Great effort by NU vs Minnesota, fun game to watch

  • Played well in 1st half, had nice lead
  • Played well early in 2nd half, nice to stretch the lead, something we haven't been doing
  • We gave some of it back, but never let them get the lead
  • Minny has some nice wins
  • Ind & Mich next, no easier, this league is brutal

Petteway?

  • 35 pts, 2 assists, 10 of 15 shooting, made 11 FTs
  • So critical when a guy like him has that going
  • I thought only two of his misses were bad shot decisions, one make was a bad decision, even though it was late in the shot clock

Lob pass?

  • Only been 2 1/2 months since we completed a lob dunk
  • Funny in film today, I still said, Benny you still threw one out of bounds over Petteway's head, he didn't remember that one

Crowd?

  • The more we can get the crowd going when we're on defense, the harder it is for the opponent
  • When I was at CSU we played at New Mex, they would scream the entire TV timeout
  • We'd have to take whiteboard and write words on it because players couldn't hear us
  • That's what I want PBA to be, be loud, with good sportsmanship, make it tough on opponents
  • Need that vs Ind

Defense vs Minn played well, just had a hot shooter

  • We did a good job on Mathieu, 9 turnovers
  • Doubling him off ball screens was something that others haven't done
  • However that let Smith get open a couple of times early & he got hot
  • At the same time it was worth the tradeoff
  • Can't let Mathieu get going, did a nice job
  • We were very active, stuck to game plan, Coach Hunter had the game plan/scout & did a nice job
  • We ran a lot of guys at him
  • Sometimes the big body guys were able to deflect some of his passes

Minny's inside players, Walt pulled them away from the basket

  • I thought he did a good job, hit 3 3s
  • We hurt Minny with Walt playing outside
  • He had 2 assists too, moved the ball, made extra pass
  • 19 assists was our best effort of the year, need to do more of that
  • Fun kid to deal with, has a lot of talent, will continue to improve

Rivers?

  • We just needed more length
  • Also gets Shields to wing more often
  • Gets Shields and Terran more rest by using Rivers
  • Shields still had 35 min & Terran 31 last night
  • Rivers had been doing a lot of scout team stuff until he started playing more
  • He had no rust at all, picked up our offense right where he left off

Webster, played especially well vs OSU

  • Best aggressive play of the season
  • Did a good job creating for others and himself
  • He's a combo guard, like him both at point and as off guard
  • He's going to get better and better
  • He did struggle vs PSU especially defensively though

PSU, great guards

  • Great leadership from Frazier & Newbill
  • That game, we led the whole way and just made mistakes
  • Had a rebound with 2 hands on it, gave it away for 2 pts
  • Then dribbled into pressure, gave away 3 more pts
  • Both happened in final minute so we really blew that game
  • Hopefully we've learned from it and can move on

Phone, Tom: 1, tempo played during OSU game, seemed to slow pace, will you continue that going forward? 2, Smith's knee injury, something that will be dealt with in off season?

  • Slower pace worked vs OSU, but didn't at PSU
  • Last night I said, let's keep attacking, share ball
  • Scored most points in a BIG game
  • We were at a point vs OSU where we were taking bad shots with turnovers so needed to slow it down
  • The more you trust the players, the more I'll let them play fast
  • Team has been an EKG in terms of what we do, but getting better

  • Smith bruised a hand/thumb
  • He struggles to catch the ball anyway
  • When Smith is thinking about an injury, he runs with a limp
  • But I think his knees are OK
  • He works hard, expends a lot of energy
  • We didn't work him hard today, let him recover, trying to get him some extra rest

Phone, Drew: Webster seems to have an open lane to rim a lot, but he seems to pass it more than he should - struggling with FTs too

  • He's a true frosh, and there's some adjustment to the speed of the game
  • Last year he could easily get that layup
  • But against teams like OSU, it gets blocked at times
  • I just tell him to play, try not to overcoach him
  • Want him to stay aggressive
  • His FT shooting has been quite a bit better lately vs early in the year, until those 2 misses late last night
  • I've seen improvement out of him, need to continue to see it

Phone, Dave: Didn't think there was any way we could win an 80 pt game, so please forgive me

  • Thanks you're forgiven

Sharpe asking questions now: Would you like to be a certain style of offense

  • I like the winning style
  • You can't control how some teams will try to influence the pace
  • Minny wanted to play faster, so we were able to get them going a little faster & they took some poor shots, let us get out and run
  • I want shots early in the shot clock when they're open, want to get to the rim late in the clock
  • There are times that I don't want to see us in the 80s
  • For example I wouldn't play Iowa in the 80s
  • Indiana will try to run us off the floor, they go faster than anyone else in the BIG
  • I just want a winning style, fast or slow

Minny vs Indiana?

  • I'd say Minny is more methodical on offense, tries to hurry you up on defense
  • They try to discombobulate you with their defense [now an off-topic discussion on the word discombobulate...  ;) ]

How about the BIG? Only Mich undefeated

  • Mich makes the 1/2 courter at half to beat us, and we miss a 1-inch shot at the rim late
  • They beat Minny late, they beat Wiscy late
  • Any mistake you make on defense, they make you pay
  • Great offensive weapons and they play sound defense, not overpowering, but solid enough

Get another shot at Michigan in a week

  • I like the matchup
  • I may eat my words, but we'll see

Greg Eaton, video coordinator, will be a special guest coming up

  • His dad was an AD and former coach
  • Worked for Rick Pitino, then went to Arkansas
  • Then I hired him at CSU from Arkansas, came to NU with me
  • Done a great job for us
  • Really challenging for him to deal with the video requests the coaches make, such as 25 individual clips on how Aaron Craft plays defense for example
  • Video is so important for scouting and so important for TV show
  • Want to make your product look great

Now Greg Eaton, video coordinator

Coach Miles must me OK to work for, followed him here?

  • He is, but judging from my hairline, you can see how tough it can be working for him
  • Assistant coaches don't have much hair either

What do you do?

  • Self scouting, opponent scouting video
  • Coaches will ask for certain edits
  • Last week asked for look at each of our players shots
  • Work with each assistant coach to break down their scouts
  • My assistants break down tape
  • Then I work with assistants to organize it

Where does video come from?

  • A lot of film exchange
  • Good relationships with other BIG video coordinators
  • Also will record off DirecTV & TimeWarner
  • More difficult to find tape during non-conf games, especially early in the year
  • Usually find something, even if it's at the last minute

Technological changes - say a player wants to see tape, can you use Ipads, phones, etc to show video?

  • We can - we use Hudl
  • They can access video on almost any device through Hudl account
  • They ask for specific items and I can upload it to Hudl

Camps?

  • We put on a lot of different camps
  • Day camps for 3rd grade thru srs in HS
  • Little Husker camp for K thru 2nd grade
  • Fun to watch kids grow & learn to love b-ball
  • Also have some team camps & overnight camps
  • Great to have fans of program join us
  • Haven't finalized schedule for this summer, hopefully within 2 weeks, we'll have online registration thru Huskers.com

After road game, what happens with video?

  • I'll have game uploaded ready for coaches to watch as we get on plane
  • Then I do the editing of offense & defense, any specific items/plays, while we're flying

Lincoln?

  • Do like it here
  • Has a rap for being a small town, but it's not
  • Haymarket area is great
  • Having ice rink there feels like home

Should I be surprised that Greg Sharpe has not asked about Biggs,  or is it because this is "Husker Radio" he's not going to go there?

Sharpe said during first hour that he would ask about Biggs, but expected not to receive an answer. I'd guess that he may have asked Miles off air how he wants to handle it, and they just decided not to bring it up. I believe his regular weekly press conference is Tuesday, so it'll be easier to handle it there with all the media present.

Sharpe & Davison discussed it in the 1st hour, nothing new unveiled. Going from memory Davison said it would be too bad if he's no longer on team, but he wouldn't be surprised at this point if that's the decision. Could be addition by subtraction type of thing, he said.

  • I heard Eaton say I was tough to work for, it's actually more like a vacation working for me
  • I see he also had his Red Sox hat on, trying to put a jab on me since I'm a Cardinals fan
  • I don't accept any Red Sox fan after the World Series
  • It's hard being a Cardinal fan, because we're always near the top  ;)

Indy here Thursday, big roster turnover

  • Lost 2 guys in first 5 picks or whatever
  • Coach Creen is rebuilding them
  • They're a little erratic, lose at home to NW, but then beat Wiscy
  • They're good at home, but a little inconsistent on road
  • They play at a fast pace
  • Curious to see how we can slow them down
  • They're playing more zone, and we've seen a lot of it, so that's good

Petteway, all league?

  • Conference call this morning, someone asked me about him whether he was underrated
  • I hadn't thought about it, but no one really talks about him
  • Last night 35 pts, been over 20 a few times
  • 3rd leading scorer in BIG, great numbers
  • He's doing it against the best, and he's doing it without a real mentor like Ubel helping him
  • Has a chance to be all-league eventually, even this year, he'd get my vote
  • He's a machine out there, in the gym all the time
  • Ben Johnson was working with Parker & Terran all spring, so I texted him today to apologize for our win, but I wasn't sure which to apologize for first, Parker's 2 jumpers or Terran's 35  ;)
  • I like Ben, he's a good friend
  • Before OSU game, he sent me texts, telling us how we could beat them, as Minny had just done it
  • I'm happy for him that he's able to go back home

This week?

  • No practice Tuesday, big academic day for our guys
  • Been real tough the past week with 3 games
  • We'll practice Wed
  • Do we have Michigan on Sunday? Not till next Wednesday? Ridiculous
  • Not sure who's after Michigan? Northwestern there?
  • Got to get home games, put a string together
  • Hopefully 2 out of 3 becomes 3 out of 4
  • Let's have a big crowd, Tom Creen doesn't like noise I've heard  ;)
  • My daughter has a basketball game, I'm headed there now

I would say that means there is no update to give on Biggs.  This coach is the most openly communicative coach we've ever had for basketball.  Maybe for any sport for that matter.  I have no problem with him not commenting on his status for now.

Say it again for the benefit of Stiltz Guy.

"The more we can get the crowd going when we're on defense, the harder it is for the opponent."

Hear that?  Miles thinks the crowd matters.

"The more we can get the crowd going when we're on defense, the harder it is for the opponent."

I wonder why the home court is an advantage.

You only stand when it's time to get up and go to the bathroom?

"The more we can get the crowd going when we're on defense, the harder it is for the opponent."

Bothers you when people stand in front of you?

"The more we can get the crowd going when we're on defense, the harder it is for the opponent."

The people who are footing the bill should be able to enjoy the game in peace and quiet?

"The more we can get the crowd going when we're on defense, the harder it is for the opponent."

Have I said that enough yet?  No, I don't think so.
