Wish I was kidding. Sleeping in the basement tonight. Unfortunately, COSTCO was already closed by the time I remembered they sell those little room air conditioner units.

We cooked outside tonight to make sure not to heat the kitchen. Grilled ribeyes. Unfortunately, the grill ran out of propane mid-cook. (As if nothing else could go wrong.) Fortunately, nothing was overcooked and the steaks turned out a pretty decent mid-rare. But that's only because -- not to brag or anything, but -- I'm gifted.

One of the dogs is pretty chill about it all; the other is like WTF it's hot in here. She begged to come inside and I opened the door. She trotted in real quick and then stopped, looked up at me with eyes that said, OK, what kinda sh!t you tryna pull here?

On the bright side, if we HAD a bed bug problem, we just nipped it in the bud by superheating the inside of our house to something approximating the surface of the sun.

Any AC guys out there? Is it just coincidence that the system didn't blow when it was just 85 and toasty? As opposed to 105 and post-apocalyptic? Just curious. Hopefully we can get one of yous guys out here tomorrow.

PS --- I totally forgot the Republican Presidential debate was tonight. I feel bad because I intended to DELIBERATELY miss it; instead, I just accidentally missed it.

By the way, this is NOT a political post; this is a specifically and ardently Apolitical post. I'm so done with this nonsense. It's like the two political parties put Steve Pederson and Harvey Perlman in charge of deciding who our two presidential options would be. FFS, THIS is the best we can do, America?

Don't answer that. PLEASE don't answer.

It's like if they were going to put two new fast-food places into the student union and they COULD have had Five Guys and Raisin' Canes and instead went with Vic's Cornpopper and Dairy Queen. Sorry, Vic's. You deserve a better analogy than that.

Sorry, not trying to open up any "political door" on this forum, but does anyone else remember during the Democrat primary debates in 1992 when our very own Bob Kerrey got caught on a hot mic telling Bill Clinton an off-color joke about lesbians? I mean, that was funny, I don't care who you are. Not the joke, but the fact he got caught telling it to Bill Clinton of all people. C'mon, laugh. It's better than crying.

Was looking online for temporary solutions and found this gem.

Cool the Room with Ice

Pour a glass of water, dump ice cubes into it, and place your hand above the cup. The air feels cooler here, doesn’t it? You can supersize this cooling effect by putting a big block of ice on a baking sheet or in a casserole dish. The cooling effect from the ice helps keep the room more comfortable until your broken air conditioner is fixed.

I feel so ... irresponsible ... for not having a big block of ice on hand for just such an occasion. I mean I must be the only one who failed to do this, right?

Sleeping in the basement when your AC is out works well in theory.

I'm thinking about actually going in early to work tomorrow. And when I say "early" I mean "right now." They have AC.

I'm not at the melting point of structural steel, but I'm at the place where it bends and falls on building #7.

Sorry to hear that, Normy. Hope you get some shut-eye. You seem desperate yet lucid, a lack of rest could lead to deplorable day thereafter. Seriously hope this will be fixed asap, it sucks to not have A/C in this ridiculous weather. I have a fair sense of certainty that the pioneers were a hearty sort ready for pert'near anything standing in their way.

The only thing I remember about Kerry's 1992 run was the ill-advised commercial he shot in a hockey rink.  Oops, sorry about that.

The AC in half of my school went out on Monday.

It was 90 degrees in the teachers lounge on Tuesday afternoon.

Not good. Not good at all.

I grew up in a small community and our newish home did not have an air conditioner until I was a sophomore in high school.  Then, we had a simple window air conditioner until I left for college.  I moved into Abel Hall and it was air conditioned, I thought I was in heaven...

Now, I struggle if the temperature isn't below 70.  Sad.

Here is how we survived back then.  The house was closed up until the sun went down.  Then, windows were opened and fans were put on.  If we tried that today, can you imagine the break-in's and thefts.  During the day we were always outside. We had ways to find cool breezes on even the hottest days.  We also drank lots of water by way of water hoses.  I guess most of us didn't know any better and it sure the hell was better than winter blizzards and snow drifts.

By the way, what did anybody do to survive without air conditioning or heat in the winter?

I remember my dad would always point out those people who probably had it much worse than I did.  At least I could always run a little bath water and cool down, or run through a sprinkler.

I didn't have it as bad as you.  We got a window unit in our 2 story farm house when I was 11.  It was in the living room, so we got to sleep on the floor when it was unbearably hot.  Didn't happen often.  Working out on the farm in the heat, shade and fans in the house made it seem much more bearable.  It's all perspective.
