This just in from BTN.com.http://btn.com/2014/05/04/big-ten-big-east-launch-gavitt-tipoff-games/ Question is will this put an end to the Huskers Bluejay game every year ?

That's a good question.  The statement of

Teams from both conferences already meet in some traditional rivalry games, and those matchups will continue during the 2014-15 season.

seems to imply it's possible though obviously all the schools in the B1G are free to schedule whoever they want outside of conference obligations.

It could be a way for Creighton to end the series as I see it. Unless the the two conference's chose to stay away from that match up in the games between the two conference's. Then they could have the game every year.

I don't get any sense that CU wants to discontinue this series...we are not that scary...

Fox Sports 1 better figure out how to be in more homes, right now it's WAY behind BTN in households served!

Surprised one or two games each year aren't going to be neutral court games in Madison Square Garden... that would have been much better exposure for the Big Ten and. one would imagine, for the Big East, as well.

Yeah that's what I was wondering when I first saw it - I thought maybe one night of the four would be played at MSG or something, especially when the B1G is trying to make in-roads in the NYC metro with the addition of Rutgers. Maybe they will end up doing that down the road.

I don't think it ends the NU-CU series, but they may have to be more creative or skip a season on occasion. As an example if you look at NU's non-con schedule this past season of 12 games. If you play 3 in a tournament, that leaves 9 you can schedule. But if NU was already scheduled to go to Omaha, and then with the ACC series and the BE series you could be assigned two more road games. I'm not sure NU's administration would be pleased with just 6 non-con home games for 15 total home games, especially with a sold-out arena now.

The B1G office will be mindful of this type of situation I'm sure, but it'll be tricky logistically to ensure each B1G team isn't necessarily handed 2 road games in the ACC and BE series if they already are locked into a road game or a neutral site in-season tournament.

With each B1G team likely only playing in this BE series 4 or 5 times over the 8-year contract, it probably won't be that big of a deal in terms of scheduling, but BE teams may have more scheduling problems as they'll be playing in it 6 or 7 times over the 8-year contract. (14 teams vs 10)

Wiscy-Marquette play every year too right? Maybe they incorporate the annual NU-CU and Wisc-Marq games into the B1G-BE series on occasion, just to make it easier on scheduling for everyone involved.

And there certainly are some other in-state/regional types of games that don't get played every year that could happen as part of this - Xavier-OSU, DePaul-Illinois/NW, Butler-Indiana/Purdue, PSU-V'nova, Seton Hall/St John's-Rutgers, G'town-Maryland, etc.

Sounds like there will be a press conf with more info Monday at 11:30 Central - should be interesting to see how it plays out.

Overall solid move by the B1G.  While I'd rather see the Pac-12 in something like this, the Big East is a decent haul for raising the overall RPI and exposure of the league.  It's also part of their push East that began with the grabs of Rutgers and Maryland.

The other current "challenge" type deals are

B1G-ACC

B12-SEC

Wouldn't surprise me to see them put the BTT in MSG or Barclay's on at least a semi-regular basis.

No idea if this would be a nugget about basketball or the conference in general as Dienhart covers basketball and football.

Other than some slight nostalgia I don't miss the Big 8/12 a bit.

True...could we be talking about future B1G member UConn within the next couple months???

I just wish we were closer to other schools. Really hard to make those road trips

I would imagine this BE series, along with the ACC series, puts an end to Delany's talk about expanding to 20 or 22 conference games. Teams' budgets can't afford to have them play so many road games.

And I thought I read somewhere the B1G has put some feelers out there about playing the B1G Tourney at MSG in the not too distant future. I know it's set for Chicago in 2015 - anyone know how far out has the league awarded the B1G Tourney?

...said West Virginia who immediately regrets their decision.

NU and Creighton need to continue to play annually.  I'm not terribly excited about this B1G-Big East series but Delany wants exposure to the New York TV market.

So, multiple reports today confirm that putting the Big Ten Tournament in NYC is a very real desire for Delaney:

Another new venue also is under strong consideration, two league sources told The World-Herald on Monday.

Brooklyn, New York, is a site high on Commissioner Jim Delany’s wish list as he looks for Big Ten exposure in the new markets added by Maryland and Rutgers, which come aboard in July as the 13th and 14th members.

During the 2014 Big Ten men's basketball tournament in Indianapolis, a league official told the Journal Sentinel the event could be moving east — perhaps to Washington, D.C., New York or New Jersey — as early as 2017.

That move is on the verge of being finalized.

Delany wouldn’t be specific, but he acknowledged that the league also will look to play its men’s basketball tournament in the New York area. The Atlantic Coast Conference in March signed a two-year deal at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., beginning in 2017. The ACC is scheduled to play at the Verizon Center in 2016.

The Big Ten is looking to put its conference tournament in the New York area at either Madison Square Garden or the Barclays Center in Brooklyn in future years as well. The new cities would rotate with traditional homes Chicago and Indianapolis.

When are the Big Ten leaders going to realize that the Northeast does not care about college athletics?

IMHO, I think the B1G seems to be more catering to their huge alumni bases in NYC & DC...

I agree about the wow factor. But we should get a good RPI game out of it and will allow us to maybe get inroads to the basketball rich East Coast.

That is what I think will help more than the games themselves.

When TV sets are outlawed in the north-east.
