Yikes...DePaul thumped Creighton at home.

The Jays haven't won since Dec 19th.  Still wondering how we managed to lose at home to the worst Jays team in perhaps a decade.

I still have nightmares about that!!!

Cincy went on the road & gave UConn a good run this morning, tight the whole way till late, but they've suffered their first AAC loss, 62-56

And after a slow start Indiana looking good at home vs Oh St on ESPN, leading 32-26 at half. Plus Crean managed to not get caught on camera telling anyone from Oh St to shut up, so that's improvement. I'm not saying he didn't tell a Buckeye to shut up, but he did manage not to get caught.  ;)

We play Wisconsin, Ohio St, and Maryland on the road.  Winning one of those would be huge for our resume.

We also play Penn St, Purdue, Michigan, Minnesota, and Illinois on the road. We probably need a couple of these as well.

Absolutely right - plenty of opportunities to bolster the resume.

Not sure what it means, or if it means anything, ;) but maybe our B1G schedule so far hasn't been too bad:

  • Indiana now 3-1 in conf play, tied for 1st
  • Iowa now 3-1 in conf play, tied for 1st (with 2 road wins)
  • Rutgers 2-2 in conf play, tied for 8th - beat then-#4 Wisconsin in next game after losing to NU
  • Illinois 1-3 in conf play, 12th - beat then-#9 Maryland in preceding game before losing to NU
  • NU's two conf wins both by double digits, led entire 2nd half in both
  • NU's two conf losses, had a 2nd half lead in both

The latter half of our league schedule will be very tough, but the opening portion hasn't been easy either, other than getting 3 of the first 4 at home.

Indiana steals another road win, 80-74 at Illinois

The 3 conf teams that have beaten us are now 12-3 in league play. Our next six opponents in league play (3 each at home and on road) are:

  • 1-5
  • 3-2
  • 4-2
  • 1-5
  • 1-4
  • 0-5

Combined 10-23 - time for NU to make a surge!

Then last 7 opponents (3 at home, 4 on the road) are

  • 4-1
  • 3-2
  • 5-1
  • 4-1
  • 3-3
  • 2-4
  • 5-1

Combined 26-13 - so we can put ourselves in position with a strong next 6 games and then potentially have a few opportunities for the kinds of wins that turn the committee members' heads over the last 7.

There's no reason we can't go at least 4-2 in the next 6 games. 6-5 still wouldn't be stellar, but there would be 7 more opportunities after that to improve our conference record.

Of next 8 games, 7 are coin flips at worst, the other is Wisconsin. Season defining stretch coming up.

Agreed - need to get a bunch of wins the next few weeks. We can't make the NCAA tournament the next few weeks, but we'll either put ourselves in contention for the stretch run or we'll play ourselves out of it. As long as we put ourselves in contention in the next 6, then we can earn the bid with a few big wins in the last 7. Just hope we have enough energy in the tank for all of those road trips coming up.

I'm thinking 5-1 over the next 6 is a minimum we need to get on the NCAA at-large radar. That'd include 2 road wins and a perfect home record in that stretch. Not easy.

Then probably 4-3 over the last 7 - that would give us at least one road win down the stretch, as well as probably a really big win or two with 3 games vs Wisky & Maryland in that stretch. Again not easy. But neither was what NU did down the stretch last season.

That'd get us to 11-7 in the B1G, but this year we may also need that 1st-round B1G win to get on the right side of the bubble to make up for the non-con hiccups and a slightly weaker/more muddled B1G versus last season. We certainly have made things tough on ourselves with a few of the results in December, but there's still time to make up for it. We just need a lot of things to go right, starting now.

Anything less than 5-1 in the next 6 and it's going to require a few improbable upsets in the final 7 games and/or in the B1G tourney.

It's fun to look ahead & project, but hopefully the team is fully honed in on Tuesday and the Gophers - all we have to do is fall back on our superior intelligence and superior firepower to defeat the Varmint Cong!  ;)

Another tough loss on the road last night. Thought they had a shot late to win - again - but they kicked it away - again.

How many losses in a row is that? 6? 7? 8?

When was the last time a team went 0-fer in league play? They could be well on their way. They just look like a program whose coach and players are overmatched at a tougher level.

Can't say I feel bad for them. Painful loss after painful loss after painful loss couldn't happen to a better fan base. Hopefully 0-18 is on the way.

I feel for Pat Chambers a little bit.  He seems like a pretty decent fella.  But man, if you think *we* used to be negligent towards the hoops program during the Collier/Sadler years, you should see just how pathetic the PSU support for hoops is:

Penn State basketball has enough problems without bumbling management of Jordan Center

Interesting story on PSU - I do feel bad for the coaches/players when they're caught in something like that.

They really hung around at MSU last night till the 5-min mark. MSU got called for its 7th foul to put PSU in the bonus at that time, and PSU had only 4 or 5 fouls, so you knew what was coming next. Two fouls on PSU on defense, MSU eventually scores in the possession to go up 2. Then an illegal screen on PSU's next possession right before the under-4 media timeout. MSU in the bonus. All close calls.

Chambers went ballistic during the commercial break. Technical foul. MSU hits one FT to go up 3 and then nails a 3-pt shot to go up 6. Basically, game over, although PSU fought till the end.

The life of a have not when playing at the home of a blue blood. And it's not limited to the B1G.

I've been very surprised watching MSU the past two weeks how much they struggle inside. They miss Payne a bunch. Great 3-pt shooting team, although they were bad from beyond the arc at Maryland. And not a great FT shooting team - with our loose rims and poorly inflated adidas basketballs, we should give them a lot of problems with FTs. ;)

If we can stop them in transition, which we've been great at doing, especially at home, I love our chances Saturday. Can't have turnovers that fuel their running game.
