Coaching staff deserves this loss. Genius move having Webster I'm the game at the end! Pure genius!

Well lets see Webster TO didn't beat the Huskers. Looks like Pettaway's did

Right here, Why not have him in there.

Posted

Webster started it with the first TO and it crumbled from there.

Why do you keep ripping on Tai?  Yes, he is not playing very well offensively.  For the most part, he's played good defense.  He is trying to adjust to a new position.  He is not the only player on the team that has sucked.  The whole team has had brain farts.  He only played 17 minutes.  He scored 7 points and 2 rebounds.  He was NOT the reason we lost.

Hey Bugeaters1 read this....where did I say anything about giving up on this team?

You know your pissing and moaning through the baseball season got old. and it is getting old here just as fast.

lets see you said it was a brilliant move by the coaches to have Webster in the game. to me you are implying that Webster lost the game.

You should see him over on the spring sports forum. He pissed and moaned all season about how bad of a coach Erstad is and how bad the team was.

Bugeaters1 overexaggeration much! Let me guess we lost to Incarante Word because the gym was too cold in the gym right? I stick by what I said. And I didn't say anything you insinuated.

Shall we go back and look at the posts from last spring

You're right GATA, I'm an idiot. Losing to the team that everyone is trying to turn into this great low-major team because they won at Pre-Season #8 Ivy League school Princeton. Other than that, D2 wins.

They lost to the mighty UTEP by 18.

We were picked in the Top 25 and lost ONE game at home last year with a less experienced team. We've now lost TWO in a row - one against a mediocre team, one against a god awful transition team that isn't even in a true conference for another year (the Southland).

But you're right, teams who lose at home to Incarnate Word make the Tournament all the time. No big deal. Especially after Creighton. And especially with Cincinatti coming in next. We've got them right where we want them and people across the country are NOT chuckling at us right now. This one WON'T kill our RPI (even though ICW finishes in the 250's), nor will the loss to a Creighton team that finishes in the 80's. And this is the calm before the storm. How are we going to handle Cincy, Hawaii on their home court or the Big 10 slate?

If I'm an idiot for being a realist and not accepting this crap, then I guess I'm an idiot.

If you think this game is no big deal, you're way off base. Again, you think this will help recruiting, too, especially if it's the thing that guarantees us NIT versus NCAA, assuming we get things back on track?

Damn, it WAS cold in the gym last night!  What was up with that?  All the wives in the section kept their winter coats on and were less than pleased.

Hey, Dave, this might be a shock to hear, but we're not as good as we were last year.

Some of the off-season improvements some people told us about were oversold.  And, if you were paying attention, posters like HB had been saying for awhile that while Gallegos might not have been on fire as a shooter, he was still tough on the defensive end, and we'd miss him more than people might realize.

Not to mention the unexpected loss of Leslee Smith who was second on the team in both steals and rebounding a year ago.

Does it suck to lose to Incarnate Word?  Sure.  Did it suck to lose to Creighton?  Sure.

But, instead of hitting the panic button, I've adjusted my expectations instead.  It's not realistic to expect us to be a 5 seed in the tournament this year.  It's probably not realistic to think that we are any better than a potential bubble team.

Can I do anything about the fact that we're not looking like a 5 seed?  Absolutely not.  Can't do a thing.

Is it going to help anything for me to get all hysterical about a bad loss?  Not in any way I can think of.

Does our 5-3 record justify turning on the coaching staff and launching a "fireTimMiles" website?

Only if you're a panicky, hysterical little bitch of a Husker basketball fan.

But that's not me.  So, I'll just temper my expectations and my comments a bit and wait to see what happens.

Even with adjusted expectations of being a bubble NCAA Tournament team (which we aren't right now), it's still not OK to lose at home to Incarnate Word.

But you're right, no one should be turning on Miles right now or even suggesting he should be on the hot seat, although I'm not sure anyone is seriously saying such things. Perhaps I missed those posts or I just ignored them.

Yep...have to agree Normy.  I have been biting my bottom lip and stayed away for the past week just so I do not get involved with the doom and gloom debate.  I have simply adjusted my expectations just a tad.  I was hoping that this year would be as good or better than last year.  That ain't looking like it will happen.  Now I am hoping to see a team that will show heart and character; fight like hell to win games and look for signs of improvement.  We are missing a couple of absolute necessary pieces in order to be a top flight team.  Take a look at the bigs at Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville, Florida and so forth.  I am not bashing on Jake or Walt, but simply compare and contrast...and don't stop at those schools, look around...We will continue to grow, but we should have seen this coming, especially with the absence of Leslee and now the injury to Moses....goodness.

I don't think anyone should have seen this coming. Forget the loss to Rhode Island. Forget the loss to Creighton. We should not be losing at home to Incarnate Word. We should not be down 16 in the first half to UNO. We should not struggle in exhibition games. This has been the theme for the entire season, and I'm not sure how in the world anyone could have seen us struggling this badly.

There is a difference between expecting the things you mention, and basing one's feelings on the expectations of being a top 25 or Sweet 16 team.   I doubt anyone is saying we should have expected to struggle at home against UNO, and lose to IW (hell, when I saw that on the schedule, I said "Why are we scheduling an exhibition game in December?"), but perhaps that expectations were generally a bit inflated.

Agreed, HB. Expectations must be tempered. That's obvious to all of us now.

Hopefully Leslee comes back to give us some good minutes so we don't finish in the bottom 4 of the B1G.

Tai needs to find his confidence and put the ball in the hoop or maybe a short-term coach imposed exile to the bench would have the same effect it had on Rivers last year.

Pitchford or someone else needs to start hitting from the outside on a consistent basis.

Petteway needs to be FORCED to improve his shot selection.

The whole team needs to rebound better.

We cannot ask our posts to defend 1-on-1 right now because we don't have anyone that can do it especially with Moses' hand right now.

Incarnate Word should have been a great lesson learned from a close victory that we have some serious issues to address. Fouling a jump shooter should be a cardinal sin for basketball players and the fact that we fouled two three point attempts in a row at the end of the game - unexcusable in the basketball world. Once we inbounded it to Shields, why would he quickly give it to Tai? He didn't want it, hence the turnover. Hold the ball and make free throws. We worked very, very hard down the stretch to lose this game and deserved to lose based upon our end game play. I believe the sky fell in after the UMass game last year but we managed to right the ship if I can mix my metaphors. Just like at that time last season, we are now at a major turning point for this year. We shouldn't be in crisis mode yet, but you can get there from here. We still have the potential to be a much worse or a much better team than we were last year. I'm anxious to see how things play out from here.

Posted

I have differ on us fouling the shooter on the last two three point shots.

The kid fell without any contact and was awarded free throws. I guess we could have backed away but then he makes them and we look bad too. I know we should not have been in that situation, nor should the player be rewarded for doing the wrong thing.

Basically I see it as cheating and the officals rewarded him for it. And I hate the old saying, it ain't cheating unless they call, because that crew hadn't called any thing correct all night.

I didn't like it when McCrey did it for us against Kansas either.
