Or Title 9 balancing? I had heard we needed more women on scholarship to balance the male female ratio required under Title 9.

I sure don't mean to indicate that she doesn't belong on the team. A big body who can rebound is always a good thing!

Could someone explain the NCAA rules regarding multisport athletes? If she is on scholarship for basketball but plays volleyball until the Big Ten basketball schedule begins (as the article implies), doesn't this seem like it is bending the rules. Seems to me the sport she is on scholarship for should be her primary sport, thus play the entire schedule, and any other sport would be secondary, thus the sport she would miss games for, when the seasons overlap.

If she is a walk on for basketball, then I can understand the volleyball schedule taking priority. The volleyball team should have scholarships open. Four girls have left the team since the end of this past season.

Either way, welcome aboard.

She will be a great add to the team.....very athletic.....and super experienced at big time college athletics. :D

The atmosphere won't bother her at all. Wasn't she co-captain of the volleyball team?

Big tough insider that can leap and rebound !  That alone will be huge.

"in her high school career, she had 10 games with 20 or more rebounds and her career high was 30. She finished her career with 994 total rebounds." (and averaged 18 ppg)

But she hasn't been playing basket ball consistently.... recently. Will have to get up to speed on the court.

Great add if only for a year. Will help Shepard with another big to fill in time as needed

Her bio says that she also had 15 blocks in a game, But she did come from Gordon/Rushville. so being 6'3" inches in that small of school would be like being a 7 footer in A ball.

I'm not sure how much she can help with limited playing time and dedication to basketball.  It will be extremely difficult to transition to D-1 BB.  She is a good athlete and seems to have a wonderful attitude.  Hope it works out for all involved.

I agree Cazzie, the conditioning will be a big issue in my book.

while i welcome a special athlete, when a person has not concentrated on the sport for, what, over 4 years(?), you really do have to wonder just how much she can contribute. i guess i am mirroring what Cazzie22 stated in that post---i, too, hope it all works out for all involved.

Alicia Ostrander was selected for the U.S. collegiate national team that will compete in the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships from June 21-29 in New Orleans, so she will miss some time this summer with the Bball team.

Anyone know when she leaves to practice with the national team?

maybe someone that knows the history of the women's game can help with a question: are there any examples out there where an athlete (women's) has participated in her primary sport for 4 yrs and stepped in and made a contribution participating in another sport with her 5th yr? re: wbb

not trying to stir anything up, i just remain cautiously optimistic. playing DI wbb is a different animal---especially when you haven't played (wbb) at this level. i do believe her joining the team is a "win/win" situation for all, but, i guess we'll just have to wait and see how things develop. like some others have stated, if she does contribute, it will be on the defensive side of the ball (and, obviously, on the practice floor).

it's fantastic what she has accomplished in the sport of volleyball!!! congratulations to her and wish her and the husker volleyball team the best in the upcoming season! GBR!

I'm wondering the same thing.  Being an experienced and successful college athlete, she will provide some leadership to this young squad.  She definitely has the work ethic to be successful, it's just a matter of how much of an impact she can make in one short year off the bench.  And if we wind up having foot-drama again, we will need someone that can give us some decent minutes.  She will certainly be a crowd favorite, and possibly a nightmare to a few Big10 teams since they are not familiar with her as a basketball player.

I think playing WBB will be a different animal but I don't think she will have the intentions of scoring much. But I really do think she could make a difference on the defensive end in the paint. She just has that attitude kind of like Kiah Stokes did for UCONN where she just loves the sport and will do what ever is best for the team. I am kind of excited to see what she can do in Basketball. I feel like she could be good at any sport she tried. She may not be the best at any sport but I think she is good at any sport.

I totally agree.  She has proven that she can tackle obstacles and conquer them.  Take being a walk-on in VB and then working hard to become a valuable contributor on a top 5 volleyball program.  Her leadership will be invaluable to the team during the Big 10 especially to the 3 young post's we will have.  Even if she only plays a few minutes per game she will help us in match ups and  give us depth when we have foul or injury situations.  I don't think Connie would have her join the team if there wasn't the potential to help in some way.

I find it hard to believe these coaches haven't seen her play against players on the roster. Do we really think this staff would burn a scholarship on something unknown?

I don't think so. Connie Yori and co. are no fools. I'm biased, but still believe I'm right. Ostrander is more than a practice player.

i wouldn't classify this as "burning" a schollie, just to get the record straight. i believe when you look at the incoming class along with the current players, coach Yori had a bit of a luxury to do this. at this time in the program, why not? i am sure this was well thought out by coach Yori. she will have that schollie after this season. just kind of explains it right there.

as far as the "foot-drama" mentioned by huskerchode, i would really be surprised if this pops up---especially with the magnitude it did last season. either coach yori and the staff concluded it was just an unfortunate coincidence it happened to so many, or, they have/will make some adjustments to help prevent this from happening again.

I will confess - I do not follow volleyball much at all, so I really didn't know anything about this young lady.  However, after reading all the comments and the article above, I think this woman, this COMPETITOR, can come in and have a very positive impact this season.  Hey, maybe this could start a trend of senior VB players joining the basketball team once VB season is over.  I know at least one of those Rolfzen twins was a decent basketball player.
