Petteway and shields will have just graduated by the time he's eligible to play, 2016-17 season

He'd be eligible to play next spring semester but have two more years after that.

He's a kid from Kansas, so he may go there or KSU or Wichita, but it there's already a relationship there, there might be an opening. Top 30 kid out of HS two years ago. Had some big time offers then, obviously. Be curious to see where he ends up.

obviously you take him if we wants to come here, but we are in desperate need of an inside presence.

HS lists him as 6'6" 215. Duke lists him at 6'8" 230.  It'd be like having another Ed Morrow sized player.

I'd take him over most 6'11" guys that would be available to us.

So far I've seen Kansas, Mizzou, Wisconsin and us as having expressed interest. This is going to be a battle to get this kid. Having some pre-existing relationship with Shavon helps. Gotta think he knows some people at KU and Mizzou too.

He wants to go to the NCAA tourney. Thus, Mizzou would be a huge shock.

I admittedly don't track such things, so probably a dumb question, but do a lot of schools have a scholarship open right now? Then again, some teams will have one open at semester with their own transfers - about how many players on average transfer at semester from P5 schools?

And will a mid-semester transfer take "official" visits again, that sort of thing? I would assume it has to happen on his own dime if he would.

Just curious what the rules are. Can't remember who the last mid-semester transfer was that we had, I remember the big kid from USC who never actually played in a game from a few years ago, but can't remember that last "successful" one we had. I'm probably forgetting an obvious one.

Compared to who?  If he eliminates Mizzou because he wants a program that historically goes to the NCAA, then we don't have a prayer.

I probably should have added academic reputation as well. Mizzou is under a first year coach and it's a bit of a mess.

I think we're a bit of a longshot but like our chances a lot more than Mizzou.

We are relatively close to his hometown.  We have the need at his position, and therefore a strong likelihood of playing time, which would obviously be of interest to someone transferring away from a place that didn't have much playing time available.  We have an open spot right now.  And we have a kind of connection in that he and Shavon played on the same AAU team.  Plus, you would have to consider us to be strong contenders to return to the dance the year he would become eligible here.  And, with his contribution, would be likely to remain NCAA contenders for the remainder of his eligibility.

From a logical perspective, coming here makes sense and would certainly offer some advantages to him.

Coming here makes sense, but it seems like dream.. We need to have realistic expectations now as I thought aw3 was that pipe dream. Don't put it past miles and hunter on this one. We've had success with transfers here and if he makes a trip here... Anything can happen

This.

I have faith that big things will happen. I believed AW-III would end up 'N'; wish it worked out in our favor w/ Semi... who knows how it goes, only Semi knows what he wants.

NU could be as good of a landing spot as it gets if wants to play in a big-time league near his home state w/ one of his buddies (unless KU or Mizzou also have friends on their roster). Sounds too good to be true, doesn't it?

I would imagine Wisconsin or Marquette (if they have need for him) will be pretty high on the list, maybe 1 and 1a.  Anyone else not considered a blue blood or located in the state of Kansas should be considered a long shot at best.

Sure, there's the connection with Shavon, but I'm not so sure that will hold much, if any, water with him.

Would we take him?  In a friggin' heartbeat.  Could we use him?  No doubt about it.  Do we actually have a shot at him?  I'd say "outlook no so good".

49r, why do you think he'd want to go to a school with a logjam of talent?  If he wanted to hold a spot on a team with major, championship-level aspirations (and not see the floor much), he could stay at Duke.

He's not, though.

He's leaving to find a place where he stands a good chance of getting major minutes, and he'd like it to be a team that can reach the dance.

That's us.

It's not like our cupboard is exactly bare, Norm.  And it is about to be much less so next year.

But I guess to the larger point, it seems that perhaps educational prestige is definitely a factor for this kid, he is a pretty sharp kid as I understand and has aspirations beyond hoops.  And while I think UNL is a fine school, a degree from there doesn't have the "wow" factor that one from Wisco or Marquette does.  That's kind of where I'm coming from on this.

Well, then, Missouri is definitely out.

...and the reason I include Marquette is because apparently Wojo was the lead recruiter on him at Duke.
