A Grimm Fairytale

I got a kick out of this last week. Mike Grimm (Radio Voice of the Gophers) was on KFAN discussing the future of Williams Arena. He & the host went around the Conference highlighting the Pros & Cons of each Venue. When they got around to UNL Mike said this, “Nebraska’s had a historically awful Basketball Program & their New Arena has done absolutely NOTHING to change that narrative.” Let’s set aside our Attendance Marks & Top 4 finishes & focus on a couple things Mike’s overlooked. Kevin McHale & Dave Winfield played a LONG time ago, Goldy has exactly 1 winning Conference record in the last twenty years & has NEVER Won at the PBA. Let’s hope the Crowd reminds Mr. Grimm of that fact on Saturday afternoon…!

Equal on NCAA appearances since 2013

2 = 2 NIT bids

Minnesota had an NIT championship in 2013

3 NU > 1 Top 5 finishes in conference

 

Wow. If Nebraska is irrelevant, I can't imagine how Minnesota must feel!

So the argument is even if they get a new arena they'll still be bad?  I guess we have to beat Minnesota and start changing our narrative.  Hopeful the crowd is just as good as last night on Saturday.

Grimm was touting what a new arena might do for the Gopher program. Thus, Grimm was giving us giving us a backhanded compliment there saying that since we've gotten the arena we've been good, relatively. To be fair, he probably had to do this because Minnesota fans would balk at Nebraska being good in the first place.

Justin Gaard, the other gentleman on the broadcast is a LONG time Tim Miles Fan & used to openly root for us during that Era.

I have to say this every time I hear it, because it drives me nuts. 

 

Has our program been elite? No. Is it a great program? No. But to say it's just been this historically miserable thing is so wrong. We just haven't won a tourney game, that's what makes it seem so bad. But we have a very rich history, and I'm tired of hearing that we don't.

And Least we forget, the Viking were the LAST NFL Champions before the Leagues merged as Joe Kapp lost in Super Bowl 4 to the Chiefs. It’s this type of Reality based Hope that has me feeling optimistic about the Huskers running the Table & Winning that B1G Tournament as Brice goes on a “Heater”

A long time ago, I stopped talking about Brice Williams being a great freethrow shooter whenever he'd step to the line. Invariably, it seemed to jinx it. I blame myself.
