royalfan Posted November 1, 2012 Report Posted November 1, 2012 Hope he plays but I don't think he will be. Can understand it from all angles. Quote
nustudent Posted November 2, 2012 Report Posted November 2, 2012 Hoping for a redshirt. We are going to be bad regardless. Redshirt him and build for the future. If Webster beats him out...so be it...we are better off for it the next two years. We've been bad for too long and it's not changing this year. Don't throw a year away of a potential starter/contributor down the road from teams with potential. Quote
royalfan Posted November 2, 2012 Report Posted November 2, 2012 Completely disagree. Way better off trying to save face to help with recruiting and clearing the scholarship. Very surprised you would view it differently. Odd. Quote
tcp Posted November 2, 2012 Report Posted November 2, 2012 I find myself thinking about the players that this kind of thing screws over, ie., the ones that have to go play on the sacrificial altar of a surrendered season. Imagine walking into a season knowing your team's best players aren't even suiting up, even if most of the reasons are obviously transfer rules issues. But the one guy that *can* come help out doesn't because he thinks, unlike the rest of the lambs, that he should have a shot at a better team has to be hard. That's just my personality, though. If my teammates could use me and I'm actually available, then I go regardless of what that might mean for me personally. Must be getting old... Norm Peterson 1 Quote

Very surprised you would view it differently. Odd. I don't know how much it would help with recruiting. Playing Biggs this year isn't going to change the fact that this is a cellar-level team. The team's record will stink regardless. Miles will have no problem playing the, "This isn't my roster. I need you to help this program." card to recruits. Quote

Very surprised you would view it differently. Odd. I view it as potential down the line. Let's be honest....we are going to be bad this year regardless of what happens. If Biggs plays...maybe we win 12-13 games instead of 10-11. Redshirting allows Biggs to get time in the system build experience and that could payoff down the line. There's certainly a chance it doesn't. But there's also a chance he can have an impact on us the next two years where a couple game difference could actually mean something. Everyone knows this is a transition year. Why waste a year of eligibility on a seemingly talented player during one. Quote

Everyone knows this is a transition year. Why waste a year of eligibility on a seemingly talented player during one. Could NOT have said it better than this. We all know this year is tough. Can you imagine if Biggs plays this year, then plays really well next year how many of us would be saying "Man, it sure would be nice to have Biggs one more year with Parker, Shields, Petteway, Pitchford, Webster, etc.....?" Why waste him this year. We need to suck it up, know this year will be tough and move on. I think this was one of Doc's biggest issues was he tried to fill too many pieces early and it ended up back firing. BE PATIENT with Miles, probably take our lumps this year but BUILD for the future which is what he is good at (at least in his other stops). Quote
royalfan Posted November 3, 2012 Report Posted November 3, 2012 disagree as Biggs is capable enough to let us run things more how we want to down the road. Much easier to recruit when they have a picture of what things might look like. The better we play, the easier it is to recruit. Kidding yourself to think otherwise. Quote
HB Posted November 3, 2012 Report Posted November 3, 2012 I think both sides of this debate make good points, but Miles is in the best position to know how good Biggs is for this level. He is no doubt an ahtlete, and his sheer athleticism would help us in some games against the 200 and lower RPI games on the schedule (we could definitely drop one or more of those games with this roster; perhaps less of a chance if Biggs plays). I'm not sure his outside shot and ball handling translate to upper level Big 10 point guard play. After a month of practice, I would think Miles knows what he has. If he plays, it would perhaps be a subtle statement that in addition to making us a LITTLE more competitive this year, he thinks he will recruit or has recruited enough of a better player(s) that we don't need to preserve an extra year for Biggs. If Akoy sticks with his verbal to Louisville, my guess if Biggs plays. If he doesn't, it could be because Biggs has been coming on in practice and Miles wants to save a year due to the obvious problems facing us this year anyway; or, just simply because Biggs insists on redshirting and Miles keeps his word to him that he could redshirt. MIles isn't dumb; he understands it's not worth wasting a year with Biggs if he is a really solid player and will help us a bunch down the road. I defer to the coach on this one, but if Biggs plays, it won't be because Miles thinks it will really help us this year. Quote

I'd agree in general that the better we play, the easier it is to recruit. I just have doubts as to how big of an impact he could have this year. I think he's likely the best option for us...but we'll be bad with or without him, especially in conference play. Quote
Busch Light Posted November 4, 2012 Report Posted November 4, 2012 You play to win the game. If I'm Miles, I stop just short of forcing Biggs to play. At the end of the day though, you have to respect the decision of the kid. hhcmatt 1 Quote
FredsSlacks Posted November 4, 2012 Report Posted November 4, 2012 What day do you think we will know for sure? I really hope he plays this year. There are only 8 scholarship players that can play this year if biggs redshirts. I know this year likely will be bad, but I'd feel a lot better about NU's chances if there were 9 scholarship kids in the rotation. I do not see Biggs being much more than a solid contributor anyways. Miles has already announced that Parker is who he would start right now. I think Miles said that to give a hint to Biggs that he should play now because Parker will be the starter in the future. Taking a year off will not help Biggs because Parker will have a full year of experience after this year. Next year Biggs will have to compete with parker, webster, hawkins, and gallegos. I think Miles will play Biggs as much as he can against Midland to try and convince him to play this year. Quote

uneblinstu Posted November 4, 2012 Report Posted November 4, 2012 Barring a rash of injuries, we should know this time next week plus a few hours. Maybe another week, but not beyond that. You're sacrificing too many games in what will already be a short career for Biggs by sitting and waiting to see what Agau does, especially when it's unlikely that he'll switch in the first place. If he hasn't played after the Valpo game, he's not going to. Quote
Creighton Fan Posted November 5, 2012 Report Posted November 5, 2012 I think Miles will play Biggs as much as he can against Midland to try and convince him to play this year. I thought that unless you are a freshman, if you play in an exhibition, you can not redshirt. Anyone else ever hear the rule this way? Quote

uneblinstu Posted November 5, 2012 Report Posted November 5, 2012 Redshirt it is. Brian Rosenthal @HuskerExtraBR Miles also says decision to redshirt Deverell Biggs is final. Could play in exhibition against Midland. Quote

uneblinstu Posted November 5, 2012 Report Posted November 5, 2012 Just an AP story that probably got included on a generic feed. Twitter had it almost as soon as Miles said it... Quote

uneblinstu Posted November 6, 2012 Report Posted November 6, 2012 It's any incoming player. Thus, we'll see some Biggs on Wednesday. I actually thought it was more similar to what CF described. Maybe it was transfer players like Pettaway and Pitchford. Or maybe I'm just off on this one... Quote
