Does anyone know much about this guy?  I don't really know much about him.  I've read a lot about his dad, but not a lot about him.

Also, what exactly will his job as "administrative coordinator" consist of?

I'm not questioning the hire.  I'm sure it is a good hire, because Miles seems to know what he is doing and I trust him.  I was just curious to know more about him.

The newest member of Nebraska basketball coach Tim Miles’ staff came highly recommended from a coaching colleague and has ties to Nebraska’s former conference.

Teddy Owens, the son of former Kansas basketball coach Ted Owens, has been hired as an administrative assistant, Miles confirmed Tuesday.

Owens, 31, spent the last two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Oklahoma. He was hired by OU coach Lon Kruger, who previously coached in the Mountain West Conference at UNLV, the same time Miles coached MWC rival Colorado State.

“I trust Lon,” Miles said. “He’s been a guy that when I’ve needed some advice on different things, he’s been great to be able to help. So when he highly recommended Teddy, I was very interested.

“And as I got to know Teddy, I could see what Lon was talking about. He’s going to be a great fit for the Huskers.”

Owens occupies the spot previously held by Ron “Chin” Coleman but with a different title and duties. Coleman, who left in September to become an assistant coach at Bradley, was director of player personnel.

Miles said Owens’ job will be a “hybrid” position that combines operations and administrative duties, along with some on-campus recruiting. He'll also oversee Nebraska’s outreach program, which involves players' community involvement.

“It’s a combination of everything,” Miles said.

Owens had previously spent three seasons as head coach at Lincoln Christian (Okla.) High School, where he was 48-27 and led the team to two state tournaments.

The elder Owens coached at Kansas from 1964-1983, and coached against Kansas State when Kruger played for the Wildcats from 1971-74.

Synchronicity strikes again as Jimmy finds a link to the Owens family. While his Dad was KU coach and I was in high school, my Pop and I had seats behind the KU bench at the old Big Seven Xmas tourney in KC. Big Ted was angry at a ref's call and kicked a folding chair right into my leg. My own Dad wanted to sue him, but he did turn around and apologize to us afterward. Maybe I should be allowed to kick a chair into young Ted as a long postponed payback.

I still remember in disbelief, Woody Mayfield waving off a last second shot by KU in Allen Field House and Tom Apke and the Colorado Buffs sprinting to the locker room after the upset.  Coach Owens was not a happy man!  This post is clearly showing my age!

I think that Fran is a great friend of this program.

He always seemed to like Doc, and has good things to say about Tim.

He has always said great things about this program when he writes about us or when he did the color for any of our games.

I kind of thought he might be our next coach when Doc was let go.

Sounds like Fran might have helped Owens get the job.

Why because someone said thank you to someone that said something nice about them?

No, because he said, "Thanks for all of your help!"

By the way, my comment was not meant to be derogatory.  If Fran helped him get the job, good for him.  There isn't anything wrong with that.  Many people ask others to help them find jobs.

Don't know how many on here will remember this but Frischilla was actually an assistant coach (or almost one anyway) at NU for about 10 days.  He was on Danny Nee's staff at Ohio and was coming with Danny but then got a better offer.  Can't remember for sure whether they gave him the head job at Ohio then or if it was something else.

When I heard that we hired Teddy Owens the first thing that popped into my mind was that his Dad never won a game in the Devaney Sports Center.  I was pretty sure that was true and I went back and checked and Ted was in fact 0-7 in his trips to Devaney as the head coach at Kansas.  He actually lost the last 8 times played against us in Lincoln and was just 6-19 in Lincoln during his tenure as the head coach at KU.  Of course I am sure he fared much better in the games in Lawrence but I did not add those up.

Maybe it is a good thing we are moving out of the BDSC before we have Ted(dy) Owens on our staff :)

Ted did have better luck at BDSC as a recruiter as I also recall him being at the HS state tournament  recruiting Ron Kellogg who signed with him at KU.  Not sure if Kellogg got there to play before Ted got fired - maybe he did for 1 year.

I think Fran was an assistant for a few days because I remember visiting with him and Bob Devaney at some sort of get together for Danny right after he came to town. Don't remember what I said to him, but I do remember telling Devaney that he had made a good hire (and I think I was, for the most part, correct).

The nostalgic part of me likes this hire.  I'm old enough to have attended some of those 7 games he coached here.  Unfortunately, I missed the half court shot by Bobby Moore to beat KU in '79,

Pretty sure you are right, HuskerBB, that Kellogg played for Ted Owens as a freshman.
