Well, we knew we weren't going undefeated.

- The officiating was a mess.  Just going to get that out of the way.

- Davison said on the post game that the refs for the second game thought the officiating was ridiculous, FWIW.

- That said, we were pretty lazy defensively, especially on the perimeter. That put Pitchford and Co. in a bad spot by the time Williams or Gordon turned the corner, there really wasn't much that could be done at that point.

- They didn't defend the rim at all and there were times I wondered if I was watching Kansas with how aggressively the Minutemen pushed the ball.  Seemed like a layup drill at times.

- Post depth got exposed today. Smith played well, but Pitchford got pushed around.  Need to figure out how to better clean the glass, though the final total wasn't as bad as I expected (42-37).

- Smith, I think did play well, aside from the time he brought the ball up the court.  Finished with a double double off the bench. He's been a nice little surprise.

- Credit UMass for playing to how they were calling the game.  NU tried to at times, but couldn't quite pull it off.

- NU struggled with UMass' athleticism on the perimeter at times.

- In a 4 point game, little things matter big time. Huskers gave away a possession at the end of the half and a couple at the start of the second.  Rivers has to find a way to finish that layup at the end to cut the game to 1.

- To NU's credit, they could have packed it in a handful of times today and didn't.  They've got some ability to score and need to tighten up some screws and they'll be in pretty good shape.

- Webster's still swimming at this level.  Made a few plays down the stretch, but he needs to be a better presence throughout the course of the game.

- Petteway is going to a boom or bust guy all season.  When he's going well, he's going to be the best player on the floor.  When he's not, it's not going to be pretty.  We've got a couple of guys like that (Biggs, Gallegos, maybe Pitchford, too).

- Hope Gallegos isn't hurt too badly. Could have really used him as this game came to an end.

- We've been pretty good at taking care of the ball so far this year.  In a game like this 13 isn't terrible.

- Did a little better at the line today.

- Man, I want to see how this game would have been different if Shields, Pitchford and Petteway weren't in foul trouble the whole game.

Downside:  It may take a bit before this team is meshing on the floor and firing on all cylinders.  Miles has his work cut out.

Upside:  Despite how choppy a game we played and fouling nearly everyone out, we still managed to score a bucketload of points.

We're at least 1 big man away. Smith is our only post player with a pulse and his knees could give out at any time.

This will be our downfall come B1G play.

We have 9-10 usable players...let's adopt the Grinnell offense.   The shorter the possession the better.  Anti- Doc theory.

We should leave charleston with a 5-1 record now

Assuming UAB loses we should be favored but it won't be a cakewalk.

Seems about right their only big man is Fahro.

We have a young team and overall look like were on a good trajectory.  As Royalsfan noted earlier, these guys have scoring ability and the rest can come with coaching and time.  Last year this is one of those games where we fade in the last 4 minutes and lose by 10+.

- There is a lot of hand-ringing about Petteway but do you remember the last two years when we would have given anything for a guy who could slash to the rim?  At times he absolutely carried this team. Look for him to battle Pitch for most over-criticized Husker this year.

- Pitchford is running into the same problem as Ray last year: It's magnifies the parts of his game that need work....interior defense.  If we had 2-3 more Leslie Smiths, we probably could defend taller guards.  BTW, if this team loses Leslie Smith it's in big trouble.

- Those shots weren't falling today for Biggs but they also weren't getting blocked.

- Shavon had a frustrating game.  He'll bounce back.

- Rey Gallegos doesn't draw contact on either side of the ball.  He doesn't get to the foul line but he also doesn't foul out so he's always there to take a shot....unless he gets injured.  We don't need 35 minutes of Rey Gallegos this year but we definitely need his shooting ability at the end of games like this.  Hopefully his injury is not serious.

- David Rivers was quietly big for us today.  Bench depth is a big deal this year.

- How tempting will it be to burn Fuller's redshirt?

If we had one more big guy that could defend, we probably win todays game. It's not a good feeling knowing we have an open scholarship that we never used, and we have a 7'1 scholarship guy that can't play a minute. I don't think miles was kidding when he said we are one big away.

This is another game where I thought Serg should have at least gotten a few minutes to see what he could do.  Why not?  We weren't stopping anything anyway, and everyone was in foul trouble.

Put Serg in the game and tell him to just stand under the hoop and put his hands up.  At least they would have to shoot over him.  And, as someone has pointed out already, with how soft the refs were calling things, it really diminishes his disadvantage of not being strong enough yet.
