team in the tournament one year until they could lose 2 games!  :D

I voted for three of them, but #5 through #8 and #2 were all that I liked. Similar to Norm's criteria, I looked for getting to the tournament around half the time and actually winning some games. And in a couple instances I valued winning the conference tournament higher than I did the regular season title because it says to me they have their squad tournament ready and playing well at the end of the year. Not sure who I'd say is my favorite out of that group.

#3 and #4 really surprised me, I always had then idea in my head that Colorado and Oklahoma State faired well in the tourney a few times. Really surprised me that they only have two tourney wins between the two. Especially with Okie State's talent they've had.

I was also surprised to see #7 Leonard Hamilton has only been to the tourney 4/13 of his seasons. In my head I've always chalked him up as being one of the bests.... When your perceptions see the numbers, eh?

Interesting post, Sam!

Definitely no need to apologize for that post. Although I'd say if after year 6, if Tim Miles has done exactly what Tony Bennett has done at Virginia, we would have named the state after him and our mile markers would be called "Miles Markers," and have a goofy picture of him on there.

2009–10 Virginia 15–16 5–11

2010–11 Virginia 16–15 7–9

2011–12 Virginia 22–10 9–7 NCAA Second Round

2012–13 Virginia 23–12 11–7 NIT Quarterfinals

2013–14 Virginia 30–7 16–2 NCAA Sweet Sixteen

2014–15 Virginia 30–4 16-2 NCAA 3rd Round

That's skme amazingly consistent growth and development as a program. Disappointing finish to this year for them, but nonetheless.

1, 4, 8, 9 and 10 have all been fired. Connie as we all know resigned for reasons unrelated to the W-L ledger.

Miles' record is most like Mark Fox, the profile that received the least amount of votes.

Fox, just fired, finished 163-133, with 2 NCAA (0-2) and 3 NITs in 9 seasons.

When I originally posted it, I did so really as a kind of test on fan expectations - what fans say their expectations are and what they actually are based on their actions. (Going to games, message board postings, tweets, letters to editors, etc.)

At this point, give me every profile except #9 so that when we are attempting to build a program up from the ground, we don't have to have the "never won an NCAA tournament game" monkey on our back. Seriously, why did Northwestern have to win and make us the only power five conference team without a tourney win :(? But yeah, I agree with almost everyone else's sentiment that you want to see more from your program once they start to establish themselves and build consistency.
