Seems he probably was pulling the same stuff from 1998-2003 in the NBA.

I cannot swear to this coz, but I believe it is a different Ed Rush.

From the article:

Pac-12 coordinator of basketball officials and former NBA referee Ed Rush has been investigated by the Pac-12 for comments made about Arizona coach Sean Miller in meetings that included several Pac-12 referees.

Rush was a longtime NBA official who was also the NBA's director of officiating from 1998-2003. He replaced Bill McCabe as the Pac-12's supervisor of officials in 2012, after McCabe retired.

They are letting Louisville bang and bump tonight, plays into their hands well.

College basketball has become a disgrace.  Louisville is a total fraud.  All they do is mug the opponent every single second they are on the floor.  The officiating of the college game is atrocious and embarrassing.  Its not basketball, it is simply a rugby match on the court.  Michigan is simply 100X better because they are winning despite an embarrassment of fouls that are not being called on UL.

Just chiming in here. I thought the officiating tonight was awful though I don't think it necessarily favored one team over another. I don't expect refs to get everything right but there were SO MANY things they got wrong. Kicked balls and goal tends NOT called. Burke's block that WAS called. A push that was called out of bounds instead. Hanson's penchant for initiating contact in a way to draw fouls. And reaching in fouls not called. Even became the subject of quite a bit of talk by the announcers. If these were the best refs the NCAA could find then the others must be awful indeed!

One of the things that I get a kick out of, and I heard it out of Bruce Pearl this morning on the Mike & Mike show; is that rule changes are now in the offing.  He said changes were necessary in order to "free up" the offensive player.  Uhhhhh, I have a suggestion.  How about simply calling the fouls when they take place?  I don't believe rule changes are necessary, you simply have to call the game consistantly.

Players and coaches adjust.  They have adjusted to how the games are now called, and they will adjust if the officials change back.

If I were to change a rule, I would change the five fouls and you are out rule.  Instead, I would provide three free throws any time a player goes over a certain number of fouls.  That way the offending team is penalized, but not to the extent that the player is no longer eligible.

CWG you are spot on.  I told the co-workers going to more of an NBA game isn't needed, just call the game as the rulebook states.  He asked me if I wanted to see all the starters foul out, smiled and told him they would foul less if they knew it would be called.  It is kind of like the excuse used for not calling holding in football on the OL because it could be called every play.

Who's gotten lazy?  The players or the refs?  If the refs start calling it, the players and coaches will adjust.  They'll have to.  It will be interesting to see what adjustments and emphasis they'll have next year.

KZ I just talked to my co-worker who officates and he said the three guys last night are the best in the business.  Kind of scary isn't it.

Did he say whether he thought they did a good job last night?

It is because we have become lazy.

It is hard to play good solid no grab and bump "D".

I only get to the "show" with how well I dunk or my handles and 3 point shot.

Not on how well I defend.

Don't think it is laziness. The players are just taking the path of least resistance so they grab instead of using good footwork. They go over the back on rebounds instead of working for position. They just pitch a tent in the lane instead of developing good offensive moves to get to the basket.

I don't know WHAT the refs are doing but I doubt they are lazy.

Systemically, the game has become a loosely organized game of street ball and I, for one, don't like it as well.

It has nothing to do with being lazy.  I actually think the UL players played unbelievably hard!

The reason they foul all the time is b/c the refs allow them to do it and it is very effective.  There simply is no disputing that you can stop the offensive player better by grabbing him than by simply moving next to him.  I can't believe that would ever be in dispute.  It is incredibly difficult for an offensive player to even dribble the ball down the court when the opposing defender is litterally riding on your back the entire way, bumping you, hacking you, grabbing you, pushing you off course, etc.  If the defender was simply "moving his feet" along side the ball-handler without touching him, that would not be nearly as effective.  Same goes for post players, etc.  Heck, it is hard to even inbounds the ball when the opponent is allowed to litterally bear hug you when you are trying to get open.

They foul because it works better.  That is not the question.  The problem is that it is not supposed to be allowed under the rules of the game, and it mucks up the game and makes it ugly and, at times, unwatchable.

To some extent, has the pendulum swung a bit to the other end of the officiating spectrum?  Wasn't all that long ago I can remember crowds yelling to the refs to "let 'em play."  Now, it's like, "Hey!  Would ya call something?"  There were several games this year where I remember feeling like they better start calling some stuff or this rough play is going to get out of hand.

That was Higgins from Omaha doing the Final last night.  I don't think you can blame just one official or just one crew.  Instead of placing an emphasis on calling palming or something, the NCAA needs to place an emphasis on calling fouls.  And being consistent.

I looked at some stuff on the NCAA website from the director of officials to all the officials in the NCAA telling them that they still aren't getting the charge/block calls right and some other stuff.

Back when I coached girls JV we had a game against our rival from 10 miles up the frozen tundra. After the third girl (from both teams) was thrown to the floor without a foul I called a timeout and the other coach and I both told the officials in no uncertain terms that they would call fouls or we would pull our teams from the floor. We were both on our players to settle down but the hostility between the towns required some officiating to keep them from taking out their grudges.

Players and coaches are responsible but officials are there for a reason

So, was this like 5th grade girls or 8th grade girls?  Was the other coach, um, how do I say this?  Was he ... fixated on only having an 8-player rotation?
