Yep, agreed. Kinda got a log-jam at the 2-3 position. Wasn't necessarily in love with the Ulis pick-up but I didn't worry about where he fit in offensively (as far as taking things away from others), was more happy about adding a defender who didn't necessarily need the ball. This guy definitely "needs" the ball. He's very skilled offensively.

Coleman is a very nice pick up, especially this late in the off-season.   He certainly has the potential to be even better than Ulis.

I don't see the log jam at 2-3.  Coleman, Keisei and Lawrence are all 1-2, not 3s.  None of them are natural PGs, but they are closer to PGs than SF.  Most likely, Coleman will be the starting PG (assuming Ulis is ineligible).  Keisei and Lawrence will play the 2, and Lawrence will probably be the backup PG. So this means we have 3 primary players for those two spots, so not a log jam there.

I'm curious who you think are 3s.  IMO, the only experienced 3s on the team are CJ and Williams.  Eli is probably a natural 3, but he is a true freshman.  Ramel could play the 3, but considering his alleged shooting struggles, he probably will be battling for some minutes at the PG/SG spot, if any.

Regarding who "needs the ball", I hope that Coleman doesn't need the ball to shoot a lot.  Overall, he is an inefficient shooter at just 37% overall FG%.  He is a decent 3 point shooter, but only shot 30% when playing at Missouri in power 5 conference.  He scored a lot at Ball State, but, well, that was Ball State.  So I would hope that he will be more of a facilitator at NU with some timely spot up 3s or drives.  No more off-the-dribbles 2 pt jump shots.

Thing I like most about Coleman is his size.  If he can play PG at 6'5", he could guard opposing team 2 or 3, allowing him to play with both Keisei and Lawrence at same time if the situation calls for it.  This probably wouldn't be possible if Ulis was PG.  This would be especially important if either CJ or Williams should get injured for any period of time.  It just adds more versatility.

The key here, and I assumed we discussed it with him, is that he is coming in to play point guard.  He took a lot of silly shots for Ball St.  Shots we don't need or want.  He has the handles and vision to play point guard it looks like.  It isn't bad to have a point guard that can score, but we need him to facilitate our unique offense and save the poor shots for end of clock situations where he is very capable at finding himself a shot.  I liked how his assists were way up near the end of the season.

I like the Palmer comparison but see even more Shavon Shields in him (from the little bit of YouTube I’ve watched). Seems solid but where he can be really valuable is at the end of the shot clock or in situations where we just need to find a way to get a bucket.

100%. His size, ball handling and passing are perfect for our needs. But he is a poor shooter and very inefficient inside the arc. He was much more efficient as an underclassmen when he was a lower usage/lower volume guard. Hopefully he embraces the role as a pass first point guard.

It appears to be an outlier compared to his other seasons but his conversion rate at the rim (51.6%) was approaching the Trey McGowens zone. (~47.5% over two year here)

Take away the missed dunks when Trey was trying to impersonate Darrell Griffith and that average gets better...

I'd give a lot more credit to us likely having a starting job up for grabs and the apparent prior relationship with Howard.

you think a kid is entering the portal this late for any other reason than money? lol

So you’ve named 7 people for 2-3 spots. 7 people who all think they should be playing and probably could, hence why it’s a bit of a logjam. Not to mention Gary could probably play a 3 in certain line-ups (he could? Idk), and you haven’t mentioned guys like Sam or Cale, one who you know will play and a second who’s gotten a lot of tic this summer and done well with it.

Never said it wasn’t a big pick up. I’m ecstatic about it - just am acknowledging and agreeing with the concerns of the poster I originally quoted.

Does he need the ball though?  I think at Ball St last season they probably needed him to dominate the ball but if you look at his previous season in Missouri he didn't dominate touches (no one did).  No idea what he will do here but at least as the track record of being a 'share the ball guy on a Power 4 team'

No idea if he does or not - but he did leave Missouri and go back to where he got a lot of touches, so you tell me?

This is an incredible pick-up and I’m jacked about it. Maybe I need to keep clarifying that. My new “Cross could be serviceable by his junior or senior year.”

He entered this late because he needed a summer class to graduate.

Sure NIL matters but all high end D-1 schools have NIL money so it matters in the same way that a shiny practice facility matters that you need to keep up.  At the end of the day it's all about relationship with coaches and perceived opportunities.

We had way too much of that in general in Hoiberg's first three years. Having lead guards with these tendencies is not conducive to success. A lot of it just comes down to decision making and picking your spots.

He left because Cuanzo Martin got fired and most of the entire team transferred from Mizzou.

Sounds like he shoulda stayed at got more touches.

This is a pretty good explainer and also touches on his struggles running the point in Columbia  https://www.rockmnation.com/missouri-tigers-basketball/2022/4/22/23037163/mizzou-guard-jarron-coleman-boogie-enters-the-transfer-portal

Have to hope that our offense where it works better when the PG isn't dominating the ball and often ended with a PG taking a catch-and-shoot 3 works out here.

The year he played for Missouri, Missouri won 12 games and finished 3 spots higher than us in Kenpom at #137. So, he was an 8.6 ppg player on a bad Mizzou team. His numbers that year would have been pretty comparable on our team to CJ's numbers the same season, which would have been CJ's first year with us. In fairness, he did lead Mizzou in assists that  season with  2.8 per game.
