Outside of injuries happening and possibly Michigan st. slipping in there I really feel that is the top 5 in conference:

Id go

1.  Purdue

2.  Illinois(will Shannon play again??)

3.  Ohio St.

4. Wisconsin(ask me again after saturday..)

5.  Nebraska

We're about 40% of the way through the season and we can see some things more clearly now:

1. We're not as good of a perimeter shooting team as I might have expected. So far. A handful of our more volume shooters are not performing quite as well as I would have expected, but I think it's taken them until about now to get some things figured out, so this could improve.

2. We can score in the paint with Mast, but we lack that guard/wing who can penetrate and finish at the rim.

3. We're a pretty decent rebounding team. Best rebounding team in the Hoiberg era for sure.

4. So far -- and I sure don't want to jinx it, but -- we are a darn good freethrow shooting team.

5. We're developing a defensive identity and guys seem to know and step up to their roles. Defensive scheme that plays to our strengths and doesn't leave guys on islands, which is probably important because we don't possess a lot of lateral quicks.

6. Fronting the post and sending the double team is kind of exposing us to backside screens preventing us from closing out on the skip pass to the weakside corner.

7. Say what you want, but I think we're going to be a tough out because Mast is capable of posting up and scoring over even a guy like Ware AND we currently have SIX PLAYERS shooting 34% or better from beyond the arc. And Mast isn't one of them, but could be. And Jamarques, who started 5 for 25 (20%) through the Creighton game has been 8 for 22 (36.3%) since then.

*Trigger warning: Discussion of *next year* follows.*

I want to enjoy this season for sure, but being who I am, I cannot help but think about next season at least a little bit.

We need everyone in the rotation with remaining eligibility to return. And, if they do ...

  • Mast is a freaking stud. Can score inside, lefty or righty hooks, passes well from the high post. Leading the team in assists and averaging NEARLY a double-double.
  • Gary is a freaking stud. Team leader in beast-mode, can guard virtually anyone, and wipes the glass.
  • Brice is long and athletic, plays good defense, very good perimeter shooter, elite from the line.
  • CJ is finally confident in his shot again (and his role on the team), needs only a little space to get his shot off, and is hitting 40% from three.
  • Jamarques is really fast pushing the ball in transition, one of our better one-on-one defenders, and looks like he's limited his sophomore slump to about the first 8 games.
  • Sam makes more hustle plays than anyone I can remember for a looong time and anticipates so well. And also a really solid shooter.
  • Eli is long, strong, and still learning. Unconscious from deep, hitting over 38% from three right now.

We're adding two really solid lefty shooting guards next year. AND a guy with Big Ten starting experience at PG will probably be eligible next season. We currently have one scholarship open but, without naming names, I'm guessing there'll be maybe one or two more.

So, I'd really like to see us hit the portal and find ...

  • a bouncy, long, and reasonably skilled big man to replace Allick
  • A guard/wing who can penetrate and finish (also plays good D and at least competent from deep)
  • An unselfish distributor who plays good D and who's capable enough at scoring that he can't be ignored (maybe Ulis is that guy?)

BONUS if they have at least 2 years of eligibility.

We only lose one impact senior off this crew, so, I mean, NEXT YEAR ... 👀

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to suggest Fred might go on a “Nee Like” Tournament Run of 4 in a Row, or 5 out of 6 years. Happy Days Are Here Again…!

Debbie Downer's Cousin Candy Cautious here,

Remember we're now going to start drawing more attention and better shots from the rest of the league who probably, like a lot of us, after the Minnehaha game wrote us off for the year. We're going to start getting teams best punches from here on out.

This conference is like 2 months of Mad Max Beyond Basketdome.

I, for one, want to stay in the upper half. I like the air better there.

Watch this, not for what they say about Indiana, but for what they say about Nebraska:

I want to love that outsiders are seeing how our season is going and taking us seriously as a team and as a program. But I also have to take Jeff Goodman’s view on Indiana into account since I don’t know him well enough to have already established an opinion about him.

He spends a lot of time lamenting Indiana’s lack of shooters after a game that saw them hit half their three point shots. Meanwhile, their two best players, who are bigs, had nine turnovers.

I can’t put too much stock into his assessment.

RC however seemed more objective and he seemed almost scared by the realization that we may be waking up as a program and becoming a top half of the league team. I can buy stock in that.

If, two years ago, we'd been who we are today, maybe we land this guy. And if we'd landed this guy two years ago, think who we'd be now. And given that who we were last year put us in position to get the guys we got who are helping make us who we are this year, maybe getting a guy like this at the end of this year is more plausible. IIRC, he actually came for a visit. We were a contender.
