Any chance he could fill Chin's spot and be our primary recruiter? You have to think having him around for even just a year while he recomposes himself would be an asset to what Nebraska is trying to do here. He just landed the too class in the nation last year, lets offer the man a hefty sum and have him land is a five star

Yeah, the rumor last year was we offered him the job and he almost took it, but, because he'd recruited such an awesome class to UCLA, decided he wanted to stay and coach them.  Boy, looking back on it, not such a great move on his part.  He coulda had such job security here.  New arena.  Instant stardome.  Oh well.  I think things worked out fine for us and perhaps better the way things went than if Howland had come here.

I think both Howland and Nebraska will work out just fine.  I think Miles is the better pick as NU hoops needs someone willing to go the extra "Mile(s)" to turnaround a program that has never had a history of winning consistently nor on the national level, and I dont see Howaland putting that work in and resting on his laurels.

I agree that it worked out pretty well for NU, at least I think it will, but Howland just got fired for not performing up to a standard he was well aware existed when he took the job.  If he's the coach he thinks he is, he'll want to prove he's still capable.  That's a very motivating factor.  I don't think there will be any laurel resting for him.

yeah I was saying that should he have jumped ship from UCLA last year he may have done that.

Ben Howland is a lot bigger than assistant recruiting coach at Nebraska.

Tom Izzo, Mike Krzyzewski, and Ben Howland are the only active coaches who have led three teams to the tournament.

Uh, Dana Altman?  Rick Pitino?  Bill Self?  John Calipari?  Rick Barnes?  Bruce Weber??

Also, Lon Kruger's taken 5 teams to the dance.  Tubby Smith's taken 4.  That's just of the top of my head anyways.

Whoa now how is everyone leaving out the top 2 when it comes to taking teams to the top

Pitino and Calipari have taken 3 teams each to THE FINAL FOUR.  No one else can say that but those two.

Damn, Kamdy, I was hoping my edits would get in there before someone replied!

I also find it interesting that of the coaches on my list, three of those have some kind of K-State ties.

If Doc can get axed by Nebraska and still land a Director of BB operations position at KU, what is the likelihood that a former UCLA coach is going to be the next Director of BB Operations at Nebraska?

I would think Ben - if he wants to stay in the hoops business - will be capable of landing a much higher profile position than this one.

Whoops, sorry for the poor reading comprehension on my part and not using my noggin to fact check such a dumb statement.

Let me redux that statement - Tom Izzo, Mike Krzyzewski, and Ben Howland are the only active coaches to have competed in three consecutive Finals 4s.

What must it be like to coach at a school where you win your conference title and get fired for not doing well enough? Something seems seriously wrong with that.

To be correct though...he didn't win his conference the year he was fired.

or the year before, or the year before that, or the year before that.

Imagine the expectations for the next UCLA head coach...  and, the Bruins had one of their best injured & out for the final few games. How is Howland to account for the team's sudden deficiency and immediately move forward, thus avoiding UCLA's eventual exit from the Pac-12 tourney & NCAA's earlier than hoped for???

It does harken back to comments made by a prospective, up-and-comer Urban Meyer after Frank Solich was fired by Steve P. for going 9-3... it was something to the effect of "who fires a coach who is having that kind of success?"
