You remember when Barry Collier was first hired? Remember how he answered questions in his first press conference about scheduling? And how, as a major conference school, he said we should try as much as possible to get mid-majors to play here? At our house? Rather than at their place? Like Creighton, for instance? Yeah. And you remember how the Creighton fans took that comment? Calling them a mid-major (which refers to their CONFERENCE!) was the worst kind of insult. OMG. They hated Barry Collier's guts for that one and never let it die. So, now that they've left the Mighty Mo Valley -- and have now been replaced in the Mo Valley by Loyola-Chicago -- what kind of tune are they singing? A different tune. Quite a different tune. Kind of tells you really how "mid-major" the valley is....It is too bad they could not get a better program to join. Sorry, not to keep chirping, but being mid-major actually made every game meaningful. When your league may only be a one-bid league, there is not much, if any room for mistakes (losses). Your goal had to be to win your conference or tournament. Even winning your conference didn't guarantee a bid if someone else rose up and won the conference tournament. It will seem weird possibly being third, fourth, or fifth in your league and still getting a bid. Being in the major conference that you guys are in, does it sometimes seem like your goal is just to settle for fifth or sixth place, because that could get you a bid? This is a serious question and not a knock against anybody.1 point -
We will be streaky early on. We have the talent to compete with a lot of teams on a lot of courts. But it is going to be streaky, especially early on. Going to take Miles some time to figure out what rotation gives him the best chance. More options and more guys that bring different skill sets than a year ago. Way more. So it is going to be a challenge for him to get it figured out. What gives us the best chance to win. Hopefully he finds the solution sooner than later.1 point

Even if he can give Ray 5-8 minutes off a game its worth it. It gives him some experience for next year and gives Ray a break he really needs each game. Even if he ends up being a star player you hope in 4 years NU is able to get star players to replace him on a regular basis.1 point -

I don't do it for a primary living, but I gamble a lot guys. An awful lot. You would be shocked about the amount of money you can sling around in Omaha. There are some pretty large outfits here. None of it out in the open of course. Of course, I make trips to Vegas quite often, too. Probably 4 or 5 times a year. I personally don't go offshore anymore. Right out of college, I did the whole offshore thing every day, pretty much for a job while I sorted out my career. It was great while it lasted, but as the government cracked down, you just got jerked around too much. I'm a very analytical when it comes to gambling. Stats, sabermetrics, algorithms etc. All about the process and odds. There is definitely a human element into it though, especially when predicting teams tanking and such. Like the Texans....I knew early on in the NFL season that they would tank their season. Not everyone is analytical though. I know an NFL guy who goes completely by gut and is an incredible gambler. Most guys I know are more like me though. Also, one thing that I have learned is gambling takes all bias out. I hated Tom Brady in high school...I would make friendly bets against him just because I rooted against him internally. It's kind of disappointing at times. I usually know when a Bo Pelini Nebraska team is going to take one on the chin. It's a money thing though, it's business. So you sit and watch Nebraska get slaughtered by Wisconsin with an empty feeling inside even though you cashed a big paycheck. It kind of sucks in a weird sort of way. Anyway, I don't claim to be a big shot, I still got legit things I do for income. I'm not good enough to live the lifestyle I want to live. Plus, when you have a young child, gambling for a living might not be a lifestyle you want to live. I just wanted to chime in on the subject. For the record, Creighton is soft and has been soft for quite some time. I'm not really trying to talk crap about Creighton here, I respect what you guys are doing and all that, but softness is like a disease. It's hard to get rid of and it has infected your program for quite some time now. Many programs have the same thing though. I also think Nebraska matches up really well with Creighton this year. Experience and home court are a pretty insurmountable advantage though. I would be willing to be that the NU-CU game is a lot closer than most people think. Thanks for listening....or reading.1 point -

Just my opinion but I think the day of red shirting are kind of over. It seems everybody thinks that they can come in and play right and don't want to wait a year. It also allows them to use that red shirt if they transfer, which seems to be what a bunch of players are doing. You can also use the red shirt if you have some type of surgery in the off season. I do think that football will still use red shirting more for guys to grow. Not just some of other sports as much.1 point -

But perimeter chucking disrupts offensive flow or doesn't allow any flow whatsoever and leads to 59-58 games. There is always goin to be a discrepancy in how the game is called on the perimeter versus the inside game. I have to respectfully disagree, a push on the back within the paint can disrupt the offensive flow as much as a perimeter cross-check. It is all a matter of perspective. For example, Andre could get pushed and pulled and hit last year, yet he would rarely get a call, but if he leaned on the opposing post player, he would get called. It led to subjective ref'ing at best. At least on the perimeter, guards could look for consistency in the calls. More often than not, the perimeter calls were made early, and then during the last ten to fifteen minutes, pretty much anything went. The NCAA can talk all they want about points of emphasis and so forth, but it comes down to individual refs making calls and staying consistent throughout the entire contest. I agree with CWG on all points. I also suspect we will see very little real changes when games actually begin. Sure, there may be a few statement calls early in games early in the year, but I doubt they will become a trend unfortunately. If they are really going to start calling all of these things as fouls, VCU and Shaka Smart will go by the wayside pretty quickly. Louisville and Pitino, to a lesser extent, will have to adjust their style as well. I think Smart's Havoc system is a joke as I can count multiple fouls on every single defensive possession as all VCU does is hack, push, swat, hand check, etc. I don't fault them as the refs have allowed them to play that way, but it seems to violate every letter of the law I have read and certainly isn't the same basketball that I grew up watching. We'll see if the refs really have the balls to call fouls against these types of programs.1 point -

Yeah, he does some of that, but his bread and butter is in his relentlessness, footwork and remarkable instincts to anticipate passing lanes and disrupt rhythm. He really doesn't do as much of the first two points as people think. That last one “You have to throw your hands and take contact with your torso,'' he said. “They want you to play defense with your feet.'' He does this exceptionally well.1 point -

I wasn't going to bump this derp-a-licious thread earlier, but since you did that today royal, I'll just go ahead and put this startling revelation from DoubleJay in that thread here: I'll be honest. I have a confession. I get it now. After not understanding for years, I've finally gotten a grasp on it. What is it? The attitude that fans of the power conference teams have regarding the noncons. They feel that noncon is just filler until the meat of the conference schedule. And, I begrudgingly admit that I now get it. In the past, I often felt that the multi team event tourneys were largely the highlight of the schedule. Sure, recently there was a Wichita St game to look forward to and I used to look forward to the SIU games when they were good. But other than those games, the rest of the conference schedule was a great big plate of blah. I felt that we were expected to win every other game and paid the price in terms of post season resume when we didn't win them all. Heck, I often felt that if we didn't completely dominate the noncon, our chances at getting to the NCAA tourney revolved entirely around St Louis. Now, for maybe the first time ever, I catch myself occasionally wishing that we could hurry up and get the noncon over so that we can start playing conference opponents. Georgetown. Marquette. Villanova. Really, every game other than perhaps Depaul has me pretty excited. Remember when DePaul was the highlight of our noncon schedule? That was only a couple of years ago!!!! We've come a long way. It is okay to admit it. It doesn't make you ungrateful; there is no need to feel guilty. It just means you appreciate what you have. If that pisses off the other Valley schools, so be it.1 point

Tony, I have really never cared for this NU-CU "rivalry." Back before the emergence of the internet message board, you could be a fan of both teams and not feel conflicted. I grew up a Husker fan but, many years ago, I lived in Omaha and enjoyed following both teams. Huskers moreso, but I followed both. And when I moved away from Omaha, I kept my subscription to the OWH and continued to enjoy following both teams. And then this Barry Collier thing happened. And that was my first introduction into the ugliness of the Nebraska-Creighton basketball rivalry. (It was also my first introduction to the existence of message board trolls.) The Creighton fans got their noses bent out of joint over a fairly innocuous comment that Collier made in one of his very first press conferences and they never let it go after that. And they would swarm the comment section of the OWH following stories about Nebraska losses and rub Husker fans' noses in whatever difficulty we were experiencing. You could try to say that Husker fans did it too, but that wouldn't be accurate for the most part because, while we were struggling against Big 12 teams under Collier, Altman's jays were usually making minced meat of the Mo Valley. Sad part is that it didn't simply infect the basketball community only when they were sitting behind a keyboard. It spilled over into the game environment. In six years of Barry Collier, we lost every single home game against Creighton. And every single one of those games, I had Creighton people sitting nearby taunting the Husker crowd with "How's THAT for 'mid-major.'" It's 5 years later and you're thinking, "Let it go already." So, to now see Creighton fans making comments about the Mo Valley being a "mid-major" (gasp, such an insult, mon dieu!), well, the dissonance is just jarring. Really? The same fanbase that nurtured a hatred of Barry Collier for describing the Mo Valley as a mid-major is now calling the Mo Valley a mid-major? Really?1 point -

Okay, its a slow day, so I'll play along. 1) Yes, you are opening a new arena. New arenas don't usually make teams better, but I get the excitement. I felt the same way when Creighton moved to the Qwest and again when they expanded the arena a couple of years later. 2) Yes, you've sold out the arena which is certainly a positive. I would suggest to you that Creighton will have at least as many season ticket holders as Nebraska this year though and CU's overall attendance will certainly be higher. Is it true that upper bowl tickets at your new arena were only $4 per game? If so, that is a remarkable bargain and if they couldn't sell out with that steal of a deal, they probably should have never moved the program out of Devaney. 3) You said, "Which team has had multiple articles written about them this summer by national writers?" For this one, I can only assume that you are more of a football fan that follows basketball secondarily. I say that because one would be hard pressed to find many articles this "summer by national writers" that did not mention Doug McDermott and Creighton. You may be getting more coverage than you did the past few years, but you are getting nowhere near the national publicity that Creighton is getting merely due to the fact that Creighton has a returning all-american and preseaon candidate for POY on its roster. 4) I don't know that I'd necessarily use the term "stole", but you did get him to come to Lincoln and it was a very big hire. Congratulations as I admit this was a big deal. By way of comparison, I'd point out that Creighton brought in a former assistant to the national championship UConn team under Jim Calhoun. Parties can obviously disagree as to which was the bigger hire, but a truly objective person would find it pretty hard to say that Nebraska's hire was overwhelmingly superior. 5) I haven't counted, but I will take your word for it as to the number of sweet sixteen participants that you have coming to your arena. I don't understand however, how that makes Nebraska a better team. It sounds more like you are boasting about the accomplishments of your opponents than about your own team's accomplishments. If you wish to compare however, depending how the MTE schedule turns out, Creighton could play 8 NCAA tourney teams from last year in just the noncon, with another several occurring in the conference schedule. Plus, Creighton knows that every Big East team will be playing in Omaha as the league has a double round robin schedule. I completely understand your enthusiasm. I do believe, however, you are letting preseason excitement, which comes in a time in which there are zero results yet, is causing you to make some hyperbolic statements. I suspect that those statements derive more from a certain ignorance about the state of the Creighton program rather than from a well researched analysis. Frankly, I think you worry too much about Creighton in your posts and really should focus more on your program itself. Either way, I wish you the best of luck this season (except for a certain game in Omaha, which will certainly be a sellout).1 point -
I do wish that the Jays do schedule at least one high mid-major team a year. I hope we don't forget how hard it was to try and schedule these games. And, I wouldn't mind playing some of them on there courts. Buck the system of what most majors do. 49r, thanks for posting "one" persons response from a thread above.-1 points
