People may not like Barfknecht for what he writes about Big Red, but he usually comes up with an excellent sports column on whatever subject matter he's researching.  It's kind of hard to believe that the OWH has been fortunate to keep him around for as long as they have.  It seems that quite a number of other great writers have moved on such as Liz Merrill and Mitch Sherman (to name a couple of 'em in this past decade).

Good read!

"He'll try to play anybody" - Love this.

Would love for NU to bring in Louisville in a couple of years. Often times schools try to get a road game in their players home state. This would be a fun one.

Say what you want about Barf and the OWH...but this is a nicely done article.  I always like a glimpse inside the program and Coach Miles head.

We'll see what kinds of articles he's writing in a couple of years about Husker Basketball. Still in the honeymoon period with media. I fully expect his tone to change after year 4. That's his MO.

Edited to Add:

This was mostly and informational article by Barfy.

It could also be that he has been more objective about Barry and Doc and he saw by year 4 it was not working...despite what our always positive fan minds would like to believe. It is hard to be a fan and be objective.

LB has to set aside any fan feelings he may have, while we never have to shed our rose colored glasses.

Nor do I ever need to fill my at least half full glass.

If things work out as NU fans envision...LB's attitude and coverage will change by year 4... for the better...better product, better coverage and easier for him. I hope we make it real easy!

This is just a puff piece LB wrote because he had to say something and there isn't much negative to harp on. I think he is still miffed because the athletic department shared news with the public through the LJS -- especially Rosenthal -- instead of through him. His reporting surrounding the firing of Doc and the process of hiring a new coach was pointedly personal in its attacks and quite often factually incorrect because he didn't have access to the AD.

The OWH, -- LB in particular -- is COMMITTED to Creighton and will continue to be as long as they are even a reasonably good BB program. If there is any warming with regard to Husker BB on the part of the OWH (and LB) it is only because things are coming together that help them sell papers. Those things would seem to be

-- Tim Miles is entertaining

-- Perhaps our new AD is working with them a bit more and

-- There is an excitement about the potential of NU winning that has been absent before.

I think LB can barely stand it!

All I can say is that Barf was at UNL at the same time I was.  The OWH likes to stir controversy, but down deep at least, I think Lee is a fan of the Huskers.

LB, and the rest of the OWH sports department, know that more people read articles when they are negative. Piss of the majority is the OWH business model.

Has anyone noticed that Barfknect is writing his own articles about the Charleston Tourney games while the LJS is by "the Lincoln Journal Star."  This tells me that the OWH at least forked over the money to fly Barfknect to the tournament while Rosenthal stayed home.  Say what you will about the OWH and Barfknect, but it appears that the OWH takes Neb. basketball more seriously than the LJS.  Can anyone imagine the LJS doing this in football.  Heck, it probably has 3-4 reporters in Happy Valley today.

It's an ownership problem.  It's why Brian Rosenthal has to write articles while watching ESPN3 and potentially burning garbage to stay warm.

Lee Enterprises, newspaper company that owns Journal Star, is "burning its furniture to stay alive," writes analyst.

Ron, you've been around here for a long time and I admire your passion and loyalty for the program.  So I'll just assume the passion got the better of you when you made this statement.

Personally, the adjectives "concise" and "objective" come to mind when I read one of Lee's articles.  Not to say I haven't been angered after reading one of his articles.  When that occurs, I usually find the reason I'm angry is because what he said happens to be true.

Lee just did a good article on Tai as well (another thread).  Since the OWH sent him to the tournament, and the LJS sent nobody, it appears Lee and the OWH is getting some good access.

To clarify, Lee Barfknecht has nothing to do with Creighton basketball and does not care. He is the Huskers' beat writer and has been for a long time. I'm pretty sure he wants to see the Huskers succeed because just like Rosenthal, he wants to cover a winning team.
