ajb5856 Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 Not traveling to Cincy. Poop. @HuskerExtraBR: Tim Miles says Deverell Biggs was late for film session, the reason he won't travel to Cincinnati. #nebrasketball Quote
bball23 Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 Well...one coach suspends a player for being late to a film session...another coach post pictures on twitter of his player that got kicked out of a game and calls it "hustle". I'll take our coach. HuskerActuary, TourneyBound, REDZONEDAN and 4 others 6 1 Quote
Huskerpapa Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 So is this strike two for Deverell? Definitely disappointing. Such a talent. I hope we can leverage his enormous skill set yet harness some of those haphazard directional issues. Quote
FredsSlacks Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 does this mean i have to watch peltz again? Quote
throwback Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 That makes things a lot tougher Saturday. Quote
Concrete Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 That makes things a lot tougher Saturday. not sure about that, honestly. Biggs is obviously one of the most talented guys on the team, but I think Hawkins and Parker have been giving us better minutes than him over the last couple games. This team also NEEDS to learn how to play within the system or else we're going to get destroyed in conference play.. Biggs hasn't allowed us to develop much (system wise) when he's on the court bc of his complete refusal to adapt. Hopefully Biggs takes this as a wake up call Hooper 1 Quote
throwback Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 You may be right about this not affecting the UC game much, but I think points will be very tough to come by, and Biggs gives us our best scoring option at the 1 right now, not to mention his ability to hit FTs late. I think we miss him quite a bit tomorrow. TourneyBound 1 Quote
FredsSlacks Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 you can argue that biggs is our best point guard. he will be missed Quote
kldm64 Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 This does hurt tomorrow but Biggs needs to get his act together as now he will have missed 1/4 of the season due to disciplinary actions. Not good!!! Quote
FredsSlacks Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 i'm guessing miles is punishing him for a minor incident in hopes that it will prevent a bigger one from happening in the future. Quote

I hope we can leverage his enormous skill set yet harness some of those haphazard directional issues. I don't think he's on a straight strike system. If this was another DUI or instance with the law, he would be gone. Hopefully this is the last time something like this happens. Not sure how much we'll miss him. Deverell from 3-4 weeks ago we will miss...DB from the last 2-3 games? Not so much. Quote

Huskerpapa Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 I do not mean to pile on Deverell. He likely is a good kid and kids make mistakes. I go back to his earlier mistake and his formal comment on the situation: “I want to apologize to my teammates, coaches and fans for my actions,” Biggs said in the statement. “I understand the seriousness and the consequences of my actions, have learned from the situation and worked hard to move forward. I look forward to representing Nebraska in a positive manner on and off the court.” In my previous response, I asked if this is strike two...sorry Dimes, this indeed is strike two. It will be interesting to see how Coach Miles approaches the next minor, or not so minor incident that Deverell may become involved with. This is part of the discipline issue that was referenced earlier this season. It relates to the technical that he received after he was fouled a couple of games ago. People can shake their heads and ignore this if you wish, but little issues tend to build into big issues if they go unchecked. That said, Coach Miles is not ignoring these smaller issues, Deverell is once again paying the consequenses of his actions. We need Deverell to understand that there are right ways to do things and wrong ways. We need the type of talent that Deverell brings to the court; so we need Deverell to start living up to the statement he made above. Walk the walk my man! I heard stories about some of Danny Nee's recruits. A couple of the players were, ahem, less than honorable with some of their actions. He surrounded those players with high character players and then charged those players with keeping the, ahem, others in line. I am not necessarily saying that Deverell needs that sponsership, but I am saying that Deverell's little issues are costly to our team...yes I am a bit concerned. hhcdave Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 This is very disappointing. Biggs is now through 25% of his eligible time at Nebraska and has contributed virtually nothing on the court. What's worse is he's not allowing himself and the team to grow together, because he's not out there consistently due to actions off the court and when he is, he has been iffy, at best, from forcing things and turnovers to the stupid technical foul when he went toe to toe with a ref. He needs to understand the clock is ticking... 25% done with your career and you're going backwards, just barely hanging on. Agree that he is definitely at strike two, between the DUI, technical, being suspended for missing film... I would guess he's in the doghouse. Which reminds me of my favorite Danny Nee quote, in regards to Jose Ramos. "He's so far in the doghouse you can't even hear him barking." Quote

HB Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 you can argue that biggs is our best point guard. he will be missed Except that he has been primarily playing the 2, and Miles has commented extensively on Biggs being much better at the 2 Quote

hhcmatt Posted December 29, 2013 Report Posted December 29, 2013 In my previous response, I asked if this is strike two...sorry Dimes, this indeed is strike two. Is he gone if there is one more minor deal like this? I'm not so sure. Had this been anything to do with the law, he'd be gone. This sort of stuff isn't black and white enough for Strike 1-2-3 was my point. Quote
Huskerpapa Posted December 29, 2013 Report Posted December 29, 2013 I am in no way implying that Deverell should be removed from the team. There is a point that needs to be discussed though. The DUI was certainly a major issue and it was dealt with. Many of us notice the body language that sometimes occurs when things do not go Deverell's way. Then came the technical when he did not handle a tough foul that occurred on him. Now the late arrival to a film session. I heard the announcer say something in yesterday's game as well. And yes, I noticed it prior to the announcer saying it. Petteway had hit a free throw. I believe it was Leslee who came up and slapped his hand. Where was everyone else? Petteway held out his hands, yet nobody else came up to congratulate him. That is odd to say the least, and could be a small sign of an underlying issues, to say the most. Major point here is the issue of team discipline. That is the elephant in this room. It was noticed early in the season, and it still is present. The little breakdowns on offense or defense. Those little discipline breakdowns is the difference between winning and losing many games. Those who know me, understand that I am typically the rose colored glasses dude. But for us to take it to the next level, that one little word (discipline) has to be fixed. That brings it back full circle to Deverell's recent transgression. That type of crap cannot happen within a winning program. We have much better talent, now we have to get the heads on straight...if that can happen, the sky becomes the limit. Quote
ajb5856 Posted December 29, 2013 Author Report Posted December 29, 2013 So...this is what I've heard. Take it FWIW. Biggs showed up late to a meeting. Miles, not happy, used some choice words and told Biggs to leave. Miles told Biggs he would call him when he wanted him back. Miles has yet to call him. Miles asked the captains if they wanted Biggs to travel with the team to Cincy and they all voted no. Just what I heard. Let the rumors fly. Will Biggs be on this team for the conference season? hskr4life Posted December 29, 2013 Report Posted December 29, 2013 There must be more behind the scenes than we all know. It would make more sense if captains voted no... I wonder if his attitude has a little to do with it. Quote

throwback Posted December 29, 2013 Report Posted December 29, 2013 Coach Tim Miles said Friday that he's leaving Biggs in Lincoln because the junior guard was late for a Thursday film session. "It's really nothing more than that," Miles said. “Pretty minor incident. Fair, not fair, my decision.” http://journalstar.com/biggs-suspended-for-showing-up-late-to-film-session/article_5b971c6c-43b0-5c35-985c-bef612c213e4.html If Coach Miles was planning to extend Biggs' suspension beyond one game or if this was a decision made by the captains, I'm not sure he'd put this quote out there and call it a "pretty minor" incident. I also don't recall Miles giving any indication that the suspension could be extended when he spoke about it during the pre-game show on the radio. If it was a suspension that could be extended beyond the Cincy game and if Miles wanted it to be open-ended, wouldn't he have just used the "indefinite suspension" label? He was pretty specific about the number of games Biggs & Gallegos were suspended the first time around, so I'd have a difficult time believing he wouldn't have done that again this time if there was any possibility of it being beyond one game. Maybe there is something more to this than what Coach Miles has put out there publicly, but he seems to be a what you see is what you get kind of coach and doesn't play hidden meaning games with his words. I guess we'll see in a couple of days. Quote
