royalfan Posted November 25, 2013 Report Posted November 25, 2013 Several times Petteway happened to get the ball up against shot clock. He had to shoot and they were not high percentage looks. And at least 3 or 4 times Petteway drew the entire defense, flipped it up on the rim and easy putback as there was no weakside d left. These things look bad on shot counts and shooting percentages but helped NU. We need him to be aggressive IMO, and find the open man when that is a higher percentage play than trying to finish. I am still not sure how much I believe in his outside shot. Haven't seen him shoot enough of them yet to determine if I like him taking an open three. A couple were not very open and certainly shouldn't have been taken. If we are going to be a great basketball team, I feel pretty confident that Petteway is going to have to be a huge piece of it. Norm Peterson Posted November 25, 2013 Report Posted November 25, 2013 But let's not pretend that he's perfect and should take all the shots he wants irrespective of the structure of the offense. I don't think anyone has nor will disagree with you here. well, that's no fun. if you can't construct strawmen, what's to become of the straw market? Kinda like the "spewing venom" strawman. Speaking of which, when some express concern that Petteway calls his own number too much and others respond to that by saying it's "venom" to say such things about Petteway, the only thing I can conclude is that they approve of him forcing things and taking shots out of system. And his number of shot attempts compared to his shooting percentage supports the take of those who have tepidly expressed concern about needing to address this. Quote

Royal, I'm glad you brought this up. I agree with you 100% on this. So many on here want to rip Petteway, but never point out the fact that he is one of the best on our team at ATTACKING the hoop. How many times in the past 10 years have I had to read about people bitching and moaning that we never have that "one guy" that can get to the rim? And now, we have a guy that is fearless at getting to the hoop and people want to rip his head off at times. Sure he takes some bad shots, but so do other players. Trust me, he can be frustrating to watch, but I can tell you what, NO WAY IN HELL do we win yesterday without him. He had a few plays late where he just put his head down and took it to the rim and got fouled. Twice I believe he even missed a shot (one time I want to say Shields missed) and who was there for the dirty work to get a rebound and get fouled? Terran. Again....let me clarify. He does some things to make me scratch my head. But he also does a good job IMO of getting to the rim and being aggressive. If he were shooting 50% instead of 41% a lot of you would be thinking he's great. Plus, when he is getting to the line, he is making them (29-33, 87%). 49r 1 Quote
Handy Johnson Posted November 25, 2013 Report Posted November 25, 2013 You're putting the cart WAY ahead of the horse if you're already making generalizations about this team. As the season unfolds, roles will become defined, some players will surprise, others will disappoint. We have some firepower on this roster, including Petteway, it'll be our team defense though that will take us where we want to go... bball23 and leonidas 2 Quote

Silverbacked1 Posted November 25, 2013 Report Posted November 25, 2013 Over the next three years is this going to become a Nick Krenk kind of thing? Except we all yell "don't shoot" when Terran gets the ball. That could get kind of old really fast. Red Rum 1 Quote

Miles' system is based on penetrating to the basket and the position that it puts the defense in. It's entirely possible for Petteway to call his number too much while simultaneously not forcing things or taking shots outside of the system. If TP can figure it out, he truly can become great. If he can't he'll just end up playing less minutes....we have the depth to start doing that this year and next year we really will. Quote
hskr4life Posted November 25, 2013 Report Posted November 25, 2013 One thing to note... Petteway is shooting 88 percent from the line this year. That really helps why he drives. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted November 25, 2013 Report Posted November 25, 2013 I think we need him but I think we need him to play within himself and within the structure of the offense. I think Miles will get things blended. I'm not worried. Quote
TomEadesSucks Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 Does anyone know if you are fouled in the act of shooting and miss, does that count as a shot attempt/miss? Quote

ajb5856 Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 If you're fouled on an attempt it doesn't get recorded as an attempt unless it goes in. Quote
Dean Smith Posted November 26, 2013 Author Report Posted November 26, 2013 This has nothing to do with recording shot attempts but I did learn that there is some obscure rule that says if someone is fouled simultaneously by two different opponents while shooting a three point shot you get four FT's. Just thought that was interesting. I wonder how many officials actually know that rule? Quote

jimmykc Posted November 26, 2013 Report Posted November 26, 2013 How many would you get if simultaneously fouled by three players? Or what about FOUR! I think my head is exploding. Quote

So if you're fouled simultaneously by two different defenders on a two point attempt do you get three FTs? Ok you guys are lame so I looked it up myself. On a multiple foul situation the free throws are awarded on a shots per foul basis. On a two point attempt you get 1 FT per foul so if multiple fouls (2) are called you just get 2 FTs total. On a 3pt attempt where multiple fouls are called you are awarded 2 FTs per foul. So that's where the 4 FTs comes in. hhcmatt 1 Quote

Just thought that was interesting. I wonder how many officials actually know that rule? Interesting. Doubt many do know that rule. Not that it matters as someone always fouls first so they should make that judgement call and decide who it was. It is so close to being impossible for 2 guys to foul at the exact same time that it would be a cop out to make that call. Even if someone fouled a billionth of a second sooner which will always be the case. Refs need to make the determination IMO and not reward someone with 4 FT because they were unwilling to make the determination. Quote
