Need another scorer not going to lie the moves Fred has made so far seem underwhelming

I wouldn’t necessarily call a multiple year starting PG at Utah, a former top 25 SG, and a big man who we beat another B1G team (who was closer to home than us) underwhelming.  Especially when we’ve basically upgraded/equaled out each position we’ve lost.

Lawrence - Woosley

Diop/Keita - Morgan

Rice/Tominaga - Griffiths

and we still have 3 ships to fill.

We're still very active.    Believe a couple of guys are visiting today.   Shooting guard and big post player.   Somehow the post player has been under the radar.

Sorry, post may have been "premature" (where have I heard that before? 🙂).   Stuff changes rapidly at this time of year, visits on, then suddenly off.  Sorry for the goose chase.

4 scholarships to fill.

And I'd take Rice and Tominaga over Griffiths

Tominaga shouldn't be listed as he is out of eligibility, whereas Rice made a choice and I wish him the best of luck at PSU.

As for Rice over Griffiths, I have to disagree there as GG's ceiling is a lot higher than ER's IMO. He has a better overall skill set, can defend multiple positions and has better length. He was pretty impressive at times in our game at home against Rutgers, especially when he was matched up with Gary. Blocked Gary's shot twice when he tried to take him to the bucket, rebounded over Williams down low and drew a foul and scored over a taller defender taking the ball to the basket making a difficult finish look easy. I think we really got a good one.

Janowski should have been included with Griffiths to make it a more equal comparison.

I think Janowski can have a better freshman year than Eli Rice did production wise. And I think Griffiths can have a much better first year here than Keisei did his first year (5.7 ppg, 33% from 3). But it's hard to see Griffiths equaling Keisei's 15.1 points per game and shooting percentages from this season.

Also, none of these guys should be confused with being elite defenders. But Eli was terribly slow and Griffiths is 6-8 too and seems way more athletic, so if he even tries that should be an upgrade. And Janowski should be a better defender than Keisei even as a freshman.

According to this analytics site EvanMiya.com, Eli Rice had the least defensive value on the team at 0.29. CJ was next at 0.29. Keisei was next at 0.64.

You can’t replace Keisei but Griffiths and Essigan / Nova kid would be an upgrade in my opinion.

if Mast is out and we get Milicic and Kyle (or some other rim protecting 4/5)

I’d call that a 3 run homer

I certainly would tske Keisei; but he no longer is eligible, so wishing for it won't bring him back.

Eli was somewhat of an enigma.   I loved his shot.  Yet the ball sort of got stuck with him at times.  He did remind me a bit of Bryce McGowan without the upper echelon talent.  He was slow on defense but rebounded reasonably well.

Griffith seems as talented offensively and his rebounding seems, at least, equal to Eli.  He also has decent handles.  What separates him, at least a bit, is his ability on the defensive end.  I do think he has more lateral quickness than Eli and displays a "want" to defend.

I guess we will see how it plays out the next few years.

If the goal is to improve, then you need to list him.  we don’t have the high school class to replace the guys that we lost. So we need to add more from the portal.

I’m meh on Essegian.  Id rather almost roll with Janowski.    If we get Igor and Kyle, I’ll feel good about next year

I think he or the Nova kid would be great as 7-8 type guy both probably as good ot better as Wilcher as overall players. I probably favor the Nova kid a little more. I’m high on Jano too. PT at guard and wing will be competitive which is great.

Neither are anything above average.  I’d actually be pretty disappointed if we can’t get their production out of Janowski.

I agree with your last statement and I think we're in the process of trying to do just that. 🙂

FWIW:

Gavin Griffiths was a top 50 national recruit with offers from UCONN, Alabama, Creighton and others.

Nick Janowski was a top 130 national recruit with offers from Marquette, Wisconsin, Iowa State and others.
Eli Rice was a top 300 recruit with offers from Georgetown and St. Bonaventure.

Jamarques Lawrence was a top 200 recruit with offers from Wake Forest, Cal and DePaul.

At least on paper, this is a serious upgrade in talent at guard over Rice and Lawrence.

Now, Keisei's clutch shots and momentum changing shots will certainly be missed, don't get me wrong. At the end of the day he provided 15.1 ppg and was a 37.6% three point shooter. I think Griffiths/Janowski and the increased volume for Williams can make up all that difference, and we'll be better defensively just by not having Keisei out there.

Absolutely will have to agree to disagree on that, I think they are both well above average shooters.

They’ve been decent players on marginal teams and role players on good teams.   If Janowski can’t match that, then what are we hoping for from him.

They would role players here on hopefully a real good team, exactly what we want. I hope Jano can do it too but those guys are experienced high level shooters in major conferences and we have plenty of room. Better safe than sorry, get talent here and go from there.

Not sure I agree on high level or on a real good team. Will agree that we have room.   But I’d be disappointed if Jano cant beat them out.

Essegian is a career 34.5% over 2 years. Hausen is 39.5%. Keisei was right in the middle at 37.4%.

They're all different players though. 45% of Keisei's made field goals this season were 3 pointers. He scores a ton at the basket and gets to the free throw line. 88% of Hausen's made field goals were 3s and he does not shoot free throws. He subs in, stands outside the arc and shoots 3s. Like CJ Wilcher but even less interested in going to the basket. Essegian barely played this year so going off last year, 52% of his made shots were 3 pointers, and he got to the free throw line a decent amount.

IMO, if you want a legit 3 point specialist to come off the bench, you go with Hausen. Essegian and Janowski are closer to the same type of player, but I think Janowski is better and I'd rather see him get those minutes.

Both Hausen and essegian would be filling a movement shooter role that departed with CJ and Keisei. Very comparable and honestly it's a toothpick difference.

Personally like Hausen quite a bit. He has some *shit* to his game I think. And I mean good shit. As far as janowskis role, beat one of those two OR ulis out for minutes. Ie, be rollies sub and trade off initiating offensive sets with Brice. He's going to be hard to keep out of the rotation though. I've said that for a while, and I'll continue to say that.

Hausen standing around the line is in a big part because of Novas offense. They pick the mismatches and everyone els spreads the floor. Might be why he is moving on.

i hope Jano is better than both and think he will be at some point. However I want to win now and not taking any chances if we don’t have to. We have room, let’s fill it up with proven guys and make a run
