Sorry to vent when everything is going well for these two programs right now but I'm beginning to get a little irritated with those people who are apparently only fans of the Husker women and not the Husker men.  You people are starting to act like Creighton fans.  Get over yourselves.

The last several weeks in the letters to the editor in the paper version of the Lincoln paper, there've been a number of letters from people complaining about the lack of emphasis in coverage of the women's team compared to the men's team.  The women win a championship on the day the men beat Wisconsin and the coverage in the paper places more importance on the men's win than the women's.  Apparently.  Or so went the gripe from a few letter writers.

Then, today, we have the champion of letter-writing stupidity, Gene Hammack.  He writes:

"The men's basketball team, just like the football team, showed their true colors by blowing an18-point lead and losing in the first round of the Big Ten tournament.  Did not the women's team win the Big Ten tournament?  Before we give Tim Miles the moon, maybe we should wait until he earns it.  At least the women's team is a real winner.  The men are a bubble team at best."

Gene, if you read this blog, please STFU.

More on this later but for now, Go Big Red (both squads)!!!

A couple fans are feeling all bleeding-heart, holier-than-thou, butt-hurt because fans, students and everyone in general doesn't support the ladies like they did the men this year. It's just really hard to make women's basketball cool/hip for most people. Most just don't care about Husker women's sport, unless it's volleyball. Including female fans.

If Connie were to build it up good enough to win a NCAA title and contend for a couple more, it will happen.

I'll be here watching either way. GBR!

Everyone likes a winner.

Well it's not like she isn't winning, The crowds have been growing ever so slowly for WBB. They ave. over 5500 a game better than some years on the men's side of things.

For the record..this is the opinion from Mr. Hammack, and again this is one of two similar "opinions" that appeared:

The men's basketball team, just like the football team, showed its true colors by blowing an 18-point lead and losing in the first round of the Big Ten tournament. Did not the women's team win the Big Ten tournament?

Before we give Coach Tim Miles the moon, maybe we should wait until he earns it. At least the women's team is the real winner. The men are a bubble team at best.

True. It can, and I think will, continue to grow. Just not zero to speedometer pegged like the men's support did. It'll take National Title-type years to do that for women's hoops. That was my (poorly written) point.

*I edited out the "everyone likes a winner" line in my post. Not needed, distorted my point (I think).

To take the point that Gene is trying to make IMHO a little farther. For instance when The field of 64 were announced CBS went through each team where on ESPN it was like they didn't really want to be doing the show. they would do one region all at once, Instead of each team. That was very poorly done on espn's part. Maybe CBS needs to take it over. It to me the women in all sports take second fiddle to the men. But I also realize that the men pay the bills for the women

Yes, the women's field of 64 show was really poorly done. CBS did a fantastic job on the men's side.

The cool thing is that I believe that there's two women's sports that COULD eventually remain profitable at Nebraska. Maybe the volleyball team already was? If the women's volleyball team was able to be profitable this last fall, they'd join Hawaii as the only other volleyball program able to do this. Think about how long it's taken for them, and the amount of success/support it took for that to happen.

I'd be willing to bet that if Nebraska were eventually able to get two women's programs in the black, Nebraska would be the only school in the NCAA to do so.

A bit OT with the VB references, but I believe it speaks to Husker fans willingness to support women's sport.

I know of this clown Norm and your analogy of him is pretty dead on.  Can you say jaySker?  He works at Walmart and he's a huge McDermitt fan and will tell anyone that will listen to him about him. Not sure what to do with fans like him. I don't associate with him.

I believe everyone who posts on the women's forum here is a fan of all sports at Nebraska. At least I hope they are.

Nebraska averaged 6,100 fans per home game this year, and that was under some crazy start times (like 6 p.m. on a Monday or during the AFC Championship instead of 7 p.m. on a Friday for volleyball).

The fans are already there.

Yes, the women's games have pretty good attendance. Especially if you compare it to women's games nationally. I believe the Huskers are in the top 20 in attendance.

My point was to compare it to another Husker women's sport (volleyball) and Huskers men's basketball. Volleyball was a sell out all season (and led the nation in attendance) and so were men's basketball games (sell out). Is it possible to catch mighty Iowa State and Tennessee? I think so.

Somebody help me with the attendance numbers. Does Nebraska count butts in seats as opposed to tickets sold? Don't some of the schools that claim high attendance actually just count tickets sold (which could be a package deal with men's basketball) but usually only have several hundred in attendance?

Posted

Nebraska counts butts in the seats unlike a few other teams that use creative head counts then brag about their attendance figures. We are looking at you Purdue, Wisconsin, Iowa State Texas Tech and others.

Very valid point. Purdue reports 8.5k per game (7th nationally). I'm watching their first round NCAA tournament game vs. Akron right now and there's maybe 6k. Probably closer to 5k.

Pretty impressive that Nebraska fans rank in the top 20 of Div. 1 attendance for football, men's & women's basketball, and volleyball (#1). And, for the continued support to occur in a state that is sparsely populated makes it even more special (also note the Bluejay men's hoops in the big O is top 10 too). GO NEBRASKA!
