Well geez....if they are taking him to the UNO vs. Creighton soccer match, we don't stand a chance.  I wouldn't be surprised if he committed right there at halftime of the soccer game.  No way can our practice facility, new arena, or a Husker football game compete with that.  I hope he is laughing all the way down I-80 and thinking what a waste of time that was.

I can imagine the pitch now

Miles: Leon this is 85,000 soon to above 90,000 people going insane for a meaningless non con game, can you imagine the atmosphere when were undefeated with Michigan State rolling in here and a shot to clinch the division a play Ohio State in the BIG TEN title game.

Leon: no coach this is crazy Creighton showed me some lame soccer game and their blueprints for their facilities when i may not even be there anymore,

Miles: Now Leon, imagine if you come to NU, 2014 were rolling after a pretty good season NCAA tourney appearance second straight season of sell outs and we play Michigan and Ohio state fresh off of sweet 16 appearances in the first games of the year at Pinnacle Bank Arena...imagine that atmosphere

Leon: speechless, nods head commits to NU then and there.

To play devil's advocate, Creighton could point out the fact that they're coming off something Nebraska's never even seen...

That is true but I'm hoping that we soon add men's soccer as the B1G has many good teams. <_<:)

very true...but a the same time all of crieghton's watershed moments are forgetteable to kids of Gilmore's age, the last time they made it to the round of 32 when they beat florida? i was a sophmore in high school...im 25 now. granted they've had success recently with McDermott but, i feel we have momentum hope, THE BEST CONFRENCE IN COLLEGE BBALL!! i think he hears our pitch and tells creighton to kick rocks...if we go after him...if not and we feel he isnt what we need than he go watch all the soccer he can digest...(i can only stand about 5 mintues)

They made the round of 32 this year. And while I completely agree with you, the BIG was the best conference for one year. Again, I agree to the points we should be selling him on... but it's not like CU has nothing to offer. Even though I despise them.

Yeah we don't need to waste our time with some of these lowly mid majors from these conferences you only hear about when they pull an upset off in March.

It's as if they think the league they're joining is anywhere near as good as the one it used to be, and they have an attitude about it.

Wow that's downright entertaining right there. It's like they think that they are automatically on par with a Syracuse just because they joined the watered down league that Syracuse used to be a part of. Teams just bow down to almighty Creighton because they will play who they want, when they want to play them. Every school wants a crack at playing in front of 18,000 screaming blue idiots. I really can't wait to watch them circle the drain. I'm really gonna get used to watching them drop conference game after conference game. God I hate Creighton.

Didn't take 'em long, did it?

You'd think they'd be a little bit deferential and remember their roots until they get at least a season or two under their belts.  But nope.

i know that, as i typed it and posted it i felt kinda dumb...point of that whole statement was yes, theyve been to the tourney won some games, we havent, yet we have the new arena that will be crazy, the new practice facility, and the momentum.

Bobcat, your posts are the most humorous I think I've ever read anywhere!  After completely failing epically on the NCAA tourney smack, you now go after the due date on the completion of our new training facility and botch that too!  (Incidentally it is scheduled to be completed late next spring or early summer, depending on the weather, so it will be there the entire time an incoming freshman will be on the team.)

On the whole soccer vs. football deal, the key is in the presentation.  Instead of selling the "look how many come out for football games", I suspect that McDermott and crew sell the whole "basketball players are the big men on campus at Creighton" angle.  Who knows what works best, and it certainly varies kid to kid, but don't underestimate the idea that a basketball recruit may want to go to a place where basketball (as opposed to football) comes first in the sport minds of the kids on campus.

I’ll give you i messed up on the tourney deal, Fair point...and the new facility fair point..i assumed Creighton hadn’t begun construction. BUT... i will refute your point, you can sell him on big man on campus spiel all you want..their still bringing them in for a visit at a soccer game, so you can talk about basketball all they want, this is still occurring at a soccer game, not a world cup game, or a even a friendly..but Creighton vs. UNO...I’m sorry i know globally its very popular, and its slowly surpassing hockey as America's fourth sport.. But in the end  NU will bring him in for a visit to a top 15 nationally ranked football game and most kids in America prefer Football over Futbol... and thanks for calling me humorous, all take your backhanded sarcasm as a compliment nonetheless I’ll take it where I can get it.

I wouldn't get too cocky considering Creighton stole Zach Hanson from Miles last year. I do think that after this year, Nebraska will be trending upwards, and Creighton is going to hit a wall after losing Mcdermot and gibbs.

We would be a pretty scary team with Gilmore and Bolden. It's hard to imagine NU having this much talent after what we've gone through the last 10-15 years.

How do you know that Nebraska will be ranked in the top 15 when you bring Gilmore in for a visit?  How do you know that the team Nebraska plays that day won't suck royally?  Maybe he comes on a day where you are playing one of those non D1 schools like Idaho St?

As far as the opponent in the soccer game goes, I don't think it really matters much. He will be seeing a top 5 soccer team play either way. ;)

Honestly, who the heck knows what drives these kids.  You can't say the kid will want to commit because he went to a football game anymore than I can say he will commit because of what Creighton will offer.  I mean, seriously, how many basketball players has Nebraska brought to football games in the past that didn't commit?  Every kid is evaluating schools through his own set of criteria.  I would say that if they choose a school for football/soccer or any sport other than the sport they actually participate in, I'd be a bit worried.

Personally, I'd rather if the visits took place during basketball season so they can see exactly what they will be experiencing, but if you want them to commit during the fall signing period, a school doesn't really have that option.

i know from personal experience when i was looking at colleges, how their other sports programs faired made a subtle difference in my choice...ironically Peru State had a terrible basketball team(my second favorite sport) so I was SOL. But the hyperbole about NU being top 15 is all my wishes and was meant for humor; i do believe we will use Football as a tool, as it’s we have along with the new arena, and the Practice Facility. Unless we are going to start recruiting kids like they did in He Got Game or Blue Chips, NU has to use what they have at their disposal. Much like Creighton does, i just feel are assortment of tools will win over Creighton’s, i could be wrong, and ill admit to it when i am.

I should have known that bringing football into the discussion would cause some to lose all control of reason

Whoooooooa a top 5 soccer team, that might lead to a 2 - nil game instead of the traditional 1 nil yawner.  We can throw National titles in rifle and bowling to go with real football.

Good.  You should totally take him to a women's bowling match (do they call them matches?).  If that doesn't cause him to commit on the spot, I don't know what will.

Speaking of yawners, that Nebraska-Iowa football game was nonstop action, wasn't it?  I was in Vegas at the time siting in a sportsbook waiting for the Creighton-Wisconsin basketball game and they actually turned it off to turn on something more exciting.

Posted

Why would Nebraska have the advantage because of the football game?

You know Creighton is going to sell him on the fact that their football team gets 95,000 fans to every one of their home games, too.

I thought he was a basketball player, not a football player.  Are we still talking about Gilmore?

Posted

Anyone outside of Nebraska doesn't even know what conference Creighton is in our what other teams are in that conference. I doubt Gilmore wants to take on the pressure of being the next McDermott. Creighton's chance at an NCAA tourney run is going to end after this year, and Nebraska's run will just be starting.

There's a much better chance of getting recognized for your play in the BIG 10 than the Fake Big East

Creighton Fan, if you want people to agree with you, you are in the wrong place.

Posted

Both programs have momentum.  Yes, Creighton’s due for some rebuilding after McDermott graduates, but its conference change (regardless of what you think about the new Big East in comparison to the Big 10, the new Big East is going to be viewed as a way better league by HS kids than the MVC was) and new practice facility (the current one is terrible, and Creighton’s been a very good mid-major program with that disadvantage) will bring in noticeably better recruits than have chosen Creighton in the past.  Just because things are looking up for Nebraska does not mean they are looking down for Creighton.  I suppose it’s all relative, cause Nebrasketball’s tournament drought is so severe that it’s impossible to see storm clouds in the near future.  Plus, there is at least some tangible evidence of Miles pushing the program in the right direction. Conversely, it’s hard to imagine that Creighton  will seamlessly transition to its existence without Doug McDermott.  But, it's not reasonable to expect Creighton to return to the Rick Johnson years, either.

Whatever the case, some members of each fanbase need to worry a lot more about conference rivals than an in-state rivalry that is of very limited importance.  What Chris Collins, Richard Pitino, Fran McCaffery, John Groce, and Pat Chambers are doing will have infinitely more to do with Nebraska’s future than what happens in downtown Omaha.  By the same token, Creighton fans should not worry about Tim Miles and company, but should be wondering how Creighton will compete over the long term against Marquette, Villanova, Xavier, Georgetown and the rest.

This discussion has spiraled out of control (I probably had a hand in that, sorry) but I just want to point out that a sportsbook flipping channels from one game to another has nothing to do with if the game is exciting or not.  It all depends on how much action there is on each particular game.

By the same token, Creighton fans should not worry about Tim Miles and company, but should be wondering how Creighton will compete over the long term against Marquette, Villanova, Xavier, Georgetown and the rest.

well... when we are going after the same recruits, I think we do have to worry about each other. And it is reasonable to be making comparisons.

It is a big deal that Mcdermot and gibbs will be gone next year. In the MVC, you can still have a chance to win the conference in a down year, but that will not fly in a real conference.

After this year, i think it will be a while before Creighton is a tournament team again.

Anyone outside of Nebraska doesn't even know what conference Creighton is in our what other teams are in that conference.

Creighton Fan, if you want people to agree with you, you are in the wrong place.

Now you are just being silly.  Everybody who knows anything about basketball knows about the Big East and certainly high school basketball players do.  The conference has its own TV contract and every game will be televised.

You're right.  I just didn't expect people would argue every single point just because I am a Creighton fan.  I guess I overestimated my audience.

I guess we'll see.  Granted, all americans don't come around everyday, but I see nothing but positive momentum for the Creighton program right now.  We have two very talented freshmen bigs that we can build around for several years and, as you well know, are hard to find.  A successful year this year could lead to a whole new type of recruit landing at the hilltop.  I find it amusing that you say Nebraska has positive momentum despite a pretty abysmal year last year, yet Creighton, who is coming off wins in the NCAA tourney in back to back years and returns essentially every player but one off of last year's roster has negative momentum.  I guess we define momentum differently.

It's plenty reasonable to be making comparisons, but there really isn't that much recruiting overlap. More importantly, Creighton's got to compete with St. John's and others, not Nebraska, to make the big dance, and Nebraska's got to compete with Iowa and others, not Creighton, to make the big dance. Coaches for both teams have been right to underplay the rivalry for years, cause it's much bigger for a lot of the fans than it ever will truly be for the programs.
