a top 150 recruit. http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/recruiting/player-Jacob-Hammond-132900

When was the last time we had an official top 150 recruit?

I like our chances of landing him. We only have 2 guys over 6'9, and both those guys would be juniors when jacob gets here.

Nebraska hasnt had one on Rivals in their entire historical database.

The Oklahoma offer bothers me.  They aren't a good team by any means, but they are very close to home for him.

Nobody bring up Agau or Matt Hill, either.  We aren't Louisville or Texas.

Edit- I didn't realize he decommitted from Oklahoma.  That changes my opinion for sure, but I'm not sure how much.

Also, he's a 4* on ESPN: http://espn.go.com/college-sports/basketball/recruiting/player/_/id/146294/jacob-hammond

Well, if we're getting a visit ...

That doesn't guarantee nothin' obviously, but it suggests we've made the final cut since a kid can only take 5 official visits.

And, let's be honest, when he sees PBA, he'll be blown away.

Would that be something, to get this kid, a Rivals top 150, and then get Leon Gilmore as well, another Rivals top 150.  That would be two in one year.  And two in 12 years (or as long as Rivals has had a database.)

Lets take this Hammond and then take Gilmore and Tory Miller. A center in Hammond, a bruising power forward type in Tory Miller, and then a long 6-7 wing in Leon Gilmore. Two top 150 guys plus Miller who is a fringe top150 guy. That would be sweet. That said, I would settle for just 1 of the 3. I think Miles can snag 2 of them though.

Repost of the video I posted back in May (reposted because it's on the earlier page and because I couldn't find any more recent video than 2012 highlights).

Keep in mind this video is from when Jacob was a sophomore.  He's probably developed a lot physically since the time he played in the games shown in the video, and he's probably continued to develop his skills as well.

There was a report from a AAU tournament this summer Robin retweeted where the basketball recruiting analyst watching Hammond said every time he got the ball he was dunking it. Can you imagine someone actually dunking the basketball on a consistent basis in the post? I didn't think that was possible watching NU recently.

OK, that got my attention.  He didn't make it into the Rivals top 150 for nothin'.  There must be something there that someone liked.  Remember, bigs take longer to develop.  And when someone posted upthread that Hammond wasn't a primary scoring option as a sophomore in HS ... well, that doesn't necessarily mean he'll always be a non-scoring option.  I'd say it's a good bet the kid has done some developing over the last couple of years.

Let's go land this kid.  Nuff said.

Well, I've seen him dunk in his videos, so that puts him on a higher "aggressiveness" scale than JBD right there.  He might not have the shooting touch of JBD but he appears to have better touch than Maric and more nads than JBD.  I'd say the comparison of him being somewhere between those two is pretty salient.  But both of those two could score in their own way and someone upthread said this kid really doesn't contribute a lot of points.  That would be one major difference.

if this kid could really grow another inch or two and add some more muscle....id probly switch some of my opinion on him, granted its already raised slightly given that oklahoma is going after him meaning the homestate school wants him, and one of the video's didnt look bad...but i still dont know....are we sure Sai dosnt wanna come here...did we call him a few times...maybe make him a mixtape?

If you look at the video of him as a sophomore -- and I think Kamdy can speak better to this than I can -- but it looks like the kid his pretty good muscle structure.  He's a kid, therefore, who can add muscle mass and wear it comfortably.  Might take a skinny kid like Surgej a couple of years to add the kind of weight this kid can probably add in a summer.  Hammon has good frame.  And he looks to be a legit 6'10".

I wonder why he hasn't received more offers. I did Google and Twitter searches and found these evaluations of him from this summer:

*Physical and bouncy rebounder was a double-double both times we watched and did it again in Top 60 game (we thought Top 30) with 12 points and a game high12 boards. He can finish with strength on post up or pop out and hit 16-footer on face up, but is at his best attacking hoop on blocks with his quick footwork. He beats other bigs down the court.

*He is a  physical and athletic big man that dominated around the rim on both ends while we watched. He can use his 240-pound frame to seal off bigs and then explode with dunk on putback. he has facing skills, hit elbow jumper and blew by bigs to the rim, then finished versus contact.

*After starting his career as a lanky forward, Hammond has added weight and power to his game and is now a bruising center. The Duncan native likes being physical around the rim and surprisingly has emerged as a vocal leader.  While he has gotten tougher around the rim, he’s also gotten smarter and is less prone to leave his feet when protecting the rim. Even from April, Hammond showed a big improvement in his touch and confidence around the rim, while even displaying the potential to be a consistent shooter from midrange. Rivals.com has the Magic Center as the 139th ranked player in the nation and he backed it up by dominating around the paint against the Oklahoma Wizards Elite and the Oklahoma Storm, two squads with good size.

*Oklahoma Magic 2014 Jacob Hammond is a big man that embrace being a big. #rare

*Oklahoma Magic big man Jacob Hammond is extremely active, swatting everything in this one and moves well w/o ball.

New article up on HOL from Robin about him.

Says he is looking forward to the visit and we are up there on his list.  Thinks decommitting was a good decision.

Said UCLA isn't really one of his top schools because he thinks other schools want him more.  Said he wants to go to a school where he is going to go and start playing right away.

"They actually said during their recruiting that I'm at the top of their list because, like you said, they need a big right now," Hammond said. "I feel like I could come in and definitely help them out if I decide to come there. They've definitely talked to me about how much a big would mean to them."

Posted

He's also said that he wants to commit before his senior season.  That's good for us, since we've already got him on an official visit and he'll likely sign during the early signing period.

While I agree its obviously a good sign that he's coming for an official, I fail to see any advantage to the fact that he wants to commit before his senior season. Maybe you're confusing the start of the school year with the start of his senior basketball season? He's also stated that he plans on taking all 5 of his officials before coming to a decision although I hope his visit here changes that thinking. With the early signing period running November 13-20 this year and his senior season starting sometime around that time, he has 3+ months to get all those visits in.

My logic is that at the most we're likely competing against 4 other schools (his other visits that are yet to be scheduled),and he only has a few commitable offers at this point.  Hammond seems like the type of player that could see his recruiting blowup in the spring, since decent big men carry a premium in the late signing period.  Could easily be a blueblood's plan C.  But if he wants to sign in November, we don't have to worry about that.  I'd rather compete with St Louis and Oklahoma today, rather than Kansas and Arizona tomorrow.

Ok good points. Hadn't thought spring signing, big men at a premium, etc. He seems like a kid that learned his lesson from his early Oklahoma commitment and is truly trying to find the best fit for him. Some kids who say that they're going to be a early signer and then start to gain attention from 'bigger' schools might love the attention and then choose to drag their recruitment out to the spring. They become the C and D option for these bigger schools, they think they're getting more opportunities when in reality their options are decreasing. The early signers may have taken spots they were in the running for at other schools and chances of finding 'a good fit' for them go down.

Does Hammond have a UCLA offer or was there just interest by the Bruins? Visiting there twice and telling them no, eliminating them already tells me this kid has things straightened out. Now, he could tell us the same thing come next week, I doubt it happens, but it could happen. Remember, he's looking for a good fit.
