My wife and I went down to the Haymarket with friends Saturday night, and my friend is all worried that we are building "too fast".  I almost fell out of my chair.  He kept saying were is everybody going to park?  I said that there is like 3 parking garages going in.  It was really unbelieveable.

I was down again last night and I am so happy to see all the work going on.  They were still working at some places at 9:00 last night.  These people really want their places ready for that first tip off or concert.

Parking sucks right now, but once all the parking garages are finished it will be much better.

Am so ready for this I can hardly stand it.

There will be plenty of places to park with the garages--it's just that there are no  roads to get the vehicles in and out of them quickly.   Not unlike Haymarket Park--single lane roads in and out.  For those who get annoyed at people leaving early at the Bob, brace yourselves.  Since I drink early and often and no longer have young kids, i'll stay until the end, go to a watering hole until traffic clears, and then head home.  But for some folks, they will do whatever it takes to beat the traffic, no matter what is going on in the game.

The words "parking garages" and "better" should never be used in the same sentence.

Parking garages are fine for daily transient traffic that comes and goes at different times.  But for events, like concerts and sporting events, they are a deathtrap.  One could easily get stuck in a parking garage for a solid 30-45 minutes before getting out.  That is not my idea of "better" in any way, shape or form.

I am thrilled about the new arena and look forward to this new era of NU BB at Pinnable Bank Arena.  But I have never bought into the notion that this arena, which is essentially landlocked in the Haymarket, will improve the parking situation.  Fans at Pinnacle Bank Arena will either have to walk a decent distance (most of them directly into a bitter north wind across the pedestrian bridge and then, once they get to their cars, battle all the traffic to get out on to west O street using the one and only exit road available) or park in a garage and wait out the long, slow lines to get out.

You missed the option which we now have in the Haymarket, vs. Devaney:  Walk across the street and have a cold one or 2 vs. just waiting in a line of cars burning expensive fuel....

HB nailed it. Parking/leaving is going to suck for most any major sporting event...it's the nature of the beast. The Haymarket not only gives you a chance to walk somewhere else afterwards but also means there will also be less people immediately leaving.

I may start the trend of leaving early so that I can get my post game beer order before there is a big rush.

;)

Order one for me, too, while you're there.  I'll be along shortly, just after the game ends.  :)

OK, Chet, I stand corrected.

I didn't do the measurements so I didn't know how much distance the seating extended beyond the baselines but I knew if it was going to fit hockey, then it would have to push the end seating way back like they did at the Qwest Link Center-y.

Boy, was I wrong.

Job well done by the designers.  I bow in your presence.  (If I had a bow emot thingy, that is.)

Lincoln city planners...you astound me! Great foresight for your children's children's children!

Don't know if this is sarcasm or serious but I think Lincoln's city planners FINALLY did something right.

They effed up 33rd street at south.  They effed up 27th by the country club and effed up 40th at the cemetary on O.

They effed up all the east-west roads except for maybe O Street.

You almost can't drive straight through Lincoln from one side of town to the other -- north to south or east to west -- without having to take some detour or get caught in some bottle neck.

But, by gawd, they did the arena and surrounding area pretty well and it's going to be special.

Now, they just need to widen the hell out of Sun Valley Blvd.  And build another bridge over salt creek leaving Haymarket Park parking lots.

I would credit WRK Real Estate more than anything with the area around the arena, they did a great job.

I'm not saying that I think it's going to be a perfect situation with the parking, but I don't think it will be as bad as everyone envisions either. A couple of you have pointed out the things working in our favor vs what we used to have at Devaney. In the coming seasons there will be plenty of fans meeting for dinner/drinks both before and after games. People meeting up and hanging out is a huge plus as it spreads out the arrival and departure times of everyone into and out of the area. Having things to do down there will also encourage more carpooling, I believe. People will pick each other up and then go down to dinner. At Devaney you had 90% of the cars trying to arrive within 20 minutes of tipoff and then the second the game ended you had 90% of people sprinting to their cars and trying to speed home as fast as they could. The other 10% of the cars belonged to the folks who had bailed at the under 8 or under 4 timeouts.

Does anyone know numbers? Like how many cars each parking option is supposed to hold? Seems like the Journal Star should do something on this or maybe they have, I don't know. There's gonna be plenty of options. Haymarket, I assume is going to be run by the university. City parking in those garages they're building. The garages already down there. The festival lot. I guess that would be run by the arena. And then University parking for Rebounders Club people like they've had in assigned lots around Devaney. I think they're using the tailgate football lots under the viaduct, a couple lots back there and then deck one of an existing Haymarket garage.

I'll defer opinion until we see how the parking goes. I went down to the Oven last night and spent 30 minutes driving around the Haymarket looking for a parking place. Made me want to apply for that handicapped sticker I deserve from not lacing up my basketball shoes all the way to the top. It wasn't even a particularly busy night, although there is all that last minute frantic construction going on and there was some sort of motorcycle event blocking one street. i can forsee pandemonium when the inevitable snow and icy winds accompany the basketball season. But I may be just a half empty glass guy when it comes to the arena, so we'll see how it goes.

Just asking, why did you just not park in the Haymarket parking garage?

I will say, I will miss the secret parking spots that i had in past years.  It took me several years to find those.  Now i have to start over.  I haven't paid for parking in about a decade for NU hoops...
