A friend that goes to almost all of the games used to say that the student section should yell "Got it." after 3-pointers a la Pavelka's emphatic call.

I LOVE this idea.....would be cool to start some cool tradition like this.  Keeps the fans paying attention to the game.  As people said, the same tradtions that the volleyball and football already have.  Can you imagine 15,000 people yelling "GOTTT ITT!!" after every 3 point shot?  That would be pretty sweet and you would think really energize the team as well as fans.  Its like when Husker Football doe the "HUSKER..........POWER" before the games how loud it gets.  15,000+ in the arena yelling the same thing would be sweet. 

 

I would love to have some cool thing at the end of games when we win that all the fans do too.  Ala KU with their "Rock Chalk" (even though I hate that, mainly because we always had to hear it at the Devaney).  Some cool traditions to open the new arena would be sweet. 

 

This is old school, but one of my absolute favorite things the Devaney used to do say when NU went on a big run was the song where at the end they say "We're going to beat the hell out of you!  YOU! YOU! YOU! YOU!"  The song has a good beat to it as well where the crowd claps along.....Hard to type the beat of the song but I'm sure most know what I'm talking about.  "Na, na, na, na, na.....na, na...HEY!"

In big games the other player doesn't care or even hear it, most likely.

But in games that are either over or we are getting killed the other player makes the crowd look stupid with the fake sit.

Something will come up soon. Have an idea but is kind of stupid.

Have the band, if they can you know if the B1G says it is okay, play something like " Happy Trails" I know kind of lame but we need something different.

I also like when a school does something strange or different that others don't understand or like. "Rock Chalk Jayhawk" is a good example. Hate it but Kansas people go nuts for it.

The 'got it' thing sounds cool, but I just don't think something like that would ever work.  You aren't going to get a whole crowd to sync and do something like that in an excited, spontaneous split second of a made 3-pointer.  It would sound like garbage, IMO.

I'm serious about the "U-G-L-Y, you ain't got no alibi, you ugly!" chant and dance during opponents' free throws.  (Or something similar.)  I think it would be effective because ...

 

1.  It lasts more than 10 seconds, which is the amount of time a free throw shooter has to shoot the ball once he receives it. 

 

2.  It involves both noise AND movement, either of which can take away focus and concentration from the shooter, but when combined would increase the potency.

 

3.  Because the words would become familiar to everyone, everyone could join in the chant, increasing the volume of the noise and, consequently, it's effectiveness.

 

Jadler, can the students put together anything like this?  Is it within the capability of the student section to have something this organized?  Because it would need to be both noise and movement.  What do you think?

Back when I was in high school.  If somebody fouled we had one guy yell "Who did it?"  and the rest of us would point and yell "He did it" Then the guy would yell again "Who did it?" we would yell back "He did it" and then we would all yell "DON"T DO IT AGAIN."

The student section just needs to meet and plan out exactly what chants you will perform for each situation. Eventually the rest of the crowd will catch on. I just think the students need to come up with the ideas because our Marketing Department has been pretty lame and behind the times for the most part. Whereas most students were probably part of their high schools' student sections so they should have some good ideas for chants. 

 

Plan out a chant/chants for every situation. If you can't come up with anything original, just send some students to a Class A Rivalry Game and take notes. I've been to quite a few college basketball environments, but in my opinion many high school student sections put them to shame in terms of originality, creativity, and enthusiasm.

We did a Beach Party night for the USC game two years ago. I bought a big inflatable orca whale to bring to the game to crowd surf through the student section during free throws. During warm ups the players were getting a kick out of it and Mike Fox asked if we could crowd surf someone on it. We put our tiny roommate on it, lifted him up, and hilarity ensued. Pretty soon your friendly neighborhood campus cops were all over us threatening to throw us out. They ended up confiscating my whale and giving me my one warning before the game even started. I got it back after the cop made me wait 30 minutes after the game. He then informed me if we ever brought it back he'd knife it and escort me out.

 

That would have been awesome.

1. Creighton Fan, I'm pretty sure I didn't show up until halfway through the Creighton game (class that I couldn't miss) so there may have been drums but I probably missed them. 

2. Creighton Fan, the half shirt gentleman was another member of our "Committee." It was our Tom Osborne themed night because it was the last home game before 1 Jan 2013 when he stepped down as AD. Also, we were inebriated.

 

3. Don't worry all, the orca is safe in my basement guarding my keg and deep-freeze. 

4. The "Got It" yell. Kent actually approached us with the idea with 3-4 games left last year. He was hoping on the first made 3-pointer that he could take off his headset and hold it up while we all yell "GOT IT." Only problem was a few coincided with the first score and ended up being our confetti toss. I'll add doing that every 3 to the list of suggestions.

5. Why all the hate for "left right?" It's one of the few things that carry over from high school basketball that almost every student knows. Sure the timing of the "Sit Down" could be detrimental, however, we have been getting better at just not saying it if the free throw is about to happen. List of suggestions, added.

6. U-G-L-Y could do some damage. It will be easier to organize consistent free-throw distractions for half a game now that we only control one hoop. Essentially anytime I wanted to do something organized I'd have to run up the stairs and use my big boy voice to yell the plan to the left and to the right. I'd then have to run back down and to the south corner of East-side and inform the band. Then squeeze back up front, stand on the bleachers and get everyone's attention when we start. 

You can see why shit didn't work so well. We need to set up a way to seat people who know what to do or we can relay hand signals.(For the final year in the Bob we were thinking of using an Oregon style play call sign to announce chants between East and West sides. 

7. The Band. The fucking Band. Time out in crunch time and we're only down 3? HAIL VARSITY!!! The crowd is jumping around screaming because we just took the lead? HAIL VARSITY!!! We hate it. We've asked to meet with the band director and sound guys. It needs to stop. They need to understand when they should just let us be noisy and maybe pump in "Be Faithful" or "Let me Clear my Throat" towards the end of the timeout.

8. Coach, I agree, chants are effective. It's hard to start them when most of the student section doesn't know them. So we try to pass them back, run back and yell what to chant, but it's much easier when people have an idea. We've start printing new ones on our scouting sheets we place on the seats before games, but as you can see people didn't pay much attention.

Jadler, if you do get to meet with the band director, could you ask him to GET SOME NEW F***ING CHARTS?  They've been playing the same (seems like about 5) songs for the past 25 years!!!  I mean, for God's sake some of the saxophone sheets probably still have my fingerprints on them!!!

Jadler, I'm thinking movement that goes along with chanting would be particularly effective during freethrows.  There's a visual distraction during freethrows that is enhanced if it's choreographed and uniform.  Doesn't have to be complicated choreography.  Just lots of people doing the same motion at the same time. 

 

And incorporating a chant into the movement (or movement into the chant) probably will help people remember.  It's just like the old thing about how it's easier to remember the words to a poem when it's set to music than when it's just spoken.

 

Back to that U-G-L-Y chant, the movement in that video really isn't too complicated and could be modified so that it would be done mostly with arm movement and turning your body just in the space in front of your seat.  And, for starters, if just a handful (20 or so?) of people knew the dance, most everyone else in the student section would be able to figure it out by the end of the non-conference part of the schedule.

 

Jadler, can I suggest that, in addition to meeting with the marketing guys and band director, etc., that you also meet with the choreographer for the dance squad to maybe give you guys some ideas on simple, repeatable "dance" moves that a couple dozen die-hards could learn fairly easily?

 

I really think, especially with free throws, movement combined with noise is important.

And until the students get it together, because you will have a ton of newbies this year.  You could just have print outs to help them.  Heck they could go buy the arm guard that football and catchers use to have on them.
