Apologies in advance for what's probably a stupid question, but I've never had a reason to really follow top-level/highly-ranked basketball recruiting before :P so I don't know the answer - do top rated basketball players switch verbals as often as football players seem to do? I'm guessing the answer is no in large part because of the early signing period.

Just curious if NU's coaches make any effort to keep recruiting ER, hoping for a late switch. Like I said, I doubt switches happen often enough to warrant continuing to try to recruit him, but was just curious from those who know.

Coaching changes are about the only reason guys open up or they commit a year or two early and regret it aka Hammond to OU. It's less than a month to signing day it's a done deal for ER.

Whoa, Nellie!

We lost a four star recruit to an SEC team. Not the end of the world.

Tim Miles & Co. have a thorough list of players they've been developing as potential recruits and, according to public comments, have a thoroughly developed set of priorities on who to pursue and a strategy for doing so. Moreover, there are always Tim Miles surprises out there, such as Colton Iverson at CSU (drafted by the Celtics) and Walter Pitchford. Unfortunately, the coaches rarely explain their priorities or strategies to the public, so we are left with our speculations and uneducated guesses that keep message boards like this in high demand.

Perhaps we should simply enjoy the ride . . . but speculating and guessing and fretting and stewing are a heck-of-a-lot more fun and entertaining. But some of the posts above seem a bit too close to the ledge for our current reality.

Rational thought and message board recruiting discussion are rarely combined succinctly, but you pulled it off.   <_<

I would rather sign one in the fall, and then see what plays out before we throw an offer out to someone who sticks, I.e why throw out Benny for another Benny? I think Webster plays the 2 a lot. I think we will see what happens w this team and decide on a direction. I am hoping they have 3 spots in the 2015 class.

What now?

I would propose that one possible option is to scour the earth for an immediately-eligible graduate transfer next spring.

Miles has said we're one big away.  We lose Ray from this team but he's our only senior and we have an open spot so we have two spaces to fill and one commit.

We could go the juco route.  But I'm going to suggest that perhaps the best way at this point to land a quality big for next year who would be able to help out immediately would be to try for a graduate transfer.

This program is in good shape with young talent right now.  (Not great shape, but certainly good shape.)  We'd be maybe a quality big away from being a contender next season.

There are quality guys who graduate every year looking to upgrade to a better program or get better playing time.  Northwestern, for example, brought in a graduate-transfer last year from Louisville in Jared Swopshire who averaged nearly 10 points and 7 rebounds per game for them a season ago.

Maybe the best place at this point to get immediate help along the front line would be the graduate transfer market at season's end.

I am not sure bringing in a JUCO with 2 years of experience would be the best route.  Right now we have Pitchford, Parker, Petteway, Shields, and Vucetic all sophomores.  Adding a typical 2 for 2 JUCO will mean six spots opening up after the 2016 season.  Losing five players is rough, and losing six an additional player to coach up.  Similarly, adding a graduate transfer will have a similar impact as you now have to replace Smith, Rivers, Biggs and the graduate transfer after the 2015 season.

I really appreciated all the heart Almedia, Ubel and Talley gave us last year, but I do not want another season where Miles is limited to five starters and two reserves.  I would prefer Miles brings in 3 guys a year with the 13th scholarship being used for a quality transfer (JUCO or graduate) or redshirt a raw big man.

I'd be OK having 4 spots to offer for 2015.  You only invest 1 year in a graduate transfer kid and then his spot is opened up right away again.  It's like having a one-and-done freshman.  It's low risk and potentially high reward.  And it solves the problem of needing immediate help in the post.

As Miles has publicly observed, we're one big man away.  At this point, I'm not sure that going the juco route is a better way to secure immediate help.  If we need to leverage Shavon Shields' junior year to give us our best shot at making the dance (and making noise once we get there) then getting a big man in here is imperative.

There's no guarantee of finding a graduate transfer, but they happen every year and some of the players are pretty solid gets.

If we could have a mulligan on things, I'd much rather we have a transfer from Kentucky or North Carolina sitting out this year with that open 13th spot.  We're not using it anyway.  The ship sailed on Elbert Robinson.  A lot of the top jucos will have already committed.

A graduate transfer may be our best option at this point.  Certainly an option to consider.

lanigan, you mean 3 in '15?  I thought Morrow was a '15 kid.  And the '15 kids would replace Biggs, Rivers and Smith, so that would be three spots.

I wish we had three spots for '14.  I'm still not against a transfer for one of the available '14 spots.  Either a grad transfer eligible immediately for one year or a kid who sits out a year with three seasons left to play.  Someone who fills a need down the road.

Thats still possible if someone leaves the team.

and we have to factor in getting Pinder in '15 as well.

which still gives us a minimum 2 left to get for the 15 class

i figured you knew, i didnt think one of the other posters above knew. I personally would rather have Pinder, plus a true big or if a dynamic 4/5 (ala pitchford with more inside game) and maybe a spark plug 2 guards. we need a few microwave players from deep going forward.

Miles seems to be targeting quite a few combo guards in 2015.  Rogers, Ali, Crawford, Fleming.
