Norm Peterson Posted October 7, 2014 Report Posted October 7, 2014 Anymore, "hype" almost seems to mean "undeserved attention" or "overly optimistic expectations" as in "that's just hype." Thing is, the notice we're getting is deserved. We finished all alone in 4th in a very tough Big Ten last season and we return practically everyone from that team, plus we've added a couple of additional elements. You can say we won't sneak up on anyone this year, but by the end of the season last year, do you really think anyone was looking past us? I don't. On paper, we deserve every bit of the attention we're getting. People don't call it hype when it's Wisconsin or Michigan State. The only reason they use the word "hype" for us is because we haven't been in this position before. But that doesn't mean we don't belong in this discussion, because we certainly do. Exhibits "A": last year's predictions of--a 12th place finish for Huskers in the B1G, no mention of Petteway in Nebraska's "Top Newcomers," Wisconsin as No. 5 in the League, Indiana No. 4 in the league, Ohio St. No. 2 in the league, Penn St.'s coach as Coach of the Year, Wisconsin as one of "the Rest," or how about "Nebraska should take a step back this year." Or how about this as an accurate statement: "My predictions are notably inaccurate". . . but they are fun nonetheless. Quote

Norm Peterson Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 And, speaking of Kenpom, I haven't seen his pre-season rankings for this year, BUT ... if we finished top 45 last year, and we return, well, as much as we return, we can't go down, can we? So, the prediction that had us about 40th in the country and bottom 6 in the league, well, can't buy it. Quote

But I agree - we shouldn't drop from our postseason ranking last year (#44). Here is an explanation of how his preseason rankings are determined. We will get docked for his "base level of the program" component, but should fare well in the "personnel" component. Quote

As Rudy T. once said, "You can't measure the heart of a Champion". Yes this is true, and Miles has proven his ability to overachieve every season at NU so far. But my worry is that with all of the accolades and hype this team has going into the season, they may have issues with added pressure to perform up to or above expectations. Which is why personally I'm not buying into the hype...yet. Having that said, it's really nice to have a team that's being talked about so much in the offseason. Quote
hhcmatt Posted October 8, 2014 Report Posted October 8, 2014 Yes this is true, and Miles has proven his ability to overachieve every season at NU so far. How will the loss of Craig Smith factor into the overall ability of the staff to out coach people? Quote

I think Molinari was probably the closest thing you can find to bridge the gap with knowledge and go to guy on the bench for certain situations like he did with Smith. Quote
