So, that Akron vs. VCU "game."  What do you do?  If you're Shaka Smart, that is.

#1 and #2 seeds kill people all the time.

If you're Shaka Smart, you get valuable playing time for your bench playing the same style you play.

Misery bites the big one, what a great day of basketball based on one game!

And they thought that the Huskers were killing their RPI. And by moving to a new conference they would dominate the SEC.

Remind me...

How did we miss on Eikmeier again?  I enjoyed watching him play in H.S. and he seemed like a kid that could play D1

Two Nebraska kids scoring double figure points in a win in the NCAA tourney.  But not playing for Nebraska.  Which didn't make the tourney.  So, can someone tell me again how they weren't good enough for us?

Colorado State was a fun team to watch. If we look like that in a couple years I will be a happy man. What a fantastic job Miles did at that program.

I think we'll look a lot like Colorado State....the trick is to look like that with "better" players.  Hopefully that will mean some local kids as well.

At the beginning of the season, Kevin Kietzman on WHB in Kansas City (an unabashed K State homer who Mizzou fans LOATHE, despite his repeated attempts to suck up to the Tigers on his show) was talking about the Mizzou hoops team in their first year in the SEC.  He was really REALLY bullish on them, basically he said the league title was going to be between Kentucky and Mizzou, nobody else had a chance (hello, Florida???).

In fact, he thought Mizzou was going to run away with the league title, and went so far as to say, and I paraphrase here:

"Missouri is going to have to be careful not to breeze through the league too easily, they don't want to become complacent come tourney time.  They might have to try not to win EVERY game in a blowout, they should keep a few games close so they can stay sharp for the postseason".

Yeah, he really said that.  Every time the Tigers lost in conference play I just thought to myself, "yeah, Keitzman, they better be careful to not blow EVERYONE they play out, huh?".

What a tool.  How's that 6th place finish workin out for ya, Zou?

I actually had Wichita State in the first round.  The winner of Ole Miss/Wiscy and KSU will be the one to take down Gonzaga

Yep I've got Wisconsin

I've got Wisky in the Final Four.

Just had my final 4 wrecked as well

He'd be fun to listen to right about now; he's a riot when K-State loses!

Colorado State's best player yesterday?  Far and away, that would be Dorian Green.  He's a 6'2" point guard from KC.  KC as in Kansas City, that place where we got Benny Parker and Brandon Ubel from.  But Dorian Green?  We didn't even look at him.  Of course, he had no real offers on our level.  Even Creighton didn't offer, though they looked at him.  Credit Tim Miles for seeing something there.  I'm sure someone will say he's not physical enough to play in the Big 10 conference but he sure seemed to survive the Moutain West OK, and that's not exactly a bad conference this year.

Don't know what the record for first round upsets is, but this year's gotta be up there. Georgetown about to drop out. Wow.

There is not 3 or 4 teams that are a step above the others this year.

So, that Akron vs. VCU "game."  What do you do?  If you're Shaka Smart, that is.  No starter played more than 26 minutes.  Three starters played fewer than 20 minutes.  I think they continued to press pretty much the whole time and forced 21 turnovers.  Final score was 88-42.  That's a crushing of historical proportions.  Most lopsided 5/12 game ever.

If Akron had a full roster, I might feel differently, but with them down a few players for various reasons, I think I have a problem with overkill.  The lead was insurmountable at half time.  Ten minutes into the 2nd half, they should have been running the clock down to virtually nothing on every possession.  But with 9 minutes left in the game and a lead of 77-35, they were far from the point of running clock to kill the game.  After Akron hit a free throw to close to 77-36 with 8:35 to play, VCU scores on a dunk :22 later.

Again, I might feel differently if Akron was at full strength.  But embarrassing a team that's missing so many players?  That's ... just not right, IMO.  But, I don't know.  Not sure what he could have done significantly different.  With all those missing players, it left Akron really not a legitimate NCAA tourney team.

Norm,

I did not watch that game, so I certainly do not know all of what happened...but your description reminds me of the good TO football years where the Huskers had in their 2s, 3s and 4s playing in the 3rd quarter and the scoring continued.

Yet, the theory then was those kids seldom got to play in a game...when they did, was the coach  supposed to hamstring them by demanding they play differently then how they were coached?

I understand your concern, yet I think the tail end of the bench should be allowed to have their minutes to play in their system. They should be able to show the coaches, their family, friends, etc. what they can do.

At least in football, most teams can stop passing [but not TO's Huskers] to shorten the game while lessening the score. But standing out at the half court line dribbling in an unguarded situation is not playing basketball. Those kids deserve their all to rare minutes to play.

It is a bad deal for one team either way you play it.

Just a thought from the far far end of the bench.

That's probably a big reason why they keep teams as close to home as possible, especially the top ones.  Also, the tourney is a little bit like the NFL in this way that it's better on tv than it is in person in most cases.
