HuskerCager Posted May 13, 2014 Report Posted May 13, 2014 This is the kind of thing that needs to happen here. A top 150 recruit from this class that walks into Lincoln, is blown away, and commits on the spot. If it's happening in Iowa City, why can't it happen in Lincoln? It's got to happen sometime. I think. Rivals doesn't have him ranked at all and 247 has him at 197 but I get what you're saying. Didn't bother to check - I assumed. Thanks Kamdy. When you look at the names of the schools that were in on him, you think he's a top 150 recruit. Quote
lanigan123 Posted May 13, 2014 Report Posted May 13, 2014 A kid we probably could have had, had we recruited him a bit harder. It's like we offer kids and then disappear. Quote
HB Posted May 13, 2014 Report Posted May 13, 2014 A kid we probably could have had, had we recruited him a bit harder. It's like we offer kids and then disappear. Do have any actual information to back this claim? Are is it just a total supposition on your part? We "Probably" could have had him? Based on what? Do you have any info on how hard we did or didn't' recruit him? Daledangdarn, jaimes2000 and Norm Peterson 3 Quote

lanigan123 Posted May 13, 2014 Report Posted May 13, 2014 I would recommend joining rivals, even prospects like baptiste we sort if lost for a period of time. Quote

I can imagine that we have a prioritized list of players we target and the time allocation is based on their priority. Could a kid like Fleming have been a lower priority recruit? I assume Baptiste is high priority but we lost touch through the Smith transition as Craig Smith was his lead recruiter and once Molinari was hired Coach Miles assigned Hunter to him. That whole process took 6-8 weeks. Quote
hhcmatt Posted May 13, 2014 Report Posted May 13, 2014 A kid we probably could have had, had we recruited him a bit harder. It's like we offer kids and then disappear. We weren't even in his top 5. Fleming had 11 offers before narrowing his choices to Iowa, Florida, Ohio State, UNLV, Vanderbilt and Memphis. We could have thrown everything at him and still have lost out to Iowa or whoever. We have a lot of irons in the fire...does it make sense to over pursue a guy like this? Quote
lanigan123 Posted May 13, 2014 Report Posted May 13, 2014 I think it's uber important for this staff, right now to find kids early and recruit the hell out of them, while maintaining other ties. Once we are more established we can be more open. Fleming is one of the few 2 guards we were still in on, I hope we keep recruiting him. Quote
lanigan123 Posted May 13, 2014 Report Posted May 13, 2014 Did you see Robin's tweet. Wasn't this a kid we offered within a week of being able to? I didn't just make it up, take it for what it's worth. Quote
OurDecay Posted May 13, 2014 Report Posted May 13, 2014 I don't know that a recruit who had Florida, Vandy, Memphis, UNLV, Ohio St and Iowa as his other favorites recently is a guy we could land if we just tried a little harder. Now, if you're talking about a year ago....Per the Huskers Rivals article back in June 2013, when we offered him he already had offers from Florida, Auburn and Vandy, and a host of other majors showing interest. We held off offering earlier than that because he had (by his own admission) a bad showing at a camp we attended. Nothing about the way he talked in that article suggests that he was a Nebraska lean, and certainly not ours to lose. He talked about building a great relationship with Craig Smith, nothing more than that. If you look at his other Rivals updates: Jan 25, 2014: Lists Florida, Vanderbilt and Memphis as favorites. Mentions NC State, Texas, Notre Dame and Iowa St as showing interest. Feb 13, 2014: Top three of Florida, Vandy and Memphis. Mentions interest from Iowa and Texas. Mentions offers from Nebraska and Auburn. Since then, he talks about CSU offering and then lists about 10-15 new schools that "have interest". I have some concerns about our recruiting here at NU, and am an impatient person. That's already been discussed here. But I don't see this as a failing in any way at all. I see this as a kid who loves attention, and is playing some games. If he really had an actual offer from Florida like he repeatedly claimed, and they were his leader...why didn't he commit? His brother goes to school there too. He has a consistent top three for over a year, and yet Iowa can essentially swoop in and "grab" him. Its a little fishy. TheKamdyMan 1 Quote
OurDecay Posted May 13, 2014 Report Posted May 13, 2014 I also do think there's some question as to this kid's ability. Early on, probably based on his offers and interest, he was a Rivals150 recruit. Now, he's unranked. I'm not entirely sure he's as good as his self-reported offers suggest. Plus, there are some red flags out there if you are to believe twitter. I'm okay with him going to Iowa. Quote

Doesn't Robin having a tweet on May 3rd mentioning 6 schools that aren't Iowa mean that he's not omnipotent? Is it possible that we could have landed this kid if we put more effort on top of whatever effort we were currently putting in? Maybe. To call it probable though simply comes across as groundless arrogance....there are a lot of guys we've recruited heavily who have went elsewhere. Quote
lanigan123 Posted May 13, 2014 Report Posted May 13, 2014 It's really being fickle. The same source I have said we are tied for Jordan. It's a big deal because look at the positions we are in on for 2015 for the 2 guard spot, he got an offer as a sophomore, a kid that we were in the thick of things with him. So out of nowhere Iowa swoops on for the win? Almost every post places some blame on the kid and no one says, we had an omission. He was mediocre enough to get an offer as a sophomore. If I have to defend everything I get from a friend I will simply stop sharing. Quote
Cookie Belcher Posted May 13, 2014 Report Posted May 13, 2014 It's very frustrating that this staff would be landing top 150 kids left and right if they would just try a little harder. Come on, coaches! 49r, OurDecay, bobcat402 and 1 other 4 Quote
ajb5856 Posted May 13, 2014 Report Posted May 13, 2014 We hear snippets from recruiting analysts here and there, we hear reports, and we hear secondhand from friends who have sources or who are sources. I'm not discounting the information, it's all we get. But it's also absurd to think that we get even 1% of the story about the recruitment of a player and it's even more absurd to think that any news we hear is news to the coaches and to make statements such as 'we didn't recruit him hard enough' or 'we backed off' etc. We get these snippets late. Coaches know what is going on, probably knew the direction things were going months ago, and aren't into wasting time. I won't go after anyone who has the opinion that recruiting isn't going well at Nebraska, it's just not my opinion. Our recruiting has improved by leaps and bounds and we will see if it continues to improve. TheKamdyMan, AuroranHusker and hhcmatt 3 Quote

From the recent Rivals articles and indications of those players we're focusing on for 2015 my impression is we want to sign a PG, not a SG. Quote

Norm Peterson Posted May 13, 2014 Report Posted May 13, 2014 Cool, but I don't believe it. Mmmm rd kool aid is the best. Well, OBVIOUSLY, you can't find anything to prove me wrong. Therefore, what I said MUST be true. One can only wonder how much better recruiting would be going if we had hired Kobe instead of Molinari for that last opening we had. Quote
