One of the things that bugs me about college basketball is that there is no transparency or accountability for the officials.  They can be horrible but no one in the game can ever call them out.  Which means you're stuck with bad officials and there's no apparent incentive for an official to bring his "A" game when he refs.

Can't think of his name but the guy who had to leave the game today has sucked forever.  How he still has a job officiating games at this level is a mystery.

I'm OK with rules that keep order.  A coach shouldn't be publicly bad-mouthing an official after a game.  And the officials need to maintain control during a game.  But NOBODY wants to watch a foul fest and there were 40 freethrows shot in the 2nd half of this game.

Officials should be evaluated anonymously by the coaches.  And, every game, each coach should be able to give each official a rating from 0-10.  And every 10 games an official works, those ratings should be made public.  I say every 10 games so that an official can't try to deduce which coach might have given him a bad ranking.

But they needed to be rated and the results of those ratings need to be published.  And if an official is consistently at the bottom of the coaches' ratings, they need to be gotten rid of.

Maybe something non-public like this exists.  I don't know.  But it needs to be public.  There needs to be transparency and there most certainly needs to be accountability.  And from what I can tell, right now there is none.

Jim Burr is the guy who had to leave the game. He's like 120 years old and he is Aaron Craft's great great grandfather.

Refs have been bad all year and I have no idea what anyone can do about it. We have the new hand-check rules but those rules don't apply to everyone equally.

Jim Burr. Aaron's little brother.

Kudos to you, sir.

I think it was absolute trash today. And before anyone tells me "we shouldn't have blown an 18 point lead" and "officials aren't the reason we lost today", I know, and I disagree. Bigtime. The announcers eluded to the discrepancy or unfairness a couple times, being as subtle as possible, but were mostly stuck talking about how much Ohio State practices the press and face guarding. It all changed with OSUs press. That's when it got ugly. Yes, we were somewhat flawed in our approach I'm breaking the press for awhile. That's something we can control. But we can't control the amount of grabbing, pulling, pushing, reaching, and humping that the officials allow. This is when the calls became very one-sided. It was difficult for us to draw a foul at all while when OSU was on offense, Craft and company cashed in on a number of the classic duck your head and whistle plays. Most of these were totally undeserved. Yet, with the new rules that seem to come and go, who knows.

We settled for too many jump shots and didn't make the officials make enough calls by driving to the basket.  I thought that Ross clearly traveled on his "and one" late in the game.  What can you do?  It's over and time to prepare for our NCAA game.

Great post, Norm.

The refs were brutal in this game, and most of the Big 10 season as well. Don't get me wrong, we benefited from a lot of calls as well and officiating is not why we lost. BUT, MY LORD...how do you have these "new rules" and go way over the top with them and call fouls on guys for playing good defense and not simply getting out of the way of a player driving...but then let Crafty reach and grab and shove the whole time...

I'm not going to whine about the officiating any more.  I'm done.

We need to play better.  That's all.

True dat. Nebraska forgot to play "winning" basketball after getting that big lead. It still sucks that it had to be like that out there on the court w/ the clutching, the grabbing, the holding.  Hell, Benny Parker gets run up under by not other than Aaron Craft in the 1st half, and nothing. It's completely ridiculous that Matta got his but Miles didn't seem to early on! But, even w/ all that, NU didn't play well enough to hang on vs. the tougher Bucks today.

we had an 18 point lead. had plenty of calls go our way (2 pitchford charges).

No doubt, it's the obvious clutches, grabs & holds that guys like Craft & Scott were able to do w/ nary a foul on 'em the entire contest... as mentioned, that wasn't the "reason" NU didn't come out on top but it did set a tone for how the game would be officiated *very* early in the game. And, that type of refereeing did suck mightily by Burr et al.

Yep.  Like it or not, we are still inexperienced and our immaturity shows sometimes.  We are going to be prone to mental meltdowns like this against a veteran team like Ohio State.

The good news is we are still competing with them (and for a time we were beating the snot out of them).  So it's not like just go and take your lumps.  Each of these games, win or lose, is a valuable learning experience for our young team.

Listen, we lost our edge once we got up 18.  We let Ross get hot & OSU strung together back to back possessions with baskets.  To compound that we forgot how to inbounds the ball.  Not ONE screen was set to spring someone open on the press.  LOTS of fouls were called when OSU was aggressive going to the basket.  We didn't attempt to mimic that approach & once the game got within 3 possessions b/c of our ineptness in inbounding the ball, we weren't aggressive to the rim.  We had a shot to really put a plug in the leaking dike when we had an easy alley ooop dunk that for some reason Pitch decided he wanted to go with the showtime reverse dunk.  I'm all for playing loose but is that really the time to try something you haven't done all year?  OSU took advantage of that boneheaded blunder & pushed the ball back up court.  4 point swing when I think that would have put us up 7 or 8.  We lost the game.  The officiating was maddening.  They kept OSU in it & they let a lot of crap go on which put us in a panic.  But we should have been able to overcome this.  It was a good learning experience with a young team.  This game might "light the fire" which we might have lost a little.

I'm looking forward to see how they react in the "real" tournament.  We have a good team.  This might help put us in a seeding that we can make a little run out of.  It would have taken a minor miracle to make a run out of the 8 or 9 seed (which we were trending towards with a win today).

But Thad would have given this game a 10 or 9 while Tim would have given it a 3 or less. So that would mess up that system Norm.

And he also has that smart in the head player Dallas Ville.

That's why you'd look at it over the course of the season.  I doubt Thad would give each of the refs a 10 today and I'm sure Miles wouldn't have handed out nothing but zeros.  There will be games where no one will be blaming the officials and there will be games where everyone is complaining.  I suspect this would be a game where both coaches would be a little less than completely pleased with the officiating.  So, are there officials or crews who consistently score poorly?  I would imagine so.  And that needs to be known.  The integrity of the game depends on the officials being accountable at some point.

I hope next year point of emphasis is on traveling. 50% of jump stops are traveling because players pick up the ball before they start their jump. What is frustrating is when the jump stop result in a foul when they should've called traveling before the foul....
