This is an entirely theoretical and pointless discussion of which none of us has adequate knowledge to even remotely hazard a guess, but, since there's precious else Husker hoops related going on right now, let's have some fun.

If the games were between ...

Recruits:

Webster  6'2"

Hawkins  6'5"

Fuller  6'7"

Tumalla  6'7"

Smith  6'8"

versus

Returners:

Your pick of Biggs  6'0" or Parker 5'8"

Gallegos  6'2"

Shields  6'6"

Your pick of Petteway 6'6" or Rivers 6'7"

Your pick of Pitchford  6'10" or Vucetic 7'0"

Who wins best of 7 series?

Oh, and the games are played next November after a summer of practice, conditioning, normal individual and small group workouts and all of fall practice.

OK, I'll get it started.  Returners have the better athletes probably but the recruits I think have the better shooters.  I suspect the backcourt of Biggs and Gallegos would be hit-and-miss inconsistent in the shooting department.  I think all 1-4 spots for the recruits are players who can potentially fill it up and would really stretch the floor.

Be interesting who's more physical between Pitchford and Smith.  Smith wins on size.  On his recruiting thread, there was a suggestion he's not very physical but the same has been said about Pitchford.  So that might be a bit of a push.

I think they'd be some pretty entertaining games.  Returners have experience advantage, obviously.  But I think the recruits would win a couple games.  Might even push the series to 7 games before the returning players take the series.

The second team would be a much more cohesive unit, with the core of Biggs, Petteway and Pitchford having played on the scout team for a year together, and those three having played plenty of pick-up games with Shields and Rivers.

I see the series over at 4-1 or 4-2 in favor of the returning players. Sometimes it depends on whether or not guys hit their shots.

sweep for returners.

Yeah, you're probably right.  But, if we give each team some depth by adding the Tulane transfer to the recruits group and then make the returners pick one guy for depth ...

Then I think the recruits have an advantage at PG (so we think), an advantage in shooters, and an advantage down low.  And the vets have less of an advantage in athleticism.

THEN watcha got?  Huh?  :o   ;)

Returners would have their way with the recruits initially, but it would tighten by the end of the summer, I suspect.  It will be nice to have all of these players eligible to compete for the Big Red, instead of Biggs/Pitchford/Petteway sitting out redshirt seasons. 2013-14 will be a fun ride for Miles & Co.

If we can grab a graduate transfer (ahem) then all the worries about bigs fly out the window and we can start thinking about not just being as good as last year but being a lot better.  I mean, that's been the one big worry.  That and finding a replacement for Dylan Talley.  Different people might do different things to fill in for what Talley brought to the table, but you can't coach tall and we didn't have a lot of it lined up for the roster as of a week ago.  Adding Smith and then snagging a graduate transfer might put us in a position to challenge for that middle third of the conference.  :o

Are you talking about a guy who has 1 year left?  Are we looking at any graduate transfers or is this just much ado about nothing.

Bump.

And, we didn't get Tumalla (dang it.)

But it looks like we will get Tai.  (Woohoo.)

So now I have to change my question up a bit.

Let's challenge last year's team (because the returners would be short-handed otherwise) against the newcomers (which includes transfers now eligible.)

Who ya got?

Biggs

Webster

Petteway

Hawkins

Fuller

Smith

Pitchford

-- against --

Parker

Gallegos

Talley

Shields

Rivers

Ubel

Almeida

Vucetic

Keep in mind, the newcomers only have 7 players, so they'd be at somewhat of a disadvantage.  ;)

I think Ubel and Talley's experience shows up and they win game 5 (and the series) by 9.

If that's the case, uneblinstu, then we almost can't help but be a better team this year.

Y'all keep in mind we return three starters (though we lost two of our best players from last year's squad.)

Three of the newcomers are transfers who sat out but practiced with the team and so should be somewhat acclimated to Miles' motion system.

A couple of the freshmen are, by all reports, pretty darn good.

It's true that the bottom end of the B1G is going to be better but we're going to give some teams some challenges this year.

You forgot Wagner in the newcomers list.
