It's interesting about Fuller, because despite his poor night from the field, he still found a way to score points.  He got to the line 8 times, making six of them.  That bodes well.  He'll play better as he gets more experience.

it is a little funny that people are slightly bashing an 18 year old after having 10 points and 6 rebounds in his first game.

I guess it was UNK though and of course i didn't see the game.

I dont know about bashing, but I think it bodes well for Fuller that people think highly of him.  We will know a lot more about each player and this team in 4 days.  This WILL be a fun season either way!

Fuller had the deer in the head lights look a little bit. But his stroke at the line was pure, so it is there he will find it. We will be very sad to see him graduate in 4 or 5 years.

He also did other things well. Nice reverse lay up and had a good put back. His three attempts weren't a thing of beauty but he did get 10 and 6. If you didn't see the three point shots you would have thought things went well for him.

AND WE GOT RUNZAS DAMN IT, THAT IS WHAT IS IMPORTANT YOU KNOW. ;)

I'd like to see both Nick and Nathan redshirt.   If we could pull that off without hurting our team this year, it would be big.

I wasn't too disappointed in the point of emphasis hand-checking stuff.   It was interesting watching our guys really trying to move their feet and trying to not use the hands.

A little disappointed in the stat displays....shows percentages, but not totals.   And the individual player stuff only shows points and fouls.

looking at the box score: http://journalstar.com/unk-nu-men-s-box/pdf_93790b9c-7960-5738-954d-1dd8ee340c9e.html

Benny parker had more rebounds than Pitchford?

going to be crucial for webster to get those turnovers lowered.

Webster brings so much to the table, we might have to live with a few turnovers from time to time.  Also, Parker played 9 more minutes than Pitchford and UNK jacked up quite a few 3's.  There were quite a few long rebounds to be had.

Some positive stats I saw...

- 71% from the line... going to need to keep that up there near 75 to 80 with all the fouls this year

- We allowed no second chance or fast break points!  2nd chance is great to hear.

- Parker played the most minutes which tells me we could have probably hit the big 100, and probably blown them out of the water.

- Pitchford can keep chucking if he hits 50 percent from downtown all year... did not seem like he was 3 for 6

- Fuller had most rebounds with 6, but everyone chiped in which will be key!

- Only 8 TO's is nice, but 4 of those were by Tai which is great I think because he is a Freshman, and  those will lower through the year.

- With the low minutes, saw a lot of fouls... which I guess we will have to live with this year.

I think I might spend a fair amount of this season wishing Pitchford were a different style of player.  He looks good from the perimeter and will create some match-up issues, but who's going to be able to bang on the inside?

Overall, I thought the defense looked weak, especially given the competition.  UNK's low percentage is more reflective of their poor shooting than us making baskets difficult.

All-in-all, Miles is pretty honest about how this team is going to look.  It's going to be up-and-down, this team is going to give their all, and they'll get better the more time they have to gel.

I wouldn't be surprised to see us bring in 3 big guys for 2014. Hammond being the first. We need guys inside.

I'm not worried a bit about Fuller's stroke.  He will be fine.  First time under the lights....it has happened to numerous good shooters. He still managed to lead the team on the glass, which probably shocked some folks on this board since they seem to focus on his lack of athleticsm.  The kid is a good player and knows how to play.  But in Miles' offense, it takes some time for roles to be identified and get comfortable with a number of reads that can take place.  Miles' isn't going to put the five best individual players on the floor together....he's going to put the five guys on the floor who play best together.

Starters:

Webster, Petteway, Shields, Smith, Pitchford.

This is going to be a tough lineup with a year of experience.  Looks like a real team , not pieced together as in the past.

For anyone at the game, can you comment on this statement found on another board:

"200 section, ugh, didn't even feel like a basketball game. Very hard to explain but it was very tough to watch the game and keep interest. I'm hoping the opponent was the reason, will find out Friday night with FGC coming to town."

Agree/disagree/know where he is coming from at all?

didn't watch or listen to the game. sounds like everyone did good but fuller. Where exactly did he struggle? If it was just shooting, then i'm not really worried. everyone has off nights.

Do you want a honest assessment or not next time?

While Nick Fuller does a ton of great off the ball stuff and rebounds well (That's how he put up 10-6), he's a shooter.  In both the exhibition and scrimmage his shot has looked completely off.  Not sure if it's nerves or him adjusting to adding strength in the offseason.  He'll start shooting and making again...just hope it's sooner rather than later.

it was an exhibition game that got out of hand in a hurry.  That's what it felt like to me from my 200 level perch.

Being there and watching was more telling then a box score.  The comments on here are pretty consistent from those at the game;  so there must be something to it.  He has excellent length and may develop nicely. Should board it well.   He will shoot it better, and soon.   While he wasn't touted for athleticism, he appeared a little more challenged in that area than one would have thought.    Only one night, but appears to have a ways to go to be ready for prime time.  Hard to judge how ready someone is off of recuriitng film and hype; I prefer to watch them play before saying a whole lot. Shavon surprised us on the upside a year ago.  I think all folks are saying is Fuller didn't have that look (Shavon as a freshman) last night.   But of course it's early.

The entire arena was dead.

I think LeeBO nailed why

Hope it was only because of the sight-seeing, but I think that's just how Nebraskans watch basketball--unless it's a big moment in a big game.  Hopefully there will be enough folks who sample the wares at the establishments in the Railyard before the game to get a little more boisterous.

As my son said last night as we were leaving, "quietest 91 points I have ever heard". Crowd was there to be there nothing more, than less. :)

And I think Fuller could redshirt, JUST to allow him to grow some. That way if his shot has disappeared a bit he doesn't have to feel that added pressure. I think some, myself included, thought he is that 3point guy who doesn't miss. Heck a year ago he was playing in a high school gym, now he is shooting in a huge barn. He will be fine. It will just take some time.

- Shavon...I really like that kid.

Yep.

Did you make it?

Nope.  Since I'm coming from KC I'll have to be a little strategic about the games I go to and those that I skip.

You can rest assured I'll be there for FGCU though!  Looking forward to it, it'll be my first opportunity to see the place in person.

Has there been any discussion of trying to get a HHC gathering set up for this game?

Some thoughts:

-Webster - flashes of brilliance, I like his ability to get into the lane, especially with the tight officiating, which should get him to the FT line a lot - didn't see enough outside shooting to get a good feel on him there - I liked how Miles pulled him aside during the time out after the ill-fated behind the back pass, but didn't pull him from the game. You want him to play aggressively and take some chances now and then, just probably not go behind the back on the break to a trailing Menke.  :P

-Parker - improved, still has that great ability to go coast to coast in a flash, just not sure he'll play over Biggs - will be an interesting battle

-Peltz - Looks like his old Basketbro self - not sure how much he plays, but he'll probably be the only walk-on to play when the game is still competitive

-Fuller - like others said, just looked nervous/tentative - he has a very natural looking shot - does a lot of nice things off the ball - I'm confident he will improve a lot with more experience, whether he redshirts or plays this season - there is a spot for a good spot-up shooter in Miles' offense & Fuller has the physical tools to fill that role - I wouldn't give up on him contributing this season just yet

-Petteway - Hasn't looked sharp shooting the ball in the scrimmage or vs UNK, but he's very good at getting in the paint - NU didn't get low on the shot clock often last night, but the one time they did in the first half, he wanted the ball to go one on one and then banked in the 3, so maybe he fills Talley's role there ;) - very athletic, hopefully the outside shot comes - one worry, he plays a very emotional game and picked up a frustration foul after missing a shot - with the games being more tightly called, perimeter players are going to pick up a cheap foul or two during the game, so he can't have frustration fouls like that on top of it or he'll be sitting a lot

-Shields - Very impressed with his improved overall game and strength - he had back to back layups last night that were very impressive - went down the lane and had the ball poked loose, but had enough strength to fight through the contact & muscle the ball in for the layup - then made the nice reverse off the great pass from Tai, showed good athleticism - only shot one 3, but it still looked smooth - good to see him re-enter the game after the tweaked ankle

-Rivers - Very solid night - I don't know that he's ever going to wow anyone, but he's a key cog off the bench for this team and just does a lot of things well - NU needs him to battle inside despite being undersized, like he did last year - still hard to believe he's the same player who was so over-matched as a true freshman

-Smith - Very powerful player - struggled guarding smaller UNK players off the dribble on the perimeter, but still made a couple of nice steals out there - will be interesting to see how he battles against Big Ten size down low - may have trouble scoring down there vs bigger players until he learns to use his body better to shield defenders - NU needs his muscle on the glass for sure

-Pitchford - He's going to win a lot of opening tips this year  :D - shot the 3 very well, although maybe a bit early in the shot clock a couple of times - worrisome that he didn't take shots inside, but he will force the opposing big man to guard him out on the floor, which should open up driving lanes - may struggle with interior post defense vs Big Ten size - as with Smith, tough to get a good read defensively because it was tough to guard smaller UNK players off the dribble

-I liked the way we shot free throws, especially after hearing NU struggled in that area vs S Dakota St

-NU came out of the locker room a bit sluggish after halftime, but picked it up quickly after the first media timeout & re-established dominance.

-Looking forward to Friday, which should give us a better read on the team, but NU is also going to make steady improvement throughout the year, so it will be up and down all year - I fully understand Miles' "EKG" comment at Big Ten media days now.  ;)  Should be a fun ride!

I remembering hearing Pitchford could shoot the three, but this Timmy quote from the LJS this morning is interesting...

“I don’t mind Walt shooting threes,” Miles said. “He’s a green-light guy for me. He makes more than anybody else, including Gallegos.”

I'm eating with my family before the game but will be at a bar beforehand with shirts for people that ordered them that will also be there earlier.  I'm thinking N-Zone unless anyone has any better suggestions.

It seemed fine from my 200 section angle. It all in your perspective I guess. I spent the last few years watching from the rafters. While I might be sitting just as high up as I was at the Bob, I feel like I'm right on top of the action. I was a little disappointed in the turnout, I guess its more than usual for an exhibition game. It will be completely different when the games matter
