I think its 50/50 either way... they either leave or they dont right? ;).  In all seriousness thoughI think there is an 80 percent chance that one player leaves.  Sergej is probably as you said 50/50.  Parker and Rivers IMO are less than 20.  Menke or someone like Kye I feel will be the ones who transfer.

Neither Menke nor Kye have any impact on scholarship numbers.

Actually if I remember right, Menke does have a scholarship...

Yes, but I assume he was offered a schollie for only one year. He will not be on scholarship next year.

My point in him transfering.

First of all, I doubt he transfers. He was a walk on to begin with and will be a walk on again. The one year scholarship was simply a matter of an extra schollie being utilized by a good kid, not because he deserves it for his play. I understood your point to be that his transfer will open a scholarship. Whether or not he transfers next year, he will not be on schoarship. He knew it was a one year only thing when he recieved the scholarship. Kye has never been on scholarship and never will be.

Let's just say I hope that we have the ability to sign far better players in the fall of 2013 (for the 2014 class) than what appears to be available for 2013.  Atewe has impressive athleticism and good size.  But he's really raw.   He's not going to come in next year be a starter let alone be a star.  He isn't going to hang with Minnesota's bigs next year.  Or Illinois' or Ohio State's.  He's raw.  It's going to take some time for him to develop.

At this point, we don't appear to have better options for bigs in this class. I hope to hell we have better options for bigs in 2014.  If we're still picking up scraps in next year's class, I would say that doesn't bode well for Miles' tenure here.  I'm hoping that there will be better players still available for next year's class than there are for this year and, with that thought in mind, it's not going to make me lose any sleep if Atewe decides to go to Clemson.  Or whoever else gets in on him before he makes his college choice.

The kid doesn't even start for his own prep school.  It's not like he's going to be able to come in here and be the answer for us on the inside from day one.  Assuming he signs with us, I give him better odds of being in the rotation than Vucetic, but not by a long shot.  He's raw.  If we sign him, we do so with the expectation that he's going to be awhile developing.  But don't paint this kid as a player.  He's not.  He's raw.  Splendid athlete.  But raw.

Kevin Thomas seems like a better option. 10 pts and 14 rebs in his last game, and his team is 24-1. He can only play for 2 years, but I do not see Atewe playing much in his first 2 years anyways. Thomas had better offers in high school and would give NU a better chance at making the ncaa tourney the next 2 years.

Norm I think it has more to do with a prep school that tries to get as many players as it can with talent but doesnt "recruit" to any specific type of offense.  Plenty of prep school kids in the NE tend to not put up similar numbers they might at another HS because they arent a focal point or the right fit.  Atewe was good enough to start for Canada's national U-19 team.  I dont think he'd even be on the team if he wasnt good.  I mean he started around guys going to Syracuse, Florida State, Indiana, and possibly Kentucky.  Give him a chance to grow in a program that will develop him and you'll see why he has garnered 30+ offers.

Gotta have something on the ball if that's his list of schools.  Wouldn't have that list of offers if he wasn't a solid prospect.

Except, well, Shang Ping was offered by us and Okie State too.  Hmmm.

I still think there must be something there and that the coaches are looking at his down-the-road potential.  Ping was a 2 year player and Atewe would be a 4 year kid.

For some Monday morning levity, here's a quote from Shang Ping's Juco Coach that is preserved for posterity by an Okie St. Rivals article back in September of 2006:

"Shang Ping was born to play hoops. Both his mother and father played for the Chinese national team and he's been playing the game all of his life.  'He's perhaps the most skilled big guy I've seen,' Illinois Central CC Assistant Coach Fred Dickson said. 'We play him at the four and five, but he's really a three man. But he can post up and he is very tough minded.'"

Just to bring this further off topic

2008-09 Went to Emporia State after Nebraska - played in an exhibition game against KSU as well

Averaged 14 minutes and 5.2 ppg and 3.3 rebounds per game.  Shot a horrific 37.1% from the free throw line.

Interview here.  Went to Emporia to get more playing time.

2010 - He was in a training video featuring Ron Artest and Paul Pierce that looked like it was marketed towards Chinese players.

The lead singer of Linkin Park is also working out there because of course he is.

In between he's been on a few Chinese basketball rosters.  I'm unsure of the level of play there.

He's currently playing basketball in China with Tracy McGrady.  For real.

Back on topic, the surprising thing about Atewe's list is that it's six schools instead of five.  Thought he was going to nail it down to five schools.

Would you feel that way if he narrowed his list to five and we weren't on it?

he probably narrowed it down to 5, but then clemson offered. He probably doesn't know enough about clemson to leave them off, so he added them to the 5.

Well, for one thing, Clemson has those ugly orange uniforms and they play in an absolute dump.  It's a slightly warmer climate than Nebraska but the people there have an annoying way of calling people "y'all."  And they drink sweetened tea.  By default.  If you wanted iced tea at a restaurant there, you have to tell them not the sweet kind.

And they think the arctic tundra begins 50 miles north of the Mason-Dixon line.  So, Canada to them is like the North Pole with bad whiskey.  And did I mention the snake handler people that live in South Carolina?  When Bill Callahan called the people of Oklahoma hillbillies, he had the people of South Carolina in mind.

Other than that, it's a beautiful state.  If you can tolerate the humidity.  And if you like pawn shops.

So, there you have it.   A little primer on South Carolina for Mr. Atewe if he's not familiar with the place.

Absolutely.  If we're #6 on the list and aren't going to land him, knowing this ASAP is essential for us to go after plan C.

You forgot the kudzu, Norm.  Kudzu everywhere killing trees.  And the highways littered with billboards, mostly advertising pawn shops like you said, the rest are for strip clubs.  That is, the ones that aren't overcome by kudzu.

Classy state, South Carolina...

Oh, yeah, the Kudzu.  And the strippers.  Covered with Kudzu.  Them Kudzu vines grow straight up the stripper poles in South Carolina and right onto the strippers.  Leaves a lot for the imagination what with everything covered with Kudzu.  Beautiful state.  If you don't mind the Kudzu.  And the humidity.

my friend in CT finally made it out to see Notre Dame Prep this past week.  He attends roughly 25-30 prep schools games in New England each winter to see some of the best of the best high school players.  He saw Atewe last year and I asked him what his thoughts were on him seeing him a year later.

He says physically he is the poor mans Dwight Howard.  He said at 6'9'' his body is very developed muscularly and looks the part of a big man.  He says unfortunately as of yet it isnt showing on the court.  He said ND doesnt run the best offense in the world and it does focus more on the guards but said MA tends to get lost down low.  He said MA does not do a great job of creating space for himself to get open looks. Defensively he said he's much better but again needs to use his body to his advantage to impose his will on players as he tended to let the ball get in to the offensive player when he could have easily gotten a good front on them. He felt at this point he is easily a BCS level player defensively but offensively he looks like a mid major player.

Just thought I'd pass along some thoughts from a huge HS hoops enthusiast.

I think it's 50/50 whether Sergej hangs around. 25% chance Parker leaves. 20% with Rivers.

Probably about a 60% chance one player leaves.

More than a week late, but my math background is freaking out about this post. If your first three percentages are correct, and the probability of each player leaving is independent of each other (debatable), then the probability that at least one player leaves is actually 70%.

1 - (0.5 * 0.75 * 0.80) = .7 or 70%

Unless things have changed in the year since I've spoken to his father, I doubt Menke is going anywhere.  He had plenty of lower-level offers coming out of high school and wasn't interested in the least.  He wanted the challenge of playing D-1.  I'm guessing he still does.

Posted

Doesn't matter if Menke stays or not as Miles can pull and use his scholarship anytime he needs to.  I don't see Menke leaving unless he wants to go somewhere else to try and play but think he will stay here.  I don't blame him as I wouldn't leave either.  Still alot of perks being a D1 athlete at Nebraska.

Somebody have a rivals account to see what this says?

Here's the latest on 2013 #Nebrasketball recruit Matthew Atewe ($$$) http://nebraska.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?fid=522&tid=162638415&mid=162638415&sid=928&style=2 …

basically he is focusing on watching his final 6 and how they use their big men.  Wants to go to a place that focuses more on man to man defense as he struggles and doesnt enjoy zone.  He is more looking for a good fit with the coaches than necessarily the prestige of the school.  Still planning on using final 2 visits before March 7 announcement.
