Here is an example of one of the applicable rules:

15.5.1.2.1 Exception—Receipt of Institutional Academic Aid Only. In football or basketball, a student-athlete who was recruited (see Bylaw 15.02.8) by the awarding institution and whose only source of institutional financial aid is academic aid based solely on the recipient’s academic record at the certifying institution, awarded independently of athletics interests and in amounts consistent with the pattern of all such awards made by the institution, may compete without counting in the institution’s financial aid team limits, provided he or she has completed at least one academic year of full-time enrollment at the certify- ing institution and has achieved a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.000 (on a 4.000 scale) at the certifying institution. (Adopted: 10/27/05 effective 8/1/06, Revised: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)

would be interesting if NU could pull this off... seems like a reach to me, but could definitely be a possibility. This would allow another spot to be opened up for 2014, as some are speculating someone to leave.

You're either an athletic scholarship player or walkon. Once you play in a game all academic scholarships must cease forward.

Are you positive this is the case? I asked some Michigan fans about Tummala when we started going after him, and they said he was a preferred walk-on there because he was on an academic scholarship. I thought it was possible just with an extremely tough vetting process so teams didn't abuse it.

So say I'm a genius and have full tuition paid for by academic scholarships to UNL. I also play basketball. I'm good enough for Miles to invite me to walk on to the team but nowhere near the level of being good enough at basketball to receive a division 1 scholarship to play basketball. I am also poor enough that I absolutely need those academic scholarships to attend school. Does this mean that I can't play basketball or I will lose my academic scholarships? I understand the intent of te rule and the potential for abuse there but if I'm not good enough to get a basketball scholarship does this still apply to me?

Its up until you play in football or basketball.  Nebraska has had several football player walk-ons that get their school paid for them academically for the first few years and then they get faced with that dilemma of playing and losing your support.  Several kids end up just being practice players to save it and others quit the team at that point.  Others may be a year or two from graduating and the thought of playing even just some minimal snaps is worth it at that point to them.

There is no way around it.  Trust me if it were possible to really get around teams would.  I mean Myron Rolle couldnt be on any academic scholarships at FSU and he was offered a Rhodes Scholarship which is extremely hard to get.

Again if it were possible youd know and hear about guys being able to get around it that are main contributors to a team.  I mean Sean Fisher was accepted to some big time medical schools and was an Academic AA for like 4 years but people questioned his play.  Im sure Pelini would've tried to get him on academic schollies if he could to free up the athletic schollie.

Under the foregoing rule, a walk-on at Nebraska should be able to receive any one of the following institutional scholarships and not be counted against the 13 scholarship limit, as long as he does not compete during his freshman year and meets all other requirements:

  • Chancellor’s Scholarship

Students who are finalists in nationally recognized scholarship competitions (e.g. National Merit Scholarship) are eligible for consideration for full tuition coverage plus a $2,000 stipend annually (Scholarship is applicable for up to four years with three inclusive summers).

  • Regents Scholarship

Full tuition up to 120 credit hours inclusive of all University of Nebraska credit; including approved study abroad and Extended Education credit. A select group of Regents Scholars will also receive a Top Scholar stipend of $1,500 for up to four years.

  • David Distinguished Scholarship

$3,500 per year, renewable up to four years or the completion of a Bachelor's degree, whichever comes first.

So, as long as they don't compete as freshmen. Might that explain why Sai sat out at Michigan as a freshman? And was counted as a walk-on?

Just askin. I don't know the answer.

I posted earlier that the Michigan fans I talked to said he was a preferred walk on and on academic scholarship.

Its a "rule" in a book but show me any guy on any team at any school thats a starter that is walking on and getting one of the aforementioned academic scholarship.

True. But really there aren't too many basketball players capable of starting that have earned any of those high profile academic scholarships. I see the problem if you bring in a player and then suddenly 'find' one of those academic scholarships for them. But what if the player has earned one of those scholarships on their own academic merit before they even decide on a school?

Maybe Sai's parents will just foot the bill so he can walk on after all.

Would you, as a parent, foot the bill for schooling at Nebraska when that school has already offered a full-ride athletic scholarship? I can't see that happening.

I have to think that Kamdy is right on this one.  There would have been no reason for Sean Fisher to be taking up a football scholarship if an athlete can take an academic scholarship.

He scored a 39 out of a possible 45 on the MCAT, which is in the top 1 percent of all who take it.  He has 4.0 grade-point average in both business administration and pre-med, and he's an Academic All-American.  Right now he is waiting to hear back from the University of Chicago, Stanford, Michigan, Nebraska and Johns Hopkins.

If an athlete can take an academic scholarship, then there is no way that Fisher wouldn't have been able to do that.

Then why arent people doing that in football.  Fisher and Myron Rolle wouldve qualified and in todays football you can bet your ass the coaches would take every advantage of this rule.

Also Norm like Silverback stated dad is a professor so he gets the discount and could walk-on.

Paul Velander.  (You didn't say it had to be a good team.)
Paul Velander never played for Nebraska while on academic scholarship.

If he was on academic scholarship, he had to forfeit it to play.

As a Senior he was given a basketball scholarship we couldn't fill.

Why would you give a basketball scholarship to a guy on academic scholarship?

Why wouldn't Duke have 80 walkons if you could play guys on academic scholarships.

If Sai Tummala is playing for the Huskers next year on an academic scholarship it will be along side Roburt Sallie, Michael Jordan, and a dunking werewolf in some alternative universe.

At least we aren't the only ones to have this discussion.  Check out this discussion on a Kentucky message board.  It goes just about the same as this thread--right down to quoting the same NCAA Bylaw and to expressions of disbelief.

Pretty funny.

But . . . , seriously, read the NCAA rule.  It specifically applies to "a student-athlete who was recruited."

Don't know whether Sai would qualify for an academic scholarship . . . but it would be fun to see Roburt and Michael together . . . not so much the werewolf.

He's also an adidas kid.  Good for us.

(other trivia of note in that film, the scene in the coaches office features a "Husker Power" calendar or poster)

Was "filmed" in the town of Fremont Nebraska if I remember correctly. B)

Some of the scenes were.  One of which was the locker room/coach's office.

I thought so, too, but apparently that's just a rumor and is not actually true:

http://www.fast-rewind.com/locations_teenwolf.htm

There has been long standing debate as to whether other locations used allegedly included Fremont, NB. An Alumni of Fremont High School wrote in with the following:

"In a previous review of "Teen Wolf" it states that some of the gym scenes and locker room scenes were filmed at Fremont High School, in Fremont Nebraska. This is a false report. None of the scenes from "Teen Wolf" were filmed in the state of Nebraska.

There is a credit at the end of the film that recognizes Friends from Fremont Nebraska. The reasoning for this rumor is the sticker and calendar in the coaches office that are Husker Power and various Husker items that make an appearance in the movie. Scotts kitchen is a Husker calendar as well. This is being investigated and believed that someone from the City of Fremont may have came up with the plot and possibly idea for Teen Wolf.

All I know for sure is that NO shots were made in the school or in Nebraska. A friend of mine was the Coach of the football team at that time and he has no recollection of such filming in locker rooms or thereabouts. I am also a Alumni of Fremont High and nothing in any scene is familiar. Neither Michael J. Fox nor the Coach Bobby Finstock stepped foot in Nebraska much less Fremont confirmed by then Head Football Coach and Athletic Director of Fremont High at the time of shooting of film."
