Serious question for anyone who wants to take a swing at it: What does Matar Diop have that Treyson Anderson lacks?

Timing.  Matar Diop committed to Nebraska in July of 2023 when Nebraska was in the market for a project to fill out their roster.  Anderson committed to NDSU in June of 2023, a month before Diop committed to Nebraska. If Anderson waits until this year there is a chance it happens.

looked back at Page 1 of this thread and laughed as I used approximately the same gif when he signed to NDSU in 2023

To turn it around, I think what Matar might lack that Anderson seems to have is good body control and coordination.

Personally i wouldn't have a huge problem with 2 interior projects, there are only so many kids who can play in any given season. Hoiberg's had a 7-, 8-, and 9-man rotation in his time in Lincoln. It would be beneficial to have guys who are actively developing & helping the rotation players prep for the upcoming games, it's not a bad thing to have really tall, fairly skilled dudes on the roster, and serviceable when necessary. That's why I had previously wished Olej Kojents had stuck around, tbh.

I agree

I was referring to this past season with Olej sticking around, btw.

That was one of the reasons Oleg left, he was still a project.  My take referenced the need for Diop to be a rotational player next year.  If he is still a project, we will be hurting unless we opt for another transfer big.  That leaves room for a project.

Of course, much of this is predicated on all of our eligible players returning.

I do think the opt for a transfer big, but one that can play the 4 or 5 like allick this year, depending on situation. In that scenario, it still gives diop room, but he needs to be ready to provide situational rim protection next year at minimum imo.

Once again seems like a timing thing and if Anderson had held out until this summer he might have garnered an offer from us.

With the way the transfer portal works pretty easy to see why we would wait and also easy to see why Treyson would commit to NDSU.

Former 4-star Max Murrell is a senior at Stanford averaging 2.7 pts for a .500 team.

Former no-star Mike Daum turned into a 4-star in college and is now a Euro pro.

Former 4-star Isaac Traudt is averaging 3.3 points for Team Voldemort.

Former no-star Mr. Baylor Batenhorst is playing like a 5-star somewhere else.

The local guys we tried to recruit out of high school sometimes don't pan out as well as the local guys we (and everyone else) overlooked.

Mid-majors are clearly not farm clubs for the Nebraska Basketball team and there's no guarantee that a kid who leaves the area will ever come back even if they blossom as a mid-major and become worthy of Power 5 basketball. We've been fortunate to find guys through the portal who were not local. Maybe it's a wash. You just hope that the local kid you passed over doesn't wind up better than the non-local kid you took instead.

I think sometimes you just take a reach on a local kid because I think we all kind of like cheering for the local kids. Even if they come off the bench.

And then there’s Sam Hoiberg.

I’m pretty sure with the developments of two extraordinarily skilled 5s who get massive NIL deals and an offense that runs through them that finding skilled 5s in the portal becomes Fred’s new Transfer U signature.

I might be wrong but I think this is just going to be something we do now.  Mast is incredible in our system.

Have to get a big in the portal.   He'll still be a project.

After seeing Keita walk almost normally hoping that he's a candidate to pick up Allick's 20 minutes a game.

I'm most likely, completely wrong on this, but I still think he might play this season...

If he does he's blowing through an entire year of eligibility so caveat emptor
