- I was impressed with the energy they played with tonight. It would have been easy to pack it in, they didn't.

- I was equally impressed with the fans. They filled the building, and were active for much of the game. For where this team is this year, that's pretty remarkable.

- Shields had a great game. Really, really good, but did leave several points at the rim.

- Heard Petteway's whole family was at the game. Gotta wonder if that's a decent statement of what direction he's leaning. Guy's gonna graduate, will be 23 and really doesn't have much left to prove at college. Even if he gets drafted late or not at all, it might be time for him to start collecting a paycheck as a professional, even if it's not at the NBA. I'd love to see what a Petteway, Shields, White offense could do, though.

- Just a hunch, I think Tai's gonna have a big year.

- I think the Huskers will play hard on Wednesday. We'll see if they play well.

- They tried to use the formula they used last year, largely, by getting to the line, but couldn't convert.

- 2-18 from 3. yeesh...

- I think they missed 5 shots at the rim. Probably the difference in the game.

- Big thanks to David, Leslee, Moses, Kye and Trevor. Not the most prolific class, but were a part of a pretty special part of Nebraska Hoops history. Good luck, men.

-David Rivers is going to remember this game for all the wrong reasons, unfortunately.

-Welcome back, Shavon. Hope to see you on Wednesday.

-Tai got called for a foul where I'm not sure there was anything wrong, if your guy runs into you, I mean, you're allowed to have contact...thing is, Tai didn't appear to touch him with his hands, arms, or much else for that matter.

-Weird, seemingly quick technicals called on both benches/coaches.

-Did Melo flop to draw at least two "fouls"?  Particularly the 2nd and 3rd ones called on his defender?

-14 missed free throws. That's all you can say...

-Rough way to finish but played well for the most part.

Crushed by the outcome...crushed.  Last year at this point I had tears of joy...sooo, I am bummed.

- I wanted to start out by mentioning Tai.  The dude played hard and smart tonight.

- It is a bummer that Benny is sooo offensive challenged.  His defense tonight was fun to watch.

- Five missed lay ups...yuck.

- So many missed free throws down the stretch...yuck

- We rebounded pretty well.

- We defended well

- We were much more organized on offense.  Decent spacing.

- That said, we missed a lot of shots.

- Hate that the seniors had this type of season...but there is always the Big Ten tournament.

Notes and quotes from Huskers.com

Nebraska
*-Nebraska averaged a school-record 15,568 fans per game at Pinnacle Bank Arena this season. It broke the previous mark of 15,419 set last season.
*-Shavon Shields had 26 points, his second-highest total of the season. It marked his eighth 20-point effort of the season and 13th of his career. Shields also matched his career high with four steals.
*-Shields with six rebounds today, became the 14th Husker to have 1000 career points and 500 career rebounds.
*-Nebraska falls to 0-4 against ranked teams this season, as both games with Maryland were decided by a total of seven points.
*-Terran Petteway posted his third double-double of the season – and fifth of his career - with 19 points and 10 rebounds
*-Nebraska’s 37 free throw attempts matched a season high (also vs. Michigan State).

Nebraska Coach Tim Miles
On why Huskers play Maryland well
“It’s a good matchup. I thought we defended them well both times. They were in the sixties both times. I know we play hard both times against them. Tonight, we didn’t make enough layups and we didn’t make enough free throws.”

On success of getting to the line today
“We’re making enough field goals. We’re not really turning the ball over, but we’re not making threes and not getting to the foul line. Something’s got to give and finally, tonight we get to the foul line, but we just don’t convert. You aren’t going to win games if you don’t convert at the foul line.”

On players mindset after the game
“It was a devastated locker room. I just told them to leave it all on the floor when we go to Chicago. Just play your butts off and let destiny lay where it is. If we end up losing whatever in a row we do out, big deal. Just play your butts off. That’s what we did today. We gave ourselves a chance, we just didn’t execute enough to win.”

On the team’s confidence late in the game
“You could see the angst when we were missing the free throws. So I was hoping we would just end up with a shot. I think there was some angst at the free throw line late. The guys were pressing a little bit. You could see their body language and their remarks. I think they thought we were going to get a chance to win the whole way through.”

Nebraska Forward Shavon Shields
On if he was supposed to shoot out of the last timeout
“No. They played it differently than we expected. I ran to the open spot, Terran (Petteway) found me and I missed the shot.”

On if Penn State losing added to the motivation
“Winning today is the motivation.”

Nebraska Forward Terran Petteway
On if Nebraska matched-up well and feel like we are a tough draw for Maryland
“We feel like we do, but we still lost. A loss is a loss.”

On missing free throws
“We were making them at first, but then they just dropped. Down the stretch, we just couldn’t knock them down. I missed two down the stretch that kind of hurt us.”

On if it was their defense or just missing open shots
“We were just missing open shots.”

Maryland Head Coach Mark Turgeon
Opening Statement
"Obviously, I am really proud of my group. Tonight’s game did not have a lot of flow to it. We were in serious foul trouble and survived the first half without Melo (Trimble) and a lot of guys stepped up and played well for us. I thought our defense was terrific, except for the fouling. I thought our defense was terrific. I thought we followed our game plan. 26 wins, We found out yesterday that we had a chance to set a record, most wins in a regular season and we really dialed in. I think because that number was set for us, they kept trying to get it done. We had the best player on the floor today as well, Melo made some shots and Jake (Layman) hit a big one. We got a little separation, down the stretch we just didn't make enough plays. Again though, another good win."

On getting the team ready for today
"We are kind of a mess right now. Evan was not sure if he was going to play, played him, Jake was sick and was not himself. We have a lot of things going on with our team, I was really worried about the motivation until we found out what the record was for most regular season wins. It was 25 and we had a chance to separate ourselves. I always tell the guys to be extraordinary instead of ordinary. 25 was extraordinary in itself and we had a chance to separate ourselves in our history and I think our guys were really dialed in."

On the plan at the end of the game
"We slipped a screen to get Dez the ball over there, and we had a back cut option and we had another screen inside out. So we had Melo coming off a screen, Richaud in the corner, but I knew Dez was going to shoot it. Dez made a big time shot."

On if he taught Melo everything he knows
"Yeah I wish I was as good as Melo. He is just a heady kid and plays smart. He got a little frustrated because Parker is a heck of a defender. He is faster and got underneath him. Varun (Ram) came in and took a charge. He does that to Melo every day in practice. In the end, Melo does what he does, he makes big shots and makes big plays. He gets in the lane, it was good to see."

FWIW, this will be Turgeon's first team out of 4 years to make the NCAA tourney.

Last year they went 17-15. He's won everywhere he's gone. However, does anyone here think that he just all of a sudden got smarter or perhaps he inked a special player.

We have 5 new faces coming in next year. I like our odds at least one of them will be special.

We sit close to the tunnel that the players walk in/out of.  Unfortunately I've been able to see Petteway's expressions/reactions after several losses this year.  Seeing him tonight, he was very, very upset walking into the locker room area, more than any of the other games. Couple that along with all of his family sitting in the family section wearing their #5 jersies...I left the game with a very sinking feeling that tonight could have been the last time we see Petteway in a Huskers jersey at PBA.  He's gotta do what he's gotta do, but I'd really like to see him with Shield, White, and Morrow!!

Right or wrong he dwells on what he perceives to be his mistakes and specifically mentioned his FTs post games.

I'm sure he was walking out and blaming himself for the loss. I still think he stays but let's see.

Updated Petteway shooting stats during the losing streak.....

FG's- 39/126 31%

3PT FG's- 12/59 20%

All players go thru slumps, but when that same player averages close to 16 shots a game while shooting 31% you are not going to win many games.  Zero in our case.  Hopefully he can finish the season strong because I'm not sure we will see him in a Husker uniform again.

I will throw out a couple of other thoughts:

- Sorry Walt, but you kind of look like a goober (a kindhearted, rather oblivious goofball. it's term of endearment really. it comes from the ancient scottish verb "to goub") with your high riding shorts... :)

- Did you notice that when Coach Miles received his technical, TP walked over and gave him five :)

- Did you notice that our defense was much, much more aggressive last night...

- Did you notice the dude that normally wears a retro jersey was in a referee jersey.  Refs stopped to visit with him as well.

- Did you notice that the students, specifically on the end line were MIA.

- Eades and Shavon...same sitiuation...this time Eades turned away and ran down the floor...no boom...no technical...hmm.

Except that ref was a Eades look-a-like. ;)
