Lately, we have taken pride (and consolation) in the fact that we are supposed to have the best basketball facilities in the country.  At least for now.  After reading about KU's plans to build new athletic dorms (palaces?), I got to thinking about our athletes.  Aren't UNL athletes integrated into the same living quarters with other students?

I really have mixed feelings on this subject.  On one hand, the competitive side of me wants to see our program take a back seat to no one.  On the other hand, the arms race in spending is getting ridiculous.  I don't think it serves a young athlete well in life when they get so many things handed to them on a silver platter.

Thoughts? Would you like to see the best living quarters an 18 year old could dream of provided for our basketball players?

I don't know if it's more so about the "palace" itself or if it's about building team camaraderie. By "forcing" the players to life with each other, it seems to create an entirely different team dynamic. It happens in every sport. KU seems to have capitalized in maximizing that amenity, however.

If I remember that is what got Oklahoma in the big trouble back in the 90's.

All football dorm and they were out of control.

Maybe somebody can remember more than me, but wasn't there like selling drugs and something to do with guns. Didn't it cost Barry his job?

You are correct sir.

Personally, I think the good ship USS Ridiculous sailed years ago when it comes to collegiate sports. I just don't need to identify with a winner bad enough to trash an entire economic model. But I know I'm in a minority here.

It'll slow down when the money and students start to dry up, as they already have been for a few years. Until then, let the chaos continue!

Starting QB Charles Thompson was selling Coke & Guns out of his dorm room, and it DID cost Switzer his job. But, let's not forget Oklahoma was the original outlaw program.

I believe all the players who still live on campus are in the Suites or knoll, which is about as close to a "palace" as possible. I live in knoll and see tai a lot.

Ben, does he seem to like it here?  Is he enjoying himself?  Most importantly, does he have a girlfriend?  Someone whom he'd rather stick around Lincoln this summer to see than going back to New Zealand for winter there?

The times that I see him, he either has his headphones on or has a smile on his face. But, I have never seen him with a girl... But he's an athlete on campus so I'm pretty sure he has met a few girls.

I am pretty sure that there are NCAA rules that say at least 51% of students living in a specific dorm cannot be athletes, this is to prevent schools from building the so called "palace" for only the athletes to live in, I don't know all of the details but I am pretty sure there is a rule in place on this matter
