GoBigRed Posted March 13, 2014 Report Posted March 13, 2014 Too bad. Either get used to it, or stop going. It's begun now, it's caught on, and the students won't ever let it die. Silverbacked1 and Bugeaters1 2 Quote
atskooc Posted March 13, 2014 Report Posted March 13, 2014 OK, so the guy is just totally wrong. We've been through this. Volleyball clap belongs to the volleyball fans. Not original, not for us to borrow, not apropos to the nature of our event. "Who cares? You suck!" seems less sportsmanlike, more rude, and is categorically wrong when some of our conference opponents are introduced. "Husker! Power!" is not necessarily original. But it sets a tone. It says, we don't care who you are, we're not intimidated by you and this is our house and we're going to defend it. It absolutely sets a tone. I've said it before and I'll say it again: This is the best, most uniquely Husker thing we've ever done as a crowd at basketball games. We didn't steal it from Duke. We didn't copy Kansas. It's the best crowd thing we have going. And it should continue. Spot. On. Quote
ladyhusker Posted March 13, 2014 Report Posted March 13, 2014 Wonder if Tim (or Jean, for that matter) has been to a football game. Usually it times out that the opposing team runs onto the field during the Tunnel Walk (if not slightly before...when the stadium is yelling Husker Power). We're playing loud music and Husker highlights, or yelling exactly the same thing. Surely that is unsportsmanlike also? Where are the letters of outrage about that? Oh, right, you were used to finishing knitting a new pair of mittens or reading your dog-eared copy of some classic Tolstoy while you waited for a peaceful tipoff and that pesky yelling is kind of distracting. hhcmatt Posted March 13, 2014 Report Posted March 13, 2014 Overall, it seemed like he enjoyed his first basketball game. Welcome to the bandwagon, Tim! How many Walter Petteway jerseys can we put you down for? jayschool and Shuttlesworth 2 Quote

Silverbacked1 Posted March 13, 2014 Report Posted March 13, 2014 Alright if someone actually has the balls to talk themselves up like this and submit a letter to the editor, they just don't get it. Tim I don't know if you know this, but when Wisconsin deliberately threw the ball right out of bounds multiple times, I screamed my ass off along with 16,000 other fans because they screwed up. That doesn't speak very well of our fan base, does it? Heck we could make these kids cry at night! If you think the Husker Power chant is rude and needs to be discontinued, then what about the "Who cares, you suck" chant that has been used for the past decade? Oh that's right, you've probably never been to a Nebrasketball game before because you're probably a Skerjay from Omaha (see what I did there? Time to stop putting them first Love the Skerjay so much better. Quote
Silverbacked1 Posted March 13, 2014 Report Posted March 13, 2014 Also found an article about Jean. her granddaughter wrote in to say that she is 89, huge Husker fan, stood on Sunday( well sat during time outs, but so did I). And just comes from a different age. i think she will come around as she loves her fake tweeter that is out there. hhcmatt 1 Quote

jimmykc Posted March 13, 2014 Report Posted March 13, 2014 Methinks the real Tim Cavanaugh may have been punked. Or maybe just likes another 15 minutes of fame. Or just wants the Husker Power thing to really catch on permanently. Quote

The blog post hit on a key point that some fans are *very* concerned about perception of the program to opposing teams/fans, e.g. the clapping for the NU football opponent leaving the field win or lose. Silverbacked1 Posted March 13, 2014 Report Posted March 13, 2014 I know that the chant has nothing to do with shaking thier hands after or clapping for the other team. I noticed that it really caused Nothwestern to not play well to start. I was watching the bench and some of the players and coaches, and I think a stat guy at the scores table were really looking around and could see it don't want to say bothered but it got in their heads. I think the gentleman from Omaha is wrong in saying it does nothing for the team. The crowd has been at a fever pitch for the tip and the other team has been shaky to start. I know that it has been because of the noise. And it has been the best since the start of the chant. Now I think we need to come up with something to start the second half. We share our seats with any other couple who sits with us at all the games. The wife of that couple has always thought we should stand to start the second half till the first basket. And she has said that when we were back at the Bob. Now the new thing next year will be, do we only pull out #NOSITDAY when we need to win the big games or does it stay for ever. Do we stand the whole game for South Carolina State when we are up 36? Or is it like the throw back jerseys? Pull it out only when we need it. Also what will happen to the #NOSITDAY if we get blown out at home. Don't see that happening any time soon but it was kind of the prefect storm to have it work like it did. I will stand as much as every body else, just something I have beeen thinking about. Quote

Norm Peterson Posted November 13, 2014 Report Posted November 13, 2014 It was tepid at best. YES, it should be continued. As I have urged many times in the past (and I'll repeat the argument again, just in case anyone missed it) this is uniquely Husker. It fits the moment. It energizes the crowd. It's certainly less disrespectful than "who cares, you suck." And it builds a home-court environment before the opening tip. So, YES we should keep doing it. And doing it. And, as long as we each continue to draw breath, do it some more. Haymarket Husker, jimmykc, Marv and 3 others 6 Quote

nebrasketball21504 Posted November 13, 2014 Report Posted November 13, 2014 And multiple Wisconsin players have since said that was the best college basketball environment they have played in. If it doesn't bother the players then we shouldn't be worried about it. I'm sure they have worse things yelled at them in other road venues. Quote
Red Rum Posted November 13, 2014 Report Posted November 13, 2014 Good to know, I was also late getting to the exhibition game so I didn't know if we were going to keep it up. I'm in. Quote
