hhcmatt Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 Not much for guesses here, except that it seems we are in some sort of holding pattern with both Ayegba and Deng. Why? And toward what end? The only people who know are, apparently, not talking. I'd be shocked if we're in the position to give either recruit a conditional offer of sorts. I'm not usually a sky is falling type guy, but this class could hurt. Signing period starts tomorrow, correct? I think just like we're a safety school for Ristic, we're potentially a safety school for other high level guys out there. Myles Turner is going to drop someone out of a VC. Some of this stuff shakes out but our track record indicates we probably won't fill at least one scholarship for a little bit if at all. We'll see. Quote

Transfer can sign papers at any time and even if its a juco or high school player they can sign financial aid agreements after the signing period and still get a scholarship. Quote
a0t0w0 Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 "This class could hurt"? Seriously?! Sheesh. Consider it this way: Tim Miles and Co. appear to have both Ayegba and Deng in the fold, if and when the coaches are ready to pull the trigger on them. Meanwhile, the coaches are swinging for the fence behind the scenes, under the radar, and without consulting us internet geniuses. Any class could hurt short term. I wasn't going to be upset at all with just Smith and Hammond, but with other departures it leaves even bigger gaps (Hawkins more so than Vooch). I have no doubt they're doing things behind the scenes. I meant it could hurt in terms of signing out of desperation. My knowledge of recruiting is next to zero, so don't get offended by that post. I personally feel that the confidence level of some posters in getting Deng or Ayegba may be a little high. Deng has other solid offers. Even with his ankle injury I'm sure plenty of schools would be interested. Last I saw Baylor was the favorite on him. Ayegba didn't put up massive numbers, but being immediately available should be attractive to plenty of other schools. As others have said, no verbal after his visit is interesting. I'll kindly bow out of recruiting conversation now. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 The key deal on Ayegba is that he's an immediately-eligible graduate transfer that we only have to commit a year to and then his scholarship is available to be re-offered to a 2015 prospect in the fall that will likely be better than any 2014 4-year player available to us now. Plus, he's in a position of need, but it's yet to be seen how much he can add to the rotation. Worth the risk, but he might be nothing better than a place holder for that 2015 recruit. Still, I'd rather take a chance on a guy like Ayegba than give a scholarship for a year to Trevor Menke by default. (No offense, Trevor, but we need a scholarship-quality big for at least a year with one of our open spots.) NeHoops 1 Quote

That's why I said I don't think we're in the position to be giving out conditional offers (A different post alluded to that). I WANT Ayegba and Deng. I didn't mean it would hurt if we signed them, I meant it could hurt if we whiffed on them and went on to plan X. If Ayegba + Deng= One Leslee Smith I'd take it. Quote
The Coach Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 We should go after Idrissa Diallo, he signed with Cal but is re-opening his recruiting with the coaching change. Quote

I think Ayegba is as good or has the potential to be better than Smith. This was his first season back from knee surgery. I think Ayegba can easily provide the same type of minutes and production. Deng, when healthy, is more of a Shavon Shields from watching his videos. Quote
TheKamdyMan Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 We should go after Idrissa Diallo, he signed with Cal but is re-opening his recruiting with the coaching change. I saw online the schools his coach listed as interested parties. Only one of the ones he listed is outside the pac 12 footprint in Virginia Tech, otherwise it was Cal, USC, UNLV, Oregon State, Colorado. Quote
Minnesota_Husker Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 Not always a bad idea to keep one scholarship open in case someone decides to transfer in mid-summer time frame.... My educated guesses are Moses, Deng and a Mid-may transfer who sits out a year. I think Deng plays this year. Quote
tjp21 Posted April 16, 2014 Report Posted April 16, 2014 I live down in OK and heard tonight that Sooner Soph PG Je'lon Hornbeak is transferring. The news just broke today. He started as a Fr and came off the bench this year as a Soph. No reason to think he'd be looking at NU but just thought I'd mention the name. I want to say he was a 4 Star recruit from down in Texas so if I had to guess I'd think he ends up somewhere down there. hhcmatt 1 Quote

OU fans seem to think he'll be transferring to a smaller school for more PT but overall would rather have seen him stay. Quote
Marv Posted April 16, 2014 Report Posted April 16, 2014 Does anyone remember watching Je'lon Hornbreak play this past year? I realize we have no connection to him and would likely never land him, just throwing the question out there. Also, would he be an upgrade to Nebraska's roster? Quote
tjp21 Posted April 16, 2014 Report Posted April 16, 2014 Like I said in an earlier post, I live down here so I've seen him play. He'd be an upgrade over what we had at the PG spot last year, but he'd have to sit out a year and by then who knows what we're looking at. Still has his RS available so he has two years left to play He came in as a top 100 recruit (102 by Rivals) out of the Dallas area. Started almost every game as a Fr. averaged 5/2/2 over the course of his two years at OU. Had a foot injury early in the season last year that sort of set him back but seemed to get his groove back late in the year. This year, he was a key contributor off the bench, playing 20 mins/game. Was one of their better defenders (not sure what that means though, they didn't play much D). Isn't a great outside shooter, but more of a scoring threat than Tai or Benny was for us last year. From what I've heard/read in the last two days he hasn't decided where he's going and was going to go through the "recruiting" process again. Not sure what that means, other than he's probably looking for a starting job somewhere. Wouldn't be suprised to see him land somewhere in TX. I've seen SFA, Houston, and SMU mentioned but have a feeling all those were guesses at best. Everything I'm hearing is that they didn't want to lose him. The guy averaged over 20 mins a game as a Fr/So for two teams that made the tourney, so he's far from a scrub. Again, no reason at all to think he'd even be considering us. Just another quality player out there who's available and plays a position of need. I'll be listening to the local sportstalk radio today and pass along anything else I hear on him. hhcmatt 1 Quote
Norm Peterson Posted April 16, 2014 Report Posted April 16, 2014 Tai Webster as a soph will be an upgrade over what we had at the PG spot last year, too. Like I said in an earlier post, I live down here so I've seen him play. He'd be an upgrade over what we had at the PG spot last year, Quote

Like I said in an earlier post, I live down here so I've seen him play. He'd be an upgrade over what we had at the PG spot last year, Yep, that's why I included the "by then who knows what we're looking at" ending to that sentence. I expect Tai to be more polished next year, and in two years I'd hope both he and Smith are playing at high level. I honestly don't even know if I'd want us to go after this guy. He's a combo guard. As a Fr I think he played a lot of SG. That could be part of why he's leaving. He may not want to play the point. I was just passing along the info since it just broke yesterday. Quote
Swan88 Posted April 18, 2014 Report Posted April 18, 2014 How about this theory on the Ayegba and Deng commitment delays? The Huskers are awaiting confirmation of the graduation status for each before Nebrasketball makes a commitment to or receives a commitment from them. Quote

throwback Posted April 19, 2014 Author Report Posted April 19, 2014 And there certainly isn't any hurry on the transfers - that situation is very fluid as more players announce plans to transfer and it's not a fast process, as teams have to be careful with how contact is initially made and so forth. One thing that seems to be popping up again and again with transfers is guys wanting to move closer to home, which obviously means we run into the same problem we run into with signing HS players - there aren't a lot of high level D1 prospects in the immediate area, which means some transfers are going to remove us from the list immediately unfortunately. Which is why I'm starting to think Dwight Smith is at least 50/50 to end up at NU. I think NU may be after bigger "fish" for now, but it wouldn't surprise me to see him end up accepting one the last 3 scholarships. If he does, that says Coach Miles believes he can be a really good "glue" guy for next year's team. Taking another senior graduate transfer with Ayegba would give us 2 additional scholarships for 2015, which has been the key recruiting year all along, just because a new coach usually nededs a few years to connect with HS players early enough in their HS careers to truly have a shot with them, so it wouldn't be all bad to have 4 scholarships for the 2015 class. Coach Miles obviously knows much more about Dwight Smith than he would about any other transfer, so if he believes DS could be a contributor to next season's talented team - both on the court and off in terms of chemistry - I'd fully understand that move.
