Pigs get fat.  What do hogs get?  Slaughtered.  Pigs get fat; hogs get slaughtered.

What the hell does that have to do with Nebraska basketball?  I'll tell you what.

What happens if we beat Ohio State today and make the NIT?

Then we've done way, waaaaaay better than anyone expected.  Not just us fans but the national basketball audience.  And people notice those things.  Including other schools with job openings.

If we get too good too fast (like a hog) doesn't that increase the likelihood that other schools come calling?  With bags full of money?

So, like, if the team that was expected to finish last in conference winds up beating Ohio State and/or going to the NIT ...

It's like Murphy's 4th Law of Combat:  Don't be conspicuous -- it draws fire.  The quicker we become better than people expect, the quicker other people are going to try to come steal our coach.  Pigs get fat; hogs get slaughtered.

So, the point.  People often wonder what my point is and it is this:  Are we better off losing to Ohio State today?

I will address your fears in a couple of ways:

1. We have bags and bags of cash.  Pretty much as much as any school.  OSU and UM don't need coaches.

2. Miles loves the B1G and I don't know if he would take another job in the same conference.

3. Our basketball situation is really good right now with the new arena and practice facility.

4. I doubt Miles is the type of coach to leave after 1 year.  That would be pretty low.

However, if Minnesota came calling; which is Miles dream job; all bets are off.

And if you are insinuating that Arkansas is going to come calling that would be a lateral move at best.  And Miles really likes the upper midwest.

Plus to build this program we NEED players.  And one way to get players is to get noticed.  Maybe if we win a some tourny games players like that kid you posted the video of will notice us over Iowa State.  We badly need to get noticed. If we could win 2 more games imagine how much pub we would get on ESPN and CBS.

Publicity is good; we need it desperately.

Seems like a catch 22.  The question is, what kind of person is Tim Miles?  That's the trump card.  Does he want to stick around long enough to build something substantial, or does he bolt the first chance he gets for a "better gig."  What's a "better gig"?  One that pays more?  Minnesota?

To answer you're question, I don't think it's ever a bad thing the we beat Ohio State.  So many unknowns can become of it.  One of them is maybe we get an even better coach than Tim Miles.

Plus.  I hate OSU, so that's good.

Heres my feeling: Tim will not leave anywhere in the near future. He knows the upside that there is and the new arena opening up keeps him here. If nebraska happens to win tonight, that will create so much national attention and would create one of the biggest step fowards that nebraska has had in a very long time. Tim banks on building programs from ground zero. He does not want to take over a national title contender right away. Tonight would be an absolutely enourmous win plus with being able to play on CBS tomorrow (don't know the last time our men were on CBS). Now will we win tonight?? its unlikely, but hey.....thats why they call it march madness.

I keep hearing how Minnesota is Miles' dream job.  Why?  It's not like DVH and Arkansas where we're talking going back to coach at the ole alma mater.  He has no connection to the University of Minnesota that I'm aware of.  Of course, I've been wrong many times.  It would be nice if someone could post an article where Miles talks about his love affair with U of M.  :)

I feel pretty embarrassed. My answer was, "hogs get pleasantly plump", so I guess I got it wrong.

Oh, and why is there a cap on giving out positive "votes"? I know I've been up-voting posts like a drunken happy-sailor, but no idea we had a quota. I was just expressing my joy at winning yesterday and sharing that with everyone else. Is that so wrong?

Oh, and you never worry about losing your coach to success. Many of the successful mid-major programs who have served as coaching farms for Div 1 have been able to sustain success while turning over coaches. And frankly, we're not Gonzaga. We have tons more resources at our disposal. We'll be fine as long as we have an administrative commitment to basketball.

And to Norm's original question.  Let's beat the Buckeyes tonight.  And, as long as we're winning tonight, might as well win the whole damn thing.  :)

I'm surprised that no one has put up a clip of that locker room speech from Major League about winning the whole damn thing. Every time I read someone saying that, that clip pops in my head. No Major Leauge fans?

Pardon that whole Go Mets crap. Best clip I could find.

I don't think there is a direct quote.

Essentially it's a combination of Miles stating that his goal was to be in the B1G and the fact that all of his jobs besides Colorado State have either been in Minnesota or Minnesota adjacent.

It's also this combination that makes this entire thread pointless...even if Minnesota has been his dream job for his entire life he has lived almost his entire life in a world where Nebraska couldn't be part of that dream.

I'm not sure if this post is thread is supposed to make me feel like it's great we got beat down by Ohio State because now we get to keep our coach? How did that work out for our other coaches? When is the last time someone stole a coach from Nebraska? Has this ever happened?

If we win tonight (as improbable as I think that is) I'm going to start thinking we're a team of destiny.

In the last 13 seasons (since the turn of the century) we have won a total of 4 conference tourney games.  Last night made it 5.

If tonight makes it 6, it's going to be easier to believe that we have a miracle run in us.

We lost Dave Van Horn to Arkansas and never really recovered.  Meanwhile, Arkansas is going to the CWS and we're not.  So, yeah, I wonder if it had taken Van Horn a bit longer to build the program up if maybe he wouldn't have turned himself into such a hot commodity that Arkansas felt it had to have him.

Norm, I think there was only 1 school DVH would leave Nebraska for. Unfortunately for us, Arkansas came calling. I don't think there is 'that 1 school" for Miles. He has top notch facilities, and we got the money to pay his salary if other schools come calling. I think Miles is here for awhile. Hopefully, quite awhile.

What the hell is up with this?  nm.  I fixed it.

Don't take it personally...given that you're the Cy Young of the HHC I probably agree and disagree the most with your threads than anyone else. This is a thread talking about the pros of losing to Ohio St less than an hour before the game. Miles winning games like this won't get him poached. Miles losing games like this will eventually get him fired.

Sign me up for poached because I've known nothing but fired.

Well, yeah, that's a good point.  (Moe Iba quit, just for the record.)

It's been in the back of my mind the last couple of days that Miles might attract attention from other schools - even after just one year.  But he's a family man.  Hopefully the wife and kids love Lincoln by now.  Think of how hard it would be on your kids to pull up stakes two consecutive years in a row.  Not to mention the parents of both sides living in S.D.
