bigred4 Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 from Tim in the LJS yesterday. "The only other players on Nebraska’s roster are two transfers sitting out per NCAA rules and guard Deverell Biggs, who’s redshirting but would be suspended, anyway, Miles said, because of his recent citation for driving under the influence." By my count that would be a minimum of a 6 game suspension since his DUI was before the UTEP game (UTEP, Nicholls, OSU, Wisc, Mich, and if he would still be suspended Mich St.) I would think now he will have to serve that at the start of next year, so he will miss the home opener (probably vs a BCS team) and the Charleston Classic and a few more games. That will hurt because I think he will probably start next year and now we will miss him for quite a few big games to start the year next year. I agree with the suspension and hopefully that will send a message to players in the future. Quote
HB Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 There will be a suspension for sure, and a dismissal if there are more incidents or if Deverell doesn't respond well to this incident. I believe he is handling his business well so far, but there is a long way to next season. I hope he makes it through his suspension, however many games it ends up being, and learns from it all--like many of us from our mistakes. Quote
uneblinstu Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 I don't know that I'd make that assumption. I wouldn't be shocked if he's serving some sort of punishment rather than defer it 10 months. Quote
hhcdave Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 I would be very surprised if he misses any game time next season. I'd think that he is currently undergoing suspension and discipline right now, and its being handled internally. I don't see how you can make somebody wait almost a full year after they're already no doubt facing discipline. I think the article was just stating that even if he were playing right now, he wouldn't be eligible. I highly doubt that comes into fruition next fall for any sort of game suspension (based on this incident alone) but then again, I'm just speculating like everybody else, too. Quote
Huskerpapa Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 HB, was this a topic of discussion at the recent Big Red event? Quote
cipsucks Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 HB, was this a topic of discussion at the recent Big Red event? If the coaching staff was involved in the discussion, I'd be both surprised and disappointed. Quote
bigred4 Posted January 13, 2013 Author Report Posted January 13, 2013 I thought Tim has said in the past he was still practicing (not 100% certain). I'm sure he has had to deal with some discipline already. But, running extra or being suspended from practice is not the same as missing real games. I don't know how you could justify not suspending him next year, when if he wasn't redshirting this year ( which was voluntary) he would have been suspended a minimum of 6 games. I'm would be surprised if he misses 6 games, but doing nothing next year I believe would send the wrong message. Having said that, I hope he has learned his lesson because he has a bright future ahead and he was still heavily involved with cheering the team on vs. Wisconsin Quote
cozrulz Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 Game at most next season but any discipline should be happening now. Quote
Huskerpapa Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 HB, was this a topic of discussion at the recent Big Red event? If the coaching staff was involved in the discussion, I'd be both surprised and disappointed. Cip, side conversations with various people take place during events such as this. I have heard something similar to what HB said from two other individuals. I am not sure where HB got his information, so I am simply asking if this may have been where he heard the same thing. So I would not be either surprised or disappointed. I am also not sure whether this becomes a coaches decision, an athletic department decision or what. We have not had many if any DUI situations involving the basketball team. We had a pretty bad incident with a volleyball player a year or two ago, and have a few instances involving the football and baseball teams. I cannot recall game suspensions for the football players, but I may be wrong. I believe "the volleyball" player was suspended for a couple games. Not sure on the other teams...so I was just asking. HB Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 I don't know that I'd make that assumption. I wouldn't be shocked if he's serving some sort of punishment rather than defer it 10 months. It's not an assumption or just my opinion, or I would have stated it as such. It's more like a direct quote of someone close to the program (i.e. the head coach): "Deverell will either get a suspension or a dismissal, depending on how he handles things. It won't be neither, and it won't be both". Tim Miles, Big Red Hoops Event during the Q & A public part of the event, microphone in hand--not a private conversation, or I certainly wouldn't mention it on here. Brian Rosenthal was in the audience, so I can't imagine it was something that was supposed to be "left at the event". Cip, I don't know the basis for your "disappointment" if coaches were discussing the punishment Biggs might face. But having been in attendence, I just thought it was a direct answer to a direct question. By the main spokesperson for the program; the guy in charge. Certainly it wasn't "speaking out of school"--there is no question Deverell knows exactly where he stands and what is expected of him. Miles talked generally about his evolution over 17 years as a head coach in dealing with disciplinary situations. He was also respectful of Deverell and indicated he had done everything right so far after the event. I find nothing wrong with the explanation, and nothing wrong with his course of action. I realize second guessing everything a coach does is a big part of what a message board is, but the posters above already taking issue with the timing and degree of a suspension most likely have no experience dealing with such things, don't know all the facts of the incident, and don't have to run a basketball program in a University setting. hhcmatt and Norm Peterson 2 Quote

There have been game suspensions in football for DUIs and other criminal offenses. Baseball also. Note, the criminal charges with Biggs have not been resolved yet, and neither is the extent of any consequences for athletic participation. But he has been charged with multiple offenses. Quote
cipsucks Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 Okay, since I'm now on the defensive side of the discussion, the original poster said by his count, Biggs would serve a minimum of a 6 game suspension. HB, you then chimed in that you hoped he made it through his suspension, however many games that ends up being. cwg then asked if you heard what you posted at the recent Big Red event. I then said I'd be surprised and disappointed if that conversation happened at that gathering. The fault in this misunderstanding lies with me. I didn't clearly read HB's original post. I thought he was talking specifics. He wasn't. Quote
AuroranHusker Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 On another note in relation to the two other players who are redshirting after transfers,.Petteway & Pitchford: it would be great if those two were available right now with injuries to big Ubel & minuteman Peltz. NU could certainly use a big guy like Walter Pitchford to complement the great ship Almeida & a wing-man that seems to be pretty talented in Terran Petteway. I guess we'll all have to wait & see the 2 P's and Biggs in the new arena along with the 3 rookies. Norm Peterson 1 Quote

AuroranHusker Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 I like the notion of Killer P's as well! I'd add a few things I want to see more of with Miles' squad: Put the ball on the floor, pull up for a J, push for a rebound, plant your bigs in the lane, pound the ball to the post, posterize the opponent, plan to win~~ Next year the killer P's, Parker Peltz Petteway Pitchford will all be playing in the Pinnacle Bank Arena. HuskerFever Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 And then Piatkowski surprises us and says he's joining the coaching staff. One could hope. Quote
Norm Peterson Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 Holy halleluja! AuroranHusker LIVES!!! How ya doin' buddy? Long time! I'm sure I speak for many, but sooo glad you returned. Figured you must have either departed this vale of tears or joined the Peace Corps or the Hari Krishnas. Or been deployed to Afghanistan. Or ... whatever. It doesn't matter. Just glad to see you back. Damn straight. Daledangdarn 1 Quote
Norm Peterson Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 Am I seriously the ONLY guy on the board who listens to Sports Nightly? I must be. This is not news what Miles plans to do. And it hasn't been hush hush either. Miles has spoken openly and publicly about it. Before the recent gathering, I heard Miles talk about it on the aforementioned Sports Nightly where he said basically what HB described: Biggs is going to get punished; either a dismissal or a suspension; if it's a suspension, it won't be until next season; and it all depends on how Biggs responds. If Biggs gets suspended, it would make no sense to suspend him from games in which he wouldn't be playing anyway because of his redshirt. That would be pointless. In order for a suspension to be a real suspension, it would have to occur NEXT season because those would be the first games Biggs would otherwise be eligible to play in. Daledangdarn 1 Quote
jimmykc Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 If my reasoning is correct, in the USA one is assumed to be innocent until he has gone to court and actually been convicted of the charge for which he was arrested. I believe the case comes to trial and a judge then makes a decision and presumably gives a punishment for the crime if the person is found to be guilty. This takes a while. It would seem to be a bit early for the athletic team to already be punishing a player prior to the legal process taking place, but perhaps this is the normal proocedure. Maybe some of the lawyers on the board could render an opinion (pro bono, of course). Quote
cipsucks Posted January 13, 2013 Report Posted January 13, 2013 There are lawyers posting on this board? Yeah, right. Next thing you'll try to tell me is there are doctors here, too......geesh. Quote
