100% it wil happen, and probably will be increasingly problematic.  This was always going to be a byproduct of this wild west of unregulated pay for play.  It will get worse before the market sorts itself out too I think.

There will be a lot of money wasted on trying to convince kids to play for certain schools just to have those kids sketch out like Sluka or for them to not pan out.  I guess it doesn't bother me all that much.  If rich dudes think it's a good idea to piss all their money away on 18-22 year old boys then who am I to judge?

I completely agree. I wanted to say it's more detrimental in bball than football (which I still believe), but man, losing a QB is tough.

People here probably don't remember what the Chinese tried to do in world soccer 10-15 years ago, but essentially, they were embarking on a plan to have the world's #1 most popular soccer league.  They did this by promising all of the most elite players in Europe insane amounts of money to sign on to play in the Chinese league.  They signed many many huge stars away from England, France, Italy, Spain and Germany.  There was a lot of hand-wringing about all of this at the time but two things happened.  First, it didn't take too long for everyone to completely forget about those so-called elite players after they left and new stars on the European clubs emerged to replace them.  Second, it turns out China was writing checks that they couldn't cover, and those players who left for China were now stuck in a foreign land where they didn't speak the language or know anybody, and they were not getting paid to boot.  It ended up hurting the players more than anything.  (FWIW, the Saudis are attempting to do the same thing now and are still facing the same issues, but at least their $$$ has been good at least so far, but probably the lessons learned from the China fiasco has made it much more difficult for them to lure big names away from Europe).

Which is all a long way to say that absolutely nobody is irreplaceable.  The NIL insanity will probably calm down some - either by BMD's going broke trying to win championships for their favorite teams, or by sanity eventually coming in and the process becoming at least a little more regulated - and in the end, we will carry on rooting for our teams because as college sports fans, it's really only the name on the front of the shirt that matters.

Yeah, I kinda feel a little bad for the UNLV fans because this will likely derail what could have become a special season for them.  But they will continue on and there will be some solace for them when they see this starting to happen to other programs around the country.  This event is really probably only the first of many just like it to come.

The problem with this poll is that you can't redshirt mid-season for basketball to preserve your eligibility

Only medical redshirts are available. Cookie Belcher did that at Nebraska under Nee's leadership during the 1999-2000 season.

It probably will happen. Also, if Sluka was really shorted $100,000 and UNLV’s stance is to try make him and his family look like the ones being ridiculous, they won’t have to worry about paying anyone $100,000 in the future. No one worth that much will trust them.

Yeah. But it's on the horizon. Will it make it this season? Probably not, but it is still a possibility from what I understand. But I could totally be wrong.

Some good perspective here:

"There's a chance you're not going to get the amount that you signed for," Hsu says. "That's a real possibility. Those last three months after Christmas? Whew. I know multiple kids last year that went to Big 12, Big Ten schools that still haven't gotten paid because the collective ran out of money."
