Stolen from Illinois Loyalty...

League will have 5 double-plays and 8 single-plays starting with 14-team league next year

"The way we envision it is that you're playing five teams home and away in 2015," said Rudner, who handles Big Ten scheduling. "In 2016, you'll play five different teams home and away. Then in 2017, the other three teams that you haven't played home and away, you'll play home-and-away, plus two other teams from 2015 that you played home and away."

That means every school will play every team at least once. But only five times over a 13-year period will teams meet twice during the regular season.

It seems to me there should be room for a few designated rivalries, in which the two teams play twice every year.

Oh, well. But it seems strange that IU and Purdue would play just once a year for part of that rotation.

I would support moving to a 20 game conf schedule in order to have more double plays and less single plays.

More B1G basketball is definitely in the fans' best interest in lieu of The Citadel's & South Carolina State's of the world gracing the Vault each season~!

I'd prefer to go with a Big 12-esque split, have six home and homes, seven single plays, 19 total league games. There's not a perfect split, but this seems like a solid option. Simplest split would be to break up Northwestern and Illinois.

Wouldn't it better to have 7 home-and-home w/ 6 single-play for a total of 20 games?

It would keep more teams playing H&H and the total # of home games would be identical to the total # of road games.

That could work.

Are you suggesting a divisional format where you play the teams in your division twice and teams on the other side only once? No thanks. This absolutely killed the SEC and has the potential to create an extreme imbalance in your league schedules.

Team no divisions for basketball.

Just for scheduling, not for standings. Big 12 did it just fine for a long time. With as far as the conference stretches now, I think like this would be reasonable.

But sometimes we need one of those games to get everybody some PT. And for keeping the moms of the walk ons happy.

Agreed, and it would be pretty easy to do with 18 games and 13 opponents. If you designate 1 rival team as a double play each year (team A), you'd need 4 more double plays each year. So in year 1 double play teams B thru E, year 2 double play teams F thru I and year 3 double play teams J through M. Then start over in year 4. You'd have a double play against everyone every third year, while still keeping your rival team as a double play each year, and of course single plays against everyone every year.

I can't imagine they won't make that tweak to the final plan. We should be playing Iowa twice every year, let alone Indiana-Purdue, Minny-Wiscy, or MSU-Mich.

The way I see it is that a mere single home game will be "lost" by adding 2 more B1G games w/ more resume-building potential in the process.  With 14 teams in the future of the 'really big' Big Ten, it's imperative that teams play as many times as possible against fellow conference opponents each season.  Otherwise, many teams in the same league will resemble two ships passing in the night!
