Drivable First-round Venues

Recommended Posts

Those flight prices will be much higher by the time you know where you are going.    The last time we went to the tournament I used SW points to book flights to several of the locations knowing I would be able to cancel and just get the points back.   Takes a lot of saved points though.  If you don't have the points you can also book the tickets on SW and get flight credit for the ones that you cancel.   Worked great for me last time as San Antonio was one of the ones that I picked as a possible destination.    This year I already planned a trip to Vegas for that first weekend and don't really want to cancel that - but might book a cheap flight from Vegas to Salt Lake City Thursday morning just in case :)

In other words, it's not a terrible drive, but the downside is you gotta go to Memphis in order to go to Memphis.

Hey, don't be bagging on Memphis.  Mrs. cip is a huge Elvis fan.  We've been to Graceland once. Okay, it's in the slums now.  Never been to Beale Street.  We will in about a month.  🙂

For whatever reason, I think Nebraska is destined for Memphis...

Honestly that's better than expected. I had heard some not so good things, glad it was more hype than reality...

If you haven't been there in a while you'll be absolutely shocked by the remodel. It's a different building.

Looks like twice as much to fly out of Lincoln to Denver versus Omaha or am I looking at it wrong

I'm thinking that's probably accurate. That's a big concern I've had for its viability tbh, I thought Lincoln had put a lot of eggs into the RED WAY airlines 'basket' and it seems that it was a gamble that kind of screwed 'em.

It’s not just that Redway flopped either.  Its how quickly if flopped that will scare off future thoughts of flights into Lincoln.

However, that drive from Omaha airport (30ish-45 minutes) is probably your a comparable commute from the airport to the hotel in some of the big cities that host.

Omaha's airport is getting over $1B in upgrades in the next few years. It's incredible the investment they've done already, too.

I'll put money on we play in Omaha before we play in Dayton.  Omaha is drivable.  😉

If it comes down to it, Omaha is walkable

Anything is walkable. But you should probably start walking wherever we end up now to get there in time.

I mean, just in the event you got a wild hair and decided you wanted to go take a road trip to check out some 1st and 2nd round NCAA tourney basketball action.

March 21-23

CHI Center, Omaha, NE -- 58.5 miles; 1 hr 3 min

Vivint Smart Home Arena, Salt Lake City, UT -- 879.4 miles; 12 hrs 59 min

March 22-24

Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Indianapolis, IN -- 650.1 miles; 9 hrs 51 min

FedExForum, Memphis, TN -- 652.2 miles; 10 hrs 22 min

I imagine Purdue will get the 1 seed in Indy, and if we’re 8-9 seed, that throws this possibility out? I’m struggling to find location by seeds

They mix & match locations for the 1st rd. with various brackets. There is no way to guess how it will actually go other than a Purdue being placed in Indy, that seems about as a sure of a bet as there is. The rest of the bracket is a total crapshoot for the rest of the Big Ten teams, anyway.

Got it, thanks. So when everyone is saying they want to be a 7 or 10 seed so they can be in Omaha that’s not necessarily true? Omaha doesnt have to be 7-10?
