Here's the punch-paragraph of the article

According to NCAA guidelines, the punishment for athletes who wager on their own sport at another school is a loss of 50% of their remaining eligibility. Those who bet on their own teams or other sports at their own schools — as Ulis allegedly did by gambling on Iowa football — “will potentially face permanent loss of collegiate eligibility in all sports.”

He'd probably be done if it was Iowa basketball. I'd guess it will be one year but I suppose it's possible it  will end up being just part of the season.

Has it been determined if he is going to lose a year?

Can the lost year be considered his redshirt and thus he would still be a Junior going into next season?

The importance of seeing a resolution to this is not of insignificant consequence as it has an impact of recruiting.

Last, does anyone know if there is still a chance it will be a permaban? As that completely off the table?

I actually thinks this benefits us.  can Come in next year are replace Boogie and give us a solid backup to Lawrence!

Instead it would allow us to move Lawrence back to the off-guard, and Ulis could start at point.

Unless something changes he will lose this year of eligibility and will have one more year left only because he has that extra covid year. Seems like he should be ok for next year as he didn't bet on his own team. In theory he could try and appeal for another year after next season but seems pretty unlikely.

I saw on Twitter there are some questions floating around the legality of how law enforcement obtained the information to begin its investigation - not sure if it's true or not, but, if so, it could at least put the legal charges against all the players in some jeopardy.

I doubt it would affect the NCAA portion of the punishment, since they're separate, but who knows with the NCAA these days. Probably would take several months to sort everything out legally regardless, so it ultimately probably won't mean much for his eligibility at NU.

Lawrence's path to retaining a starting spot seems a lot better at PG than SG.  I recognize that his 3PT% was much higher last year playing off the ball, but to my eyes he had a lot of shots drop that didn't look like they should have.  That combined with a relatively small sample size allowed him to hit at a 37% clip from deep.  I don't think he is as bad as this year's 27% indicates (he has been forced into taking quite a few low percentage shots to avoid shot clock violations), and I will admit he seems more comfortable as a catch and shoot shooter than as someone who creates his own shot.  But watching the rotation on his shot vs someone like Keisei is night and day difference.  Lawrence just isn't a shooter.  And he also isn't great at finishing at the rim.  So if he isn't a shooter and isn't a slasher, do we really want him to be a long-term answer at the 2?

His best fit would be as a combo guard coming off the bench, basically like Sam.  Someone who can log some minutes as the primary ballhandler or as the off-guard.  He isn't a great passer, great playmaker, or a great shooter, but he also isn't terrible at anything.  And he defends well.  There's a spot for him in the rotation for sure.  If he can make a leap from year one to year two as a PG, then I think he gets the nod over Ulis. But if he doesn't then I think Ulis is the 1 and either Hoiberg, Janowski, or a to-be-named transfer will be the first choice 2.

I just said move him to the 2, not start him.   Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if he portals.  I just don't see him improving enough to ever be a point guard who you can win with at a high level.   I agree with everything you posted, other than the making a leap at the 1 point.

I'm hesitant to give up on a kid who could literally be going through a sophomore slump.

There is a  lot of value in having players in the program for the entirety of their college career.

With Keisei graduating, Lawrence shifting to the 2 so Ullis can play point probably works just fine. Lawrence can function as the PG when Ullis sits and between those guys, Hoiberg, and Janowski we have ourselves a backcourt rotation

I agree completely.  I would love having players here for 3 or 4 years.   But that is now the exception rather than the rule.  I wasn't posting what I wanted to happen, but what I think has a fair chance of happening in this current environment.

Pretty sure its Thor

Thorir earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Nebraska in May of 2021.  So I think you may be right.  I believe he could have played one additional year here, but opted out to play pro.

Right, played 4 years, but could've played a 5th with his covid year

Yeah, sounds like some possible sketchiness with obtaining the info.

But, didn't Ulis already do a plea agreement? So it wouldn't make much difference now legally for him if its already ajudicated.

So going back, if you don't want to count Thor (even though I think he satisfies the conditions listed), you'll have to go back to 2019 and Miles' last season.  That year we had three players who played their whole career at Nebraska and graduated (at least I think all three graduated).

Glynn Watson

Tanner Borchardt

Johnny Trueblood

Then it's Thor, and that's it.  With the transfer rules the way they are and NIL, it may be a rare sight for us to see guys stay here for their whole career and graduate.

If I was making a list I'd also count Roby as he spent his entire career here before opting for the NBA.

Definitely counts, especially since both Roby & Glynn Watson Jr. were scholarship athletes, those are the 3 with Thor being the 3rd. Trueblood & Borchardt are both walk-ons who only saw action when it was relatively dire for NU, and I think Tanner left the team for a while. Anyway, it's a very short list in the past 7 years, for certain.
