throwback Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 Out indefinitely after deciding to have back surgery - he had already missed 3 games this season with back problems. He averaged 9.5 points and 8.3 rebounds during his eight appearances. There is no timetable for McGary's return at this time, though Michigan's medical staff does expect him to make a full recovery http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2013/12/michigan_forward_mitch_mcgary.html I believe that makes UM a pretty small team, not sure they have much on the bench to replace him. hhcmatt Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 Looks like those expectations took a toll on the old back Quote
jdostal Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 He wasn't a very good player, but he could have really hurt us. Quote
trickey Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 He wasn't a very good player, but he could have really hurt us. Thank god we don't have to put up with our own not very good players who are preseason All-Americans by the Associated Press and 2nd team on USA Today. Quote
Shuttlesworth Posted December 27, 2013 Report Posted December 27, 2013 He wasn't a very good player, but he could have really hurt us. Future 1st Rounder. Quote
Huskerpapa Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 He would be a matchup nightmare for us. Hate to see the injury, but it provides us with a greater opportunity for victory. Quote
MichHusker Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 This guy and this team in general is very overrated Quote

royalfan Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 This guy and this team in general is very overrated agree on team, but not on him. He was sensational down the stretch last year. Quote
jdostal Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 Did you guys watch the games or just see his stats? He's incredibly overrated because Michigan's amazing guards last year drew help defense and allowed him to just clean up the glass. Almeida could have done what he was doing. In fact, I think he's just a glorified rich man's Andre. Quote

Huskerpapa Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 Other people with more expertise than I agree with me. Wasn't he on all-american and all-big ten lists? Quote
jdostal Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 Yes. These accolades are what make him overrated. He should be all-big ten, but all-american is a joke. Quote
Miles ahead of the rest Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 To even compare him to Almeida is ridiculous. McGary is very talented. Great mobility for his size, see's the floor well, good touch around the basket to go with good footwork and post moves. To say he's "not very good" is just insane. Quote
GoBigRed Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 Wasn't he a 4 or 5 star recruit? And just a freshman last year? Quote

GoBigRed Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 Yeah he's not overrated. He will have a very long nba career doing what he does if he is healthy. He's a 15 ppg and 10 rpg NBA player for many seasons. Where is Almeida? Can't even sniff the nbdl probably. Only things he is sniffing end up on his stomach. Quote
HB Posted December 28, 2013 Report Posted December 28, 2013 Yes. These accolades are what make him overrated. He should be all-big ten, but all-american is a joke. This is what doesn't make any sense. You first said "he wasn't a very good player", and then you said he should be all Big 10. How could someone be all Big 10, in what is universally believed to be an extremely good basketball conference, and not be a very good player? Quote

In fact, I think he's just a glorified rich man's Andre. I did, but it seems you didn't, or don't have a very good eye for what you are watching. He was tremendous down the stretch last year. You would have to be biased or a very bad basketball evaluator to think otherwise. And anyone that is saying Andre could do what he was doing, certainly cannot be taken seriously any longer in a reasonable discussion about basketball. That is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard on here. hhcmatt 1 Quote
uneblinstu Posted December 29, 2013 Report Posted December 29, 2013 this is hilarious. He probably didn't merit the preseason All American mention, but the kid's talented. If he's been playing hurt all year, of course he's not going to look as good as he can be when he doesn't need back surgery. Quote
NeeandMe Posted December 30, 2013 Report Posted December 30, 2013 "Good down the stretch last year" is not a very good argument for the kid's ability. If you watched Michigan last year, other than "down the stretch" highlights, or watched them this year, you'd know he's talented but not an All-American. He benefited GREATLY from teams trying to lock down MU's guards. He is good, I'd love to have him in red, but he is ridiculously over-hyped. Either way, he would've given Nebraska huge problems this year and with him out Nebraska now has a legitimate chance to win this game. jdostal 1 Quote

First of all I don't watch "highlights" and secondly I don't agree with that analysis at all. Many freshmen peak at the end of the season. And he more than peaked. He dominated in the biggest games there are anywhere in college hoops. So I think it is an extremely good argument actually. I want a guy that was a proven force in the biggest games any day of the week. You don't like guys that do that, then that is your choice. Quote

Maybe you're sick of hearing about him, but I honestly haven't heard that much about him this year until this injury. I had to go look up his averages and found he is actually doing better statistically than last year, without those NBA guards. And he was doing it while apparently needing back surgery. Quote
hhcmatt Posted December 30, 2013 Report Posted December 30, 2013 It's an expectations deal. Is he a top 5 player in the country when healthy? Probably not. Is he a great center that could start for almost every team in the country. Yeah. This is a big loss for Michigan. jdostal 1 Quote
