Experienced a coaching change at Pitt, didn't mesh with Capel apparently. Then transferred to Nevada and walked into another coaching change.

 

Fact our coach has a 7-year deal with big penalty if he leaves while Shamiel is still in college might be a big inducement.

 

Good numbers as a freshman at Pitt. 6-6 and 235# might fit Hoiberg's vision of a stretch 4.

Looking at his sophomore numbers compared to freshman numbers, I can sure see why he decided to leave Pitt. Capel playing him 1/3 of the minutes he was getting as a freshman under Stallings.  Apparently drew a lot of fouls as well.

Guard?  That’s a tank.  Byron Houston-esque if those are accurate.  I think Byron was closer to 6’4” at the combine back in the day.

I've seen him listed as a SF. He's built stout. I could see him playing PF in a Hoiberg system. Shoots over 37.5% from 3.

Based on his sophomore numbers, he is a dead-eye three point shooter.  Perfect for our system.

If he has guard handles in that body Fred could use him a bit like Royce White.  In a position less system an athlete like this is really helpful for creating mismatches.

I did look at that.  It's no wonder he was pissed.  Blowout games and he's getting a handful of minutes.  I would have transferred too.

My understanding is he and Capel didn't see eye to eye.  He was a part-time starter as a freshman under Stallings.  Showed a lot of promise. And then Capel just didn't play him.

After appearing in all 32 games last season and averaging 8.5 points (second among returning players) and 4.4 rebounds (first) per game, Stevenson has played just 21 minutes in 10 games and hasn’t appeared in any of the team’s past six games, confounding some who follow the program from a distance.

Toney has clearly replaced him as the taller wing who plays what amounts to the four, and rather than inserting Stevenson as the backup, Capel has instead opted for lineups in which Malik Ellison or Jared Wilson-Frame is the second-tallest player. While not singling anyone out, Capel said he needs players to play with energy every day when asked in November about Stevenson’s lack of minutes. Questions about his work ethic arose before the season, and his lack of playing time has only added credence to those murmurs (for what it’s worth, at 245 pounds, he is listed as 15 pounds heavier on this season’s roster than he was on last season’s). A player who once seemed like a building block has rather quickly become an afterthought.

An interesting comparison of measurables:

Stevenson - 6'6"  245 with a 6'11" wingspan

Heiman - 6'11"  215 with a 6'9.25" wingspan (measurement taken during his senior year of high school)

 

Not bashing Brady, I think he'll be a contributor wherever he ends up. But it's rare to see a basketball player with a wingspan that's shorter than their height.

That extra weight looks a lot different on him than it did on McCray though...
